5 myths of anti-immigration talk (know thine enemy alert)
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | January 20, 2008 | Andres Oppenheimer

Posted on 01/20/2008 10:57:57 PM PST by americanophile

Let's debunk the biggest myths of the anti-immigration movement that has swept this country and may still have an impact on the 2008 presidential race: that it is not anti-Hispanic, that it doesn't oppose legal immigration and that it's against only "illegal" immigration. Most U.S. Republican presidential hopefuls -- with the exception of Sen. John McCain -- and cable television anti-immigration crusaders on CNN and Fox News are deceiving the public with their claim that they are only against "illegal" immigration.

• Myth No. 1: "We are only against illegal immigration. Undocumented immigrants should get in line for visas." That's deceptive because you can't demand that people get into line when, for the most part, there is no line to get into.

While the U.S. labor market is demanding 1.5 million mostly low-skilled immigrants a year -- and will demand many more in coming years, as the U.S. population becomes increasingly educated -- the current immigration system allows into the U.S. an average of 1 million legal immigrants a year and most of them are already here.

Wow, this article is a prime example of demagaguery. Amazing.

From the article:

And, by the way, nearly half of all undocumented immigrants enter the country legally, and overstay their visas

Hey, Oppenheimer. If they entered the country legally THEN THEY ARE DOCUMENTED!!!!!!!!!!!!

So don't call visa overstays "undocumented immigrants" THEY TRULY ARE ILLEGAL ALIENS!!

And what is this author’s SOLUTION? NONE.

answer to myth # 1: Yes, there is a LINE to line up to, Andres. All they have to do is fill in the application. I find it absurd that they WONT line up, are not aware there is a line, and find it idiotic that just because they jumped over the border...they ASSUME there is no line.

answer to myth # 2:>>>”Anti-immigration advocates are not anti-Hispanic.” Maybe many aren’t but when was the last time you heard anti-immigration Republican hopefuls or cable television talk show hosts lashing out against illegal immigrants from Canada?<<<

That’s because a VAST majority of those perps are of Hispanic descent? PLUS every right wing radio show IF you ever listened to one, advocates throwing out EVERY ILLEGAL, regardless of country. Obviously, Radio Amerika and NPR are the only stations this lefty ever listens to.

answer to myth 3:>>>Myth No. 3: “We are a nation of laws, and the law says you have to enter the country legally.” Yes, but we are also a nation of immigrants. And, by the way, nearly half of all undocumented immigrants enter the country legally, and overstay their visas.<<<

Nice switch of logic: the question was about the laws of the the land...then SWITCHES the subject to a nation of immigrants. I wont even waste my time with # 3.

answer to myth 4: >>>Myth No. 4: “Building a border fence will solve the problem.” Wrong.<<<

Correct. It wont solve the problem. It will remedy and BAND AID the problem, but aside from a fence...MORE AGGRESIVE MEASURES such as electrical wire, explosives and hungry dogs at the border fence come to mind, including state by state anti illegal laws would do the trick. Of course, Im not PC.

answer to myth 5:>>>Myth No. 5: Those of us who criticize anti-immigration groups are “amnesty” and “open borders” supporters. Baloney. Many support both border protection and an earned path to legalization for millions of undocumented workers who pay taxes and are willing to learn English.<<<

Baloney back to you. You claim you are for “border protection”: when the first 4 myths CONTRADICT the concept of securing the borders. Gimme a break and finish the Kool Aid.

They're also not raising roosters and hens in the garage and playing awful circus music at volume 10 at all hours.

If there's one thing I hate, it's accordions and tubas. Both together at the same time is unbearable.

The author also needs to point out the Canadian version of the violent street gang 'Mara Salvatrucha 13' for me to make their case.

Myth one: no line? Tell that to my European friends that are waiting visas.

Myth two: but when was the last time you heard anti-immigration Republican hopefuls or cable television talk show hosts lashing out against illegal immigrants from Canada?
Well heres the rub on that...they do not require me to press one for english...If the Hispanics were not demanding that US Citizens learn Spanish and put Spanish everywhere my guess is they wouldnt be targeted. Also I do not see Canadians , Italians, Irish, Germans etc, protesting in our streets for rights they don’t have.

Myth 3: Myth No. 3: ‘’We are a nation of laws, and the law says you have to enter the country legally.’’ Yes, but we are also a nation of immigrants. And, by the way, nearly half of all undocumented immigrants enter the country legally, and overstay their visas.
What does that mean? That because they are here the law should not be enforced? If they overstay their visas....get a clue...they are breaking the LAW.

Myth No. 4: ‘’Building a border fence will solve the problem.’
Show me where it won’t. In the parts of the country where the fence is build, illegal activity was reduced. Build the fence and if that doesn’t stop them...Put armed guards.

Myth No. 5: Those of us who criticize anti-immigration groups are ‘’amnesty’’ and ‘’open borders’’ supporters.

A rose by any other name....
and your baloney addition is just that baloney.

One more thing...if you are so pro-immigration for ANYONE and not just Hispanics, why then was this your conclusion?...
“to increase economic integration with Mexico and the rest of Latin America in order to reduce poverty and emigration pressures south of the border. The rest is, for the most part, populist demagoguery.”

