Does anyone know what has happened to Al Rantel, the evening guy on KABC talk radio in Los Angeles? Tammy Bruce is beginning her 3rd week of subbing for him, and I think I heard her mention last week that people were all wishing he pulls through.
Is he seriously ill? I can't find out anything from any of their websites. I'd like to pray for him or send him a note, but I was wondering if anyone knows what is going on.
Thank you.
Ping to find out what’s happened to Al Rantel.
Didn’t hear on 790am or in the news anything about him not being well.
Do you know what happened to Al Rantel??
At first I assumed he was on vacation. Friday night when I got into my car, Tammy was saying something like “...and I know we all hope that Al pulls through. I just want to say that I am honored that he chose me to stand in for him and I’ll be here for the long haul...”
I’ve been concerned and wanting to know what has happened to him.
Don’t know, of course I pray for a full recovery if needed.
Well KABC is keeping whatever it is close to the vest.
If it is a medical issue, Al may have requested that there be a blackout on the subject. If it isn’t, KABC may be the one pushing the blackout.
At any rate, there is no information forthcoming and it doesn’t look like Al is coming back anytime soon, and that can’t bode will for those wanting him back ASAP.
I’d noticed TB on the radio a lot lately...Hope nothing serious with Al. He’s one of the good guys. TB is an excellent sub though.
Steve wrote: hi ai,found out your not well from the mick mendozer show uk,hope you get well soon I look forward to the next link, good luck steve southend in essex England.
AL I was having surgery the samn day At Cedars sinai, and wanted to say hi best of luck to you, Mike Baird
So he may have had surgery.
I heard Al at 11 AM a few weeks ago for a few minutes...(I had some other business to attend to.) He sounded sick. He said something about getting tests done...Since then, I have not heard him on radio...
I don’t know (clueless here in Michigan...heard of him but know little almost zero about him). BTTT.
Thanks for posting this. I was wondering where Al went to the last few days as it seemed he’d been gone too long to be a vacation and he had time off at Christmas. I’m hoping dudes alright.
Regards
Reflecting from my radio days in Miami, I Googled "Miami", "Al Rantel", and found that he is openly gaybut criticizes gays.
Life expectancy can be expected to be compromisedhope he recovers from whatever.
Rush has developed some voice ailmenthope that proves to be nothing, too.
Well what ever is going on . . . prayers up for AL!!!
Thanks, and to all the others who responded. I’ve listened to him since his first day on the air here in SoCal. He was absolutely tireless and was a very dedicated workhorse. He still has 2 daily shows. I knew he wouldn’t have taken such a long time off for pleasure.
I know also that he took good care of his health — I am sorry that he is having these problems, whatever they are.
I pray for his full recovery.
The last time I heard Al on the air he had said that he just was not feeling well and was having tests. He said he had been to see his doctor but he could not find anything wrong. However, Al felt something was just not right. The tests results were to be in last Friday. He said he would announce what the matter was when he knew.
From what TB had said, perhaps he had surgery over the weekend.

Whatever is up with Al may be permanent or maybe this new guy is a temp replacement.

