Noise and More Noise at Giuliani Event (Paul supporters disrupt Rudy)
AP ^ | 22 JANUARY 2008 | AP

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — What happens when a Rudy Giuliani campaign event, Ron Paul spoilers and anti-abortion protesters collide? Not a press conference, that's for sure.

Giuliani's campaign scheduled what is known in the political world as a "meet and greet," a supposedly impromptu opportunity for a candidate to stroll through a place where lots of people are gathered. In fact the event is planned in advance.

It was no secret that the Republican presidential candidate and former New York mayor was going to be at TooJay's Original Gourmet Deli on Tuesday.

So when Giuliani showed up at the shopping mall where the restaurant is, he was greeted by supporters, reporters and staff, and a few dozen enthusiastic backers of Paul, a long-shot GOP rival. The Paul backers have shadowed Giuliani at many events. At the deli, they held signs behind his head so that any camera shot of Giuliani could appear as an advertisement for Paul.

After Giuliani worked the crowd inside, aides signaled to the media that he would take a few questions on the plaza outside the restaurant. A spot was selected, a rope line set up. Then Giuliani emerged, and things fell apart.

The Paul loyalists had really healthy lungs. Their repeated shouts of "Ron Paul! Ron Paul!" were loud enough that no one could think, much less speak. The Giuliani people countered with "Rudy! Rudy!" to keep their guy in the game.

And then came the anti-abortion contingent. They were an even smaller crowd but outshouted the other two groups. "Rudy is not a true conservative! Rudy is a traitor to innocent life! You need to go to confession!"

Giuliani gave it his best shot. For nearly three minutes, the reporters around him tried to ask questions. He gamely tried to answer about his campaign strategy, Iraq, the economy. He tried to quiet people down, and so did others, but to no avail.

So Giuliani pulled the plug and suggested the question session move inside. The conditions were really cramped, but at least everyone could hear.

I think we’re going to find out that the Ron Paul supporters are 5th column operatives.

And I’m no supporter of Rudy.

“You need to go to confession!”

That probably applies to the AP reporters as well as Rudy.

Ron Paul supporters are unruly children.

Trying to debate with one on FR is the same way - childish name calling and utter nonsense is what they advocate.

Ron Paul needs to register as an Independent and stop disgracing the GIP further with his ridiculous “policies” and his mindless “supporters”. Such an embarrassment ... they make Hillary look sane!

I’m not either but there is no excuse for these unruly CHILDREN to be on the loose. They’re a bunch toddlers lacking civilized of manners - just like typical LIBERALS. They should be BANNED from normal people ... perhaps ILLEGAL drugs destroyed their minds?

Whatever, Ron Paul and his mob disgust me.

Has there ever been a worse field of candidates? We essentially have a “B” movie on our hands, ‘the Land of the Walking Dead’ where it has come to the point that we feel compelled to defend one loser from another despite the pain.

Man... what a miserable mess.

A little pressure from some Ron Paul fans and Rudy cuts and runs. He ALWAYS cuts and runs - Iowa, New Hampshire, Michigan, South Carolina.

Now, he'll go make a speech somewhere talking about how tough he is.

"I was never afraid of those Ron Paul bullies. I was never afraid for a moment."

Not likely!

http://www.freerepublic.com/%5Ehttp://www.house.gov/paul/tst/tst2008/tst012008.htm

t has been over 6 years since the atrocities of September 11 were committed and there are still some very basic measures that need to be taken to bring the perpetrators to justice and make America safer. I have proposed legislation to help with these efforts and will continue to fight in Congress for the safety and security of the American people.

My legislation entitled The Marque and Reprisal Act of 2007 (HR 3216) makes the surgical strike option available to the President in our mission to capture Bin Laden. Our military has been pursuing him without result for far too long now, and it is high time ALL constitutional tools were utilized in the hunt for this dangerous madman. As an American it sickens me to know that Bin Laden and top leaders of al Qaeda remain at large and thumbing their noses at us, while we unravel the sacred fabric of our constitution out of fear. It is Osama Bin Laden and the perpetrators of terrorist attacks that ought to be afraid of us, not the other way around. The answers are found in the Constitution. We should boldly root out the perpetrators and not let them get away with their crimes against us. As the home of the brave we should use Letters of Marque and Reprisal to bring Bin Laden to justice.

