House sustains Bush veto of health bill
The House of Representatives on Wednesday sustained President George W. Bush's second veto of bill to expand a popular federal children's health program.
On a vote of 260-152, the Democratic-led House fell short of the needed two-thirds majority to override Bush on a measure certain to be an issue along with the slowing economy in this year's congressional and presidential elections.
Pushed by Democrats but also supported by many Republicans, the bill was aimed at providing health insurance to about 10 million children in low- and moderate-income families, compared to about 6.6 million children currently enrolled in the program. Taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco products would have been increased to pay for the additional coverage.
The program is designed to help families unable to afford private health insurance, but who earn too much to qualify for the Medicaid health care program for the poor.
Bush vetoed a version of the bill in October but Congress quickly passed another one that included some changes but not enough to satisfy the White House, which opposed the tax increase.
Bush has said the funding level sought by the Democrats for the health program would have expanded it beyond its original intent of covering poor children and was a major step toward government-run health care.
Democrats say the additional money was needed to ensure coverage to more children who lack health care coverage.

Sounds like Reid and Pelosi got the schip kicked out of them.
Wow Bush met a spending bill he didn’t like.
He must have misunderstood it or something.
Pelosi and company lose again.
Good news.
Woo Hoo !!!
But, but...the little childrens??????
Yay, some good news today.
Maybe someone will hold their breath...You’d think after their long list of 2007 accomplishments they’d be happy. I’m still in awe over those first “hunard” days.
What’s that old saying about “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result”?
Bush gets it right, sometimes.
You really don't follow the issues do you! Your statement makes you sound ignorant of the subject of the recent SCHIPs bill.
Poor 24 year olds what will they do without insurance.
How will crimmigrants get insurance now?
Question - has anything Pelosi backed/authored/supported bill passed yet?
The president wins again!
She got the food upgraded in cafeteria, now clerks can’t afford to eat there.
“Question - has anything Pelosi backed/authored/supported bill passed yet?”
Surely something. Perhaps a new post office got named or a national day was set aside to honor drs. that administer botox. Has to be something after 365 days..doen’t there.
Ah, the spin goes on. You’d think AP would say “3.4 million additional” children, but that’d be too readily understood by the public I guess.
The Dims keep bringing this up so that AP, Reuters, and the NYT, et al. can run stories about how Bush and those mean Republicans hate poor children.
Good news.”

Yes it is..........good for Bush.
Now if he’d just back off Israel and build the fence, we’d all get along.
Typical Bush hater.
Ignore what he did and trash him.
You will come to regret your attitude when you find out what we have to put up with the next four years.
But - never mind - you would not be able to see what he accomplished if every item was printed out for you. You would not read it.
“Typical Bush hater.
Ignore what he did and trash him.”
Typical bushbot. I didn’t trash him. I am just amazed he vetoed a spending bill. How many others has he vetoed - vs how many entitlement programs has he created out of thin air?
“ut - never mind - you would not be able to see what he accomplished if every item was printed out for you. You would not read it.”
How about what he’s done to us?
Massive spending increases
Massive debt
Letter from DOJ to USSC supporting the DC gun ban
Sending hundreds of millions to Fatah terroprists
Pressuring Israel to leave Gaza and now Jerusalem
Open borders
Compean and Ramos in jail, but buddy Scooter off the hook
Nation building in Iraq
Says Iran is killing US troops but does nothing
Now says we can negotiate with them
Supported RINOs over Conservatives like Specter over Toomey and Arnold over McClintock
Harriet Miers
Called the Minutemen “Vigilantes”
Signed Campaign FInance reform - so he disrespects the 1st and 2nd amendments
Massive prescription drug entitlement
That’s just off the top of my head.
10th Amendment: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. In fact, in one example where Jefferson reflected on the Founder's division of federal and state government powers, he mentioned that the Founders had trusted the states, not the federal government, with the care of the people. See for yourself.
"Our citizens have wisely formed themselves into one nation as to others and several States as among themselves. To the united nation belong our external and mutual relations; to each State, severally, the care of our persons, (emphasis added) our property, our reputation and religious freedom." --Thomas Jefferson: To Rhode Island Assembly, 1801. ME 10:262 http://tinyurl.com/onx4jNote that the states can always exercise their Article V powers to amend the Constitution to essentially add health care to Sec. 8 of Article 1 to authorize the feds to deal with health care.
In the meanwhile, however, our government leaders are unthinkingly keeping FDR's dirty federal spending policies alive. This post (<-click) explains how FDR butchered the Constitution in order to establish his New Deal programs, the precursors of today's constitutionally unauthorized federal spending programs.