Oh my gosh. I can't listen to all of his show but I wonder if Tammy said anything last night. Can anyone tune in tonight to the first hour (what is it, 6 pm PST) on KABC and report whether she says anything? I can listen at 7.
I don't believe they would be permanently replacing him so prematurely?!
GET WELL, AL!
Are you SURE that wasn’t KFI? They are promoting a new guy at 7 pm.
Anyway, Al is 790am and a class act IMO, he weekly talks with Ann Coulter on the air.
I hope he feels better.
Then if you want to have a complete guide to night time LA Radio, if you go over to 870am the same time Dennis Miller is on.
All are very good, you have to pick what you like.
I wish Al Rantel a full recovery.
As much as I like Tammy (I like varying opinions), Al has had a solid show for quite some time. I usually catch him on the way home from work. They sure are quiet about Al's absence. A few weeks ago Tammy was hinting that he was in Hawaii or somewhere in the tropics on holidays. However after reading this thread, she was probably either not informed about his whereabouts or maybe he was on holidays and something went wrong.
I sure hope he's OK.
I didn’t know about the Zieglar replacement. Sounds interesting. Tammy is good too, but I am worried about Al. I too have switched over in the car to hear what Dennis Miller is up to. Does he have the best vocab on radio or what?
Al is a great guy and a good Reagan conservative. He is against gay marriage and thinks it's dumb, he doesn't like flamboyant parades or any of that in your face nonsense that is really what most offends average folks.
Regards
Per Larry Elder, whose show is on now, thwer will be an update on Al at the 6:30 break (in 7-8 minutes from now.
Hey thanks C4B. I will be checking it out.
Regards
don’t thank me yet...he hasn’t mentioned it yet...maybe he meant 6:30 pacific, now that his show is local. stay tuned, i have to log off.
Al has Lymphoma.
Prognosis looks good. Prayers up for homeboy.

Al Rantel, for whom I’ve been filling in, has announced that he has been diagnosed with a highly treatable form of lymphoma and is now undergoing chemotherapy. I’ll read his announcement letter on the air at the top of the 7pm hour. If you like, feel free to leave your messages here for Al, and the KABC website also has a place for updates and where you can leave your best wishes. Al’s a great guy and considers his listenership his family. Please send your prayers and best vibes to him through this difficult time.
Thank you so much. I heard it too.
Thank G-d he has something he can recover from. He is in chemo now -— POOR AL, you know how he is proud of his thick hair. Well, maybe it will grow back even thicker. Some people end up with different hair after, like thicker or curlier.
They said there is something on the KABC.com website for us to leave messages for Al; I will go check it out.
They each have their own strengths.
Miller is the intellectual politician and comedian for sure.
Am I a girl or what? I am reading through the pages of good wishes for Al and crying!
I think he is the most underrated guy on L.A. radio. He’s a workhorse and he is one of those guys who is so good he makes it look easy. Then he’s off the air and you realize you were starting to take his gift for granted.
May he have an easy time through his treatments and be well and back on the air soonest.
I heard him quite often and I would say he was a gentleman conservative who DID NOT flaunt the sexuality.
He’a good and we hope and pray he’ll be OK.
Seems he is a good guy.
His sexuality does not much affect his deep conservatism. He was always against gay marriage, against the Gay Agenda, pro-Boy Scouts, pro-family and responsible parenting, etc. His only flip was against Bush, which I did too around the same time as Al.
Have a nice night, I have to get ready to drive home from Los Angeles soon.
I am dismayed to hear this. Thanks for posting, Yaelle.
Al is the guy who usually fills in for others, not the other way around.
I figured he practically LIVES at the studio.
I met him once and he is the nicest person.
He’s a decent and fair guy, I wish him the best.
Stay safe on those wet roads!
I am envious that you met him. He does seem to be extremely genuine. I’ve been on the air with him a bunch of times over the last 10 years and he is probably the most courteous host on the air today.
And those expressions / analogies he always comes up with! He is as witty as anything.
As a side note, I was diagnosed with Leukemia 2 yeas ago and went to Cedars for a second opinion on treatment. Those people know their stuff. He’s in good hands.
I admit I don’t have time to listen to everyone on the radio, but Al is very committed and loyal when he takes up an issue. He doesn’t equivocate.
Larry Elder is another genuine, nice guy that I have met once. They both do a lot of good things that few hear about.
They are family to a lot of people in L.A. and, God knows, we need it in this town.
I’ve met Al a couple times and called his show several times. He is gay but seldom talks about it. He is fiscally conservative, against gay marriage, and against the gay radical agenda. He absolutely eviscerates the lefties on his show.
He just retired
http://www.ocregister.com/articles/rantel-pain-air-2470982-hip-told
He’s moving to Vancouver to lick his wounds (recover)
He had lymphoma
Teeth fell out from that
Slipped on oil and now needs hip replacement
The local yokel talk show knows him and talked about it
