Unreal ID (Illegal immigrants will always drive says lib-Balt-Sun)
Baltimore Sun ^ | January 22, 2008 | sun editorial

It appears Maryland will sit out the state rebellion against the federal Real ID program. Gov. Martin O'Malley's announcement last week that the Motor Vehicle Administration will comply with the costly and controversial program is unfortunate but not entirely unexpected.

As recently as last month, MVA officials had been floating the idea of a two-tiered approach to driver's licenses that would create one that met federal security standards and one that didn't require so-called proof of legal presence. But no doubt the negative reaction given New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's similar proposal (from which he eventually backed down) had something to do with it.

So here's the consequence: By 2010, current and future driver's license holders will have to provide far more elaborate proof of identity and residency. For most people, that means original birth certificates and Social Security cards (not just numbers or copies) and waiting in long lines at local MVA offices, which will be swamped.

Illegal immigrants won't necessarily stop driving, but they likely won't be licensed, trained or have car insurance - bad news for the rest of us. Their lives, as members of the country's 11 million undocumented underclass, are just going to get a little worse.

Such a sacrifice might seem acceptable if it ensured the nation's safety, but it doesn't. Surely any terrorist capable of sneaking into the country is equally adept at forging a birth certificate from one of the 6,000 agencies that produce them. And, of course, the next Timothy McVeigh will suffer no particular hardship.

Some states have objected to this program - seven have refused to comply, and 17 have passed legislation condemning it.

Perhaps the program may yet be undone by the White House's next occupant. Maryland will just have to watch from the sidelines.

QUISLING: a synonym for traitor, someone who collaborates with the invaders of his country.

U.S. Constitution, Article 4 Section 4:

"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government,

and shall protect each of them against Invasion;"

Invasion: \In*va"sion\, n. [L. invasio: cf. F. invasion. See Invade.] [1913 Webster]

1. The act of invading; the act of encroaching upon the rights or possessions of another; encroachment; trespass.

But obviously their lives will be better than being part of the documented underclass in Mexico, otherwise they'd go back there.

Close, but the truth is it would shine to much light on Hillary and the Dems and MSM are providing as much cover for her derria$$ as possible.

***Their lives, as members of the country’s 11 million undocumented underclass, are just going to get a little worse.***

Multiply that by at least 2, safe bet would be multiply by 3, and at the extreme high end, multiply by 4.

Illegal alien, illegal drivers license, illegal to stay.
Deport and adios. Only manipulative politicians seeking the pandering votes will allow such a travesty to continue.

There is a big sign in Longview TX advertising the sale of car insurance to illegals. It says (in Spanish, of course) “No license? No problem.” Now that’s a true entrepeneur.

Can someone please explain or clarify to me how Maryland is currently a state that doesn't require proof of US citizenship or legal residency for obtaining a driver's license?

When I began the process to get a Maryland driver's license, I was expected to present my original birth certificate. I found out later that a US passport was also acceptable. For foreigners, a valid foreign passport plus certain INS documents are required.

Where does it state that Maryland would give a license to someone who doesn't have such documentation?

Here's a link to the MVA website regarding obtaining a driver's license.

People are just going to shoplift anyway, so why have laws against theft?

One upside of the housing bust is that there will be much less incentive for the “undocumented” to stay here. Although housing construction has hit a brick wall, official employment (payrolls) haven’t dropped much, and even constructiuion sector employment hasn’t dropped in a way that would be consistent with the obvious recession in that sector. The job cuts have mostly been in unofficial employment, so far at least.

I'm reading the links you supplied and they seem to match the list I linked to at the MVA. I know this sounds irritating, but I am genuinely not seeing it. I suppose someone could present a valid foreign passport and valid foreign driver's license. Is this how an illegal could get a Maryland driver's license?

I suppose an MVA employee could be in on a scam and let an illegal with fake documents have a driver's license, but of course that is not the proper procedure.

It's all here for the illegals.

http://www.mvamaryland.com/Resources/DL-197.pdf

• Utility, telephone bill or cable/satellite TV bill*

Residential rental contract (apartment lease or other rental of real property)*

• Major credit card bill

Residential service contract (refers to services performed at the address of residence; for example, TV repair, lawn service, exterminator contract, cable or satellite television)

• Court Order of Probation, Order of Parole or Order of Mandatory Release

• Canceled check with imprinted name and address*

That penultimate one about probation is pretty funny. Bank of America and Chevy Chase Bank are in on most of the rest.

If you’re caught driving w/o a license, you should be arrested. If you’re arrested and found to be in this country illegally, you should be deported.

Problem solved.

I like how there is a "Register to Vote" image on the bottom of the "out of country" driver's license application. :/

Ok, so you bring a foreign driver's license and a foreign passport to satisfy the "Primary Sources" requirement. So... my guess is right, if you use the foreign driver's license and foreign passport, you would not need any INS documents to back those up.

For the "proof of residency" you can then bring any rental contract, credit card bill or utility bill. As these proofs of residency can be easily had by an illegal, that would be how they'd get in. I think I am understanding it now.

FYI - I'm not an illegal. :)

Just consider Maryland as a third world country when it comes to the United States. We zig when everyone else zags, always been that way.