Also, we need to take serious steps to prevent terrorists from gaining easy access to targets on our soil. Quite alarmingly, even with the knowledge that the 19 terrorist hijackers entered our country legally, and that 15 of them were from Saudi Arabia , student visas from terrorist sponsoring countries are still far too easily obtained. In a baffling move President Bush struck a deal with Saudi King Abdullah in 2005 to allow 21,000 more Saudi young men into the US on student Visas. Of course, not all students from terror sponsoring countries are terrorists, but I place a higher premium on the security of the American people than the convenience of citizens of hostile countries. We should not be making the goals of would-be terrorists easier to accomplish, but rather should be vigilant about defending against enemies at every turn. They should not be slipping through our doors so easily, using our immigration laws against us, and that is why I proposed the Terror Immigration Elimination Act (HR 3217) to toughen standards for VISAS from countries on the State Department’s list of terrorist sponsoring countries in addition to Saudi Arabia . Just as you decide who to invite to a dinner party in your home, we should be in charge of who we allow in this country, without apology.

A lot has been done to fight the War on Terror and much of it has been misdirected, but there are some tools still needed and more progress to be made. My bills The Marque and Reprisal Act of 2007 and The Terror Immigration Elimination Act are logical steps in the right direction.

What is with all of this Ron Paul nonesence? Ron Paul is a libertarian with very dubious credentials. He is not a republican, he is not a conservative, nor does he have any concept at all of the modern and dangerous world we are living in. It is long past time for the RNC to tell him not to let the door hit him in the ass on the way out!

You do realize that polls ask for “all comers” to register a “vote”?

You do realize that protests are held in public?

You do realize that a campaign stop is an event held in public for supporters of a candidate to hear their candidate?

Disrupting a candidate’s speech to supporters is not protest in a conventional sense. It is disruption. It denies the speaker his right to free speech and free assembly. The invaders think their right to gather to disrupt trumps the original organizer’s right to assembly.

http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a39ede0647a84.htm

I was a participant in the FReep of the Gore Campaign's conference call with the news media.  The purpose in this post is really to set the record straight concerning what ABC has placed on their website concerning what transpired.  A snippet of Real Player "evidence" of the crash is above.   Actually, I think it is important to understand how quickly this all took place:
  1. Initial Post under Breaking News at 10:38:49 PST
  2. First Follow-up post to the article at 10:44:00 PST
  3. My entry into the conference call at 10:59:03 PST

At the point I entered the call, it was obvious that it had been in progress for an unknown amount of time.  The questions were going back and forth from the reporters to the two Gore campaign staff very rapidly.  You can see a summary of some of the discussion items in this post by DoozerDude a member of Free Republic since 9/6/2000.  In this post, he admits to pressing the # sign.  However, he was doing it very intermittently, without much frequency...it actually sounded like a technical glitch sound.  It was annoying, not a free for all ruckus (yet).  I settled into listening and thought about some of the news items that I would like to ask, and even posted to Free Republic for suggestions as to the question(s) that we should ask at 11:04:16 PST  At 11:05:12 PST the first FRelch was reported.  I heard it also and it was "performed" during a question by the Detroit Free Press reporter.  It sounded just as if he had belched, except in this case, we know it was a FRelch.  I only heard it once at that point,  and because it had been perfectly inserted into the reporter's question, I found it extremely humorous, so much so that I removed the phone from my mouth, covering it in fact,   in order to relieve myself from pent-up laughter.   Although I found this funny, I heard in the background a female voice that sounded like she was yelling something.  It was difficult to hear, but clearly exposed us as an unwelcome element in the conference call.   Although the lady was hard to hear,  felt that it was distracting from what could be a huge FReep!  So at 11: 05:31 PST  I posted this, " Stay quiet! Let's FReep this with quality"   A few other FRelches could be heard, but again, they were simply a distraction, not a complete free for all as some may have led you to believe.  Some background music of some sort began playing, actually very lightly and I didn't recognize the tune, although it sounded familiar to me.  If it comes to me I'll post it in this thread...it sounded like soft rock or pop.  Although these minor activities were going on, the conference call continued with a volley of questions back and forth to the Gore team. A question came from a a FReeper and was reported at 11:10:53 PST.  It sounded very professional and was well-stated.  They tried to answer it but simply spun an answer out.    I did not approve of the childish things that were being done, therefore, at 11:11:05 PST FReeper Scot-free admitted to his FRelching.  At 11:13:48 PST Hillary's Lovely Legs posted that, " . I am listening to about 50 people and it's not making a heck of a lot of sense. Most of them are saying how much they love Gore"  This is absolutely true, but more importantly is not an indication that the conference call had broken into a free for all (yet).  HLL's post simply was the truth, the reporters were falling all over themselves to ask absolutely inane softball questions of the Gore people.  At 11:14:44 PST Lurking2Long posted that he was going to "bust a gut" as I had already as mentioned above.  Because of the question concerning Tennessee and the well-timed FRelching, I cannot fault him for having to bust his gut.