Who is the racist bigot now?

I can’t publicly protest in Mexico even if I legally enter the country. My country would not stand up for my “inalienable right” of protest. I would be expected to respect the laws of that nation.

Put armed guards — exactly what I was thinking when that poor Border Agent was purposefully run over a day or so ago. In Iraq our guys will blast anyone who tries to run a checkpoint.

How come it isn’t happening on our border?

Why to our guys have to die?

Are the lives of foreign nationals better that ours?

We should have troops on the border. Period.

What a trashy article. For many Americans opposed to illegal immigration, the issue is not anti-[Latino], or racist. Personally would reduce the amount of immigrants, though. Because of assimilation reasons. Or the immigration levels could be increased if somehow the majority of prospective immigrants were under the age of 4 and have Americans looking to adopt them.

Then again, there is a minority which gives all anti-illegal-alien people a bad name. You might consider those who would readily accept the entire Polish population coming over to the United States but who balk at the idea of the roughly 10 million Mexicans already here as falling into this category. (to take something from another thread).

It is called build the wall with the illegals you catch crossing the border. Once the wall is built send them home. To Mexico or whatever country they come from. Then they can go to our embassy and apply for a visa to work in our country. Pass a law that any employer that knowingly hires an illegal will be prosecuted and fined. Also any landlord that knowingly rents to an illegal will be fined and prosecuted. Tell all states that knowingly have an sanctuary city will loose federal monies. Thats will solve the illegal problem.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

What steams me are our government schools.

Parents must prove to the government school that they are residents but some idiot judge determined that government schools can not insist that the kid is a LEGAL resident. Is this nutty or what? !

In my state it costs more than $10,000 a year to educate a child in the government schools. ( Adding in teachers’ pensions and retirement health care)

“Are the lives of foreign nationals better that ours?”

I don’t know if their lives are better, but our leadership and our elites most certainly think the lives of foreign nationals are worth more than the lives of American citizens.

First, Oppenheimer is a pro-illegal anti-American bigot. Everything he writes is slanted for the illegal

FACT #1: People who support illegal alienism are the real bigots. Notice not a single illegal supporter doesnt mind that the sole reason they are here is because they can get paid less than an American. Change “illegal” to “black”....boy just imagine the outcry when it comes to using a special-interest group for cheap labor

FACT #2: A border fence will help greatly. Opponents of the border fence wont tell you how well it would work. That is the real reason why they are against it...it would keep illegals out

FACT #3: Mexico and much of Latin America is a third world porta-pottie tank compared to Canada. Canadians want open borders to do cheap shopping...not to shoplift. Some may deem this comment racist...but its the reality.

FACT #4: A sizeable racist element in the Hispanic community wants illegal alienism....groups like La Raza (THE RACE) link illegal alienism to their Aztlan and Reconquista agenda of overthrowing parts of the USA. However many Hispanic Americans are against illegal alienism

FACT #5: Those who enter the USA legally are not going to commit crimes and crap on this country. When you pay thousands of bucks and wait forever to enter the USA legally....you already have shown much respect for this country and its laws....something illegals are not going to do

An immigrant is someone who comes to America to become an American. Illegal aliens, not illegal immigrants, come here for various reasons, to find work, to participate in lucrative crime organizations, to escape the wife and kids and who knows what. But they don't come here to become Americans, which is why we're ending up with our own Quebec problem of separatism in the Southwest.

Our so-called elites don't care about this, because they think they are above being an American, they're global citizens. They believe the problems caused by illegal aliens are over-blown, will work themselves out, will be fixed by government agencies or if Americans were just more welcoming, they'd like us.

Our elites are among the dumbest elites in world history, right up there with the Russian aristocracy circa 1910 or the French in 1939. My fear in the GOP Presidential campaign, is that I see all of the top 4 behaving that, well, okay, I'll say what they want me to say, but once in office, I'll do the "right" thing on immigration.

I can only speak for myself, but I’d like to see it made easier to immigrate here legally than illegally. It was a big mistake to restrict legal immigration. We cannot tolerate illegal immigration because it undermines our rule of law, but I believe that we should welcome legal immigrants with open arms if, and only if, they want to come here and become Americans.

This author is not clueless - he knows the lies he is spewing. He is just a good propagandist - the truth doesn't matter.

He could have written something like this in the article:

"Myth #8 - these two gentlemen are not crossing the US border illegally! They are only looking for a place to fill a water jug for their car's radiator."

The biggest myth of the immigration debate is the notion that the advocates of amnesty know what they’re talking about.

The amnesty campaign is an alliance of politicians who want Latino votes, and employers who want cheap labor. I’m not paying to subsidize people who came here illegally.

Land of the free and home of the brave is quickly being given and taken away by people we elect to represent US. I actually do not blame anybody wanting to leave a .ell hole to come to this awesome nation. What I do find reprehensible is the official government embossed invitations sent out to and fro encouraging illegal actions.

Those in their gated communities, ‘you know’ the fenced in crowed using slave labor, profiteering off humanity won’t stay safe once the rest of US have been over taken.

The editorial writer writes for the Miami Herald and is about as left-leaning as is possible. No surprised to see other papers pick up his garbage.
