DELTONA, Fla. -- A Volusia County nursing home resident who was found with maggots in one of his eyes, an infected breathing tube, a partially inserted cathater and bed sores has died, according to his family.

Anthony Digiannurio, of Deltona, was 82 years old when he was transported in November from the University Center West nursing home to Florida Hospital DeLand, where staff members discovered the ailments.

It is not known if the cause of death was related to the aforementioned conditions.

According to a DeLand police report released in November, a representative from University Center West said that the man had constant care from multiple hospice workers and two certified nursing aides at the nursing home.

Officials from the state Department of Children and Families were investigating the incident.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has found 19 deficiencies at the facility since June 2006.

“According to a DeLand police report released in November,...”

So??? The Police had purpose to investigate last November?
Wondering what is missing from this story.

Long term care facilities can be dicey places. Pick them (for yourselves or parents) carefully. From last week around here:

State tries to close assisted living facility

FORT WORTH -- Some residents at a Fort Worth assisted living facility were physically abused or made to sleep on metal bed frames, and one had his food taken away for inappropriate behavior, the Texas attorney general's office contends in a lawsuit seeking to close the home.

Bertha McCoy, manager at Oasis Village, was responsible for the conditions, according to the suit. In one case, state investigators reported, they were told that she hit a resident, threw cold water on him and made him walk outside in the cold in his underwear as punishment for masturbation.

In other cases, residents told state inspectors that she threatened people with a hammer, according to court documents...

Whoever is in charge of that nursing home needs to be in jail, and the family of this man should be more than ashamed of themselves for allowing this.

My Mother is 81, and in good health. However, I’m already preparing for the day she will need constant care. I’ll be taking care of her, maybe with the help of home health care, and she will not be put into a nursing home under any circumstances. I have been planning for this for a long time, work at home so I can be here, and have recently renovated my home in preparation for the day she can no longer live alone.

I know there are cases where families have no choice, but I am dedicated to being there for my Mom when she needs me, as she was for me when roles were reversed.

My cousins had to place an aunt in a nursing home recently. They all work and have family commitments that made it necessary. They tried taking care of their Mom, but she made it impossible for them to do so. However, one of her three daughters will be there at the nursing home with her every day.

It tears my heart out when I read of these cases, where elderly people are warehoused in nursing homes and forgotten by their families.

maggots only eat dead flesh/meat..they do not take one bite of live flesh..........

I hate it when maggots are coming out of the eyes.

How long was the poor soul dead before they freeking NOTICED it?

Cordially,

They probably forgot to feed him for the last couple months. Unfortunate oversight.

Perhaps the scariest aspect of life on earth: Who will care for you when you can’t care for yourself?

I wonder if he pulled on his catheter, and the staff was unaware....I wonder if they tried maggot therapy on his bed sores and a few maggots got up to his eyes?....any tube that is in the body will eventually be infected....

sounds like a horrible death but I wonder why he was in the nursing home to begin with...and why his condition was so bad that he had to be on a breathing tube and a catheter and have bed sores?...

maybe he was a chronically sick elderly person?

That’s what happens when you stare at Hillary for too long.

Seriously though, poor guy.

Go here and scroll down till you find the NH name....
Their last survey was in 2/6/07 (which is about right).

They had 17 tags....which is bad, but if you scan there are others worse.

None of whom cared enough to actually do their job, apparently.

OK so if no one else will do it, I will...
This kinda flies in the face of good health care, doesn’t it?

At your birth and in your infancy, thank your lucky stars if you have good parents; THEY take care of you. The care continues until you are grown.

They deserve the best you can do for them whenever they get old and need help. Sometimes, especially with the children of the very elderly - their kids are OLD themselves by the time their parents are old, the best the kids can do is not always optimal by a lot of standards.

I’m an only child with a husband who has had multiple major surgeries over the last twenty years and required a LOT of care from me. Add to that, he did not LIKE or nurture my parents (I stuck with him and maybe shouldn’t have due to some other considerations, but that’s the past) and you have a great recipe for a really hard time. I simply BROKE in the last couple of weeks of their lives with both my parents; didn’t know where to turn for help - but, think I did the best I could at the time.

Thanks. Don’t think I’d much trust the inspectors either but I guess they do give violations.

Ah,
the inspections are brutal, believe me. The surveyors don’t play favorites and they don’t let stuff slide....and they come unnannounced and can shut you down on that day if they want.

Florida, for the last 8 years or so has become a hotbed of lawsuits, to the point it’s harder and harder to find certain disciplines willing work in LTC. Because of this, paperwork, care plans, QI projects have become more and more complex and time consuming.

The only thing is this facility appears to have had an inspection a year ago and they were due another about now. A lot can happen in a year. Change in staff, admins, DON’s etc can make all the difference.

Guess they’re getting a survey now ;)
