Thompson was wrong. He's said he was wrong, and he's said why. We'll see how wrong he really thought he was if he backs McCain now. If he does, then every Thompson supporter on this forum, myself included, fell for an act. But I honestly don't believe he will.

To say the constitutional travesty that is McCain-Feingold (the bill's other namesake being on the furthest left-flank in the country) is nitpicking the edge of anything shows how little of it of you've actually seen. Couple that with McCain's "Gang of 14", and what it's meant to the President's prerogative to appoint federal judges (those who will be enforcing McCain-Feingold) and add it up.

It's not nitpicking to compare McCain's votes to the real, practical actions he's taken over the last eight years. How is his co-sponsoring of McCain-Lieberman, or appearing in leftist anti-gun television and radio ads in Colorda the edges of the gun issue? This stuff is at the core of what he believes. Global warming isn't the "edge" of any issue. It's a junk-science scheme to transfer rights and property to a central authority, and John McCain is its foremost ambassador in the GOP. He's strong on the war, but he's made publicly haranguing Donald Rumsfeld his life's work (even 18 months after his retirement), he stands with the far-left on closing Gitmo, and he wags his finger at the administration for allowing the coercive interrogation of KSM and Abu Zubaydah. And he was front-and-center on the doom and gloom parade in 2006, painting pictures of sectarian civil wars other such "straight talk" on the Sunday morning TV circuit.

The contradictions between how McCain votes and what he does with the rest of his time suggest either a split-personality or a deliberate deception. Either way, it's a fatal flaw that will eliminate him from consideration in the minds of many conservatives.

As for Romney, I've already said he's the best of a weak lot. If that makes me an LDS sympathizer or whatever, knock yourself out. I'm not going to get too bent out of shape over some belligerent dude on the internet who seasons his posts with randomized hahahaha's.

I am an immigration reform activist who just spent five days in SC participating in the process. I know the issue far better than you do. If McCain manages to get elected, he’ll have a spot in his administration for Lindsay Graham, guaranteed. I don’t think he’ll be Vice President, but Secretary of Defense is a real possibility. I would vote for Romney in the general. I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who is LDS and of course a big Romney backer. I was fired up when I saw this FL poll as McCain is my guy and Romney has pissed me off a bit this campaign as well as all the major candidates. But talking with my friend we both found a lot of common ground between our guys and agreed on most major issues. The way McCain is treated by some conservatives is unacceptable though, especially on FR.

But when I cool down I know I would vote for him. I fear greatly it would mean a big loss and a long time in the wilderness for the GOP.

The issue for me is immigration. Amnesty will literally destroy this country. Most Americans don't understand the issue. The demographics are unbelievable. Our legal immigration policies must also be changed, but amnesty is forever. It can't be reversed. Here are three pieces you need to read:

1. Currently, 1.6 million legal and illegal immigrants settle in the country each year; 350,000 immigrants leave each year, resulting in net immigration of 1.25 million. If immigration continues at current levels, the nation’s population will increase from 301 million today to 468 million in 2060 — a 167 million (56 percent) increase. Immigrants plus their descendents will account for 105 million (63 percent) of the increase. The total projected growth of 167 million is equal to the combined populations of Great Britain, France, and Spain. The 105 million from immigration by itself is equal to 13 additional New York Cities.

2. Immigrants account for one in eight U.S. residents, the highest level in 80 years. In 1970 it was one in 21; in 1980 it was one in 16; and in 1990 it was one in 13. Overall, nearly one in three immigrants is an illegal alien. Half of Mexican and Central American immigrants and one-third of South American immigrants are illegal. Since 2000, 10.3 million immigrants have arrived — the highest seven-year period of immigration in U.S. history. More than half of post-2000 arrivals (5.6 million) are estimated to be illegal aliens.

3. The persistent inflow of Hispanic immigrants threatens to divide the United States into two peoples, two cultures, and two languages. I have served my country for 36 years [8 years as a naval officer including a year in Vietnam and another 8 months off the coast and 28 years as a Foreign Service Officer including service in Iran during the fall of the Shah and the rise of Khomeini; martial law in Poland durng the days of Solidarnosc, and in Saudi Arabia during the entire Gulf War, i.e., Desert Shield/Storm. I would agree that those states are not likely to flip. Among the Old Confederacy, however, Arkansas, Missouri, Virginia, and Florida were close enough in 2004 that a larger than normal African-American turnout and a smaller than normal turnout by the conservatives and evangelicals could turn these states blue.

Rudy will not drop out before Super Tuesday. He’s pretty thin on money now... he needs a BIG showing Feb 5 to get people to believe in him again, and re-start the money flow.

Ron Paul will not drop out at all.. he has money, and he loves this. He’ll stick around until the end. At least, let’s hope he does... if he drops out, he’d be likely to run on a 3rd party ticket... but, I don’t think he’ll do that.

Since about 60% of the population votes, there is also the very real possibility that a Hillary or Obama candidacy will increase the turnout against them. Hillary energizes the Rep base like no other candidate. Obama's weaknesses are many and will be on view during the general campaign should he get the nomination. Two years in the Senate and a few years in the state legislature would normally make such a candidacy a joke. If he were white, his name wouldn't even be in discussion. It demonstrates how weak a candidate Hillary is when someone like Obama can actually be her main challenger.

It appears even the Dems don't want the Clintons to continue their rule over their party for the next 8 years on top of the 16 years they have already been running things. Imagine if there are two Clinton ex-Presidents!!! Hell, they will control the party until they die.

McCain a great man? No way. Senator John McCain is no hero. No great man would treat his loyal wife the way he treated his first wife and then divorce her for the mistress. No great man would try to push amnesty down our throats and vote against barring gang members and terrorists from this country. There is no excuse for this.
