NEW YORK (CNN) -- The New York City Board of Health voted unanimously Tuesday to require all city chain restaurants to post calorie data on their menus.
Chain restaurants already must make the calorie counts of their menu items publicly available, but beginning March 31 they will have to put the numbers on menu boards and menus. The change will affect restaurants with 15 or more outlets -- roughly 10 percent of all city restaurants, according to a news release from the city's health department.

What is different this time?
Nanny, nanny, nanny.
FOOD POLICE ON A RAMPAGE; and I suspect there’s much more of this to come! We’ve achieved sufficient technological advancement to do Onstar and GPS mapping we can require automated calorie intake monitoring on every citizen; those who over indulge would have their food priviledges revoked which could only be regained by hours of exercize.
Huh! And you thought they were only going after the wretched anti-social smokers!
Oh, and by the way; have you done your 60 hours of “voluntary” community service this month? If not, you’ll have to fork over 10% of your monthly income to the Community Service Bureau!
the funny thing is the only people who will care about the nutritional information are those who are truely concerned about their health-and they are going to avoid the “bad” food anyway.
Does anyone (Bloomberg and his stooges) think that some 400 pound slob who waddles in to one of these restaurants is going to give a crap about how many total grams of fat or calories are in a triple burger with mayo, cheese and bacon?
Yes, they’ll go with the item with the most calories.
Hahhaahahaha.. you grossly overestimate the barrier of entry into the restaraunt business.
The chains pull out, someone else will take their spot tommorrow, and gladly post their calories on their menus.
Restaraunt business has one of the lowest barriers of entry in the world... all you need is a heat sorce and a spatula.
Why limit this to chains? Whatever happened to equal protection under the law? Why does Burger King have to disclose how many calories are in its cheeseburgers but Tavern on the Green doesn’t?
Nah, they'll just revoke your free health care. No, they wouldn't do that -- they'll put you in food-sensitivity training until you see the error of your ways.
New York just raised the cost of doing business in the city. Real bright.
I’m against the law because I don’t need a nanny state, but how much does it cost to post some calorie numbers. It would take about one minimum wage employee about 2 hours. How does it raise the cost of doing business?
If you go to the websites of the bigger chains, the info is posted. Has been for years.
That’s my point. The 2nd circuit ruled for the Restaurant Association in September for the reaons you just stated.
New signage -- just for New York City -- that is different from the rest of the country; maintaining NYC-unique signage as menus change; etc.
bump
And a pot full of money. Restauranteurs must pay their purveyors upon delivery. All food and drink that is for sale in a restaurant has already been paid for.
You also must be conversant with the byzantine regulations of the governing health board.
So you put $50K into the place, sign a lease, hire a cook, a waiter and a janitor, open the doors and hope somebody walks in.
That takes more nerve than I have.