At 11:15:21 PST The music and some FReeps began asking questions all at once.  I posted to everyone at this time, "Please everyone ask intelligent questions and TURN THE MUSIC OFF!"  I knew that this was the beginning of the end of this absolutely once in a FReep time opportunity.  At 11:16:22 PST DoozerDude reports that a question was asked about the Union vote not being enthusiastic in the state of Michigan and also reported hearing the music in the background which was beginning to highly irritate me and others.  Someone in the pool of reporters told someone to shut-up at this point.  I believe it was the reporter from the Detroit Free Press.   At 11:17: 29 True-stu once again reminded the participants to show some class.  Unfortunately, our advise was not heeded.

At 11:18:02 PST I asked my question concerning the Drudge Report linking Al Gore to the very anti-homosexual group and website Godhatesfags.com. I didn't mention the Drudge Report in my question, the Gore people asked the question, "From the Drudge Report?"   I asked if Gore was concerned that photos were being passed around on the Internet showing him and the website's founder arm in arm, and whether there was concern in the campaign of alienating a core voting block.  I actually let myself down, and you all down, because I know there are so many more important questions that I could have asked.  I was surprised that they tried to answer my question, and I followed it up stating something to the effect, "So has Al Gore then changed his mind about homosexuals in order to get votes?"   Anyway, I  let everyone down.   My apologies.  The atmosphere was not yet total anarchy as my questions were clearly heard, understood and responded to.   The exchange below then took place after my question:

I think Lurking2Long needs to do some heavy apologizing.   At 11:18:45 PST  The final question (serious from a reporter) concerning Florida was asked and answered.  After this question, as the Realplayer audio file above shows, they mentioned that they would take one final question.  At this point, all heck broke loose.  Literally. Pounds signs were pressed, laughter, "Yeah baby", FReepers yelling "Free Republic!", and all that you hear above in the audio file was heard.  Much of it was entirely juvenile, but seeing that it was the final question, I found it to be extremely funny, as I think most of you would too.  It was the intermittent mumbling and other noises that made the FReep of this conference call an amateur FReep event.  We tried to stop them and ask some entertaining FReeping questions, but alas, those guilty ones could not control themselves.

At 11:19:55 PST Hillary's Lovely Legs reported the call as being over.  I hung up and did not want to linger as some did.  I had FReeped them and was satisfied with the result, but very disappointed in the actions of some others.

Finally, I must say that at about the midway point, I noticed the 2 way taping beep and knew that the call was being or had been recorded.  The ABC News audio file represents the absolute worst parts of the conference call and excludes my question and others that were very, very good.

It was a spur of the moment FReep.  I think that the next time, and I pray that there is, that Politico2 would limit who he provides this  very, very good political information and political opportunity to.  Thanks to Politico2 who cared enough to share the information.  We need to do better next time. Lots better.

"Rudy cuts and runs. He ALWAYS cuts and runs - Iowa, New Hampshire, Michigan, South Carolina."

He also cut and ran from the 9/11 commission where he could have made a real contribution to 9/11 instead of making speeches about how tough he is.

“Why is it that Ron Paul supporters always seem like such jerks? They have to be loud, in-your-face, spamming and obnoxious everywhere they go. Those people are just plain rude and juvenile.”

See post 47.

When we do it, it’s called Freepin’, baby!