Around 50 Republicans votes against the president. So much for party discipline.
At least one piece of very very good news today.
Pres.Bush has this one right.
“Thats just off the top of my head.”

Frankly, I prefer EMPIRICAL vs anecdotal evidence:
THE ESSENTIAL PRESIDENT BUSH
by The Anchoress
A much-esteemed, long-neglected friend sent an email this morning, which was delightful to recieve. At one point he mentioned this post from yesterday and wrote: I think (President Bush) has lost his bearings. but then, so did Moses from time to time, its quite understandable.
That made me wonder a little - has President Bush lost his bearings, or have we? Is it President Bush who has broken faith with his base or have they?
When I read my friends line, I thought of a line from Pride and Prejudice, in which Elizabeth Bennett says in new appreciation of Mr. Darcy, In essentials, I believe, he is very much what he ever was.
Perhaps I am a dim bulb, but President Bush has never surprised me, and that is probably why I have never felt let down or betrayed by him. He is, in essentials, precisely who he has ever been. He did not surprise me when he managed, in August of 2001, to find a morally workable solution in the matter of Embryonic Stem Cells. He did not surprise me when, a month later, he stood on a pile of rubble and lifted a broken city from its knees. When my FDNY friends told me of the enormous consolation and strength he brought to his meetings with grieving families, I was not surprised. When the World Series opened in New York City and the President was invited to throw the first pitch, there was no surprise in his throwing (while wearing body armor) a perfect strike.
You can read the entire commentary here:

Notice how you complain because he is nation building in Iraq and also complaining that the he does nothing about the killing of soldiers in Iran.
I suppose if he did do something - it would be “nation building in Iran” on your list.
He can’t win with you. But, you will enjoy the next president and I feel sure you will support that one.
What a great post. Thank you.
I love this President because of the traits none of us were looking for as we elected him.
Mainly his values, his guts, his deliberate slow weighing of actions and when taking that action, his steadfastness when absolutely all are against him. I also value his ability to hunker down and work, allowing others to bicker over his actions, while he takes care of the business of leading this nation. Great job. We will miss him.
I thank God we were given George Bush and I value him as a great leader.
Of course, I have the ability to ignore the media conception of him as their values have nothing to do with my values.
I invite you to read my post at #27 (follow the link, you’ll LOVE it)!
We better all get along while we can - bad times are coming.
“He did not surprise me when he managed, in August of 2001, to find a morally workable solution in the matter of Embryonic Stem Cells.”
He didn’t surprise me by thinking like a big government Republican that the Federal Government should be in the medical research business.
“He did not surprise me when, a month later, he stood on a pile of rubble and lifted a broken city from its knees.”
I was in NYC then, it wasn’t a broken city by any means. New Yorkers are a tough breed.
“When my FDNY friends told me of the enormous consolation and strength he brought to his meetings with grieving families, I was not surprised.”
That has nothing to do with any of the stupid policy positions I mentioned. You’re appealing to emotion.
I provided empirical evidence - not you. You are relying on emotion.
“When the World Series opened in New York City and the President was invited to throw the first pitch, there was no surprise in his throwing (while wearing body armor) a perfect strike.”
Emotion. So what? He was at no personal risk. It was a photo op.
Try to discuss some of the things I mentioned, like his addiction to big government, debt, and breaking the campaign promise of no nation building, and stop with the tearjerking.
I’ve read it and it is wonderful. Wish it had been posted in full here often during the last few years.
Maybe you should post it all now although a little late.
We were far more at fault than a man that gave 8 years of his life to help us get the job done. I might add with no help from his congress, Washington, the media, and the conservatives on FR - with the exception of those that spent hours defending him here.
He gave 8 years fighting a war, protecting Americans, and trying to get the conservative agenda through with no help surrounded by hate. And we did what? Pounded out hate on our computers to show how conservative we are and how ineffective he was.
See why I think there is no hope for the Republican Party and conservatives? We do not know how to fight the war with the liberals and they run circles around us. All we know how to do is complain - “it is not perfect, it is not perfect”.
We are of no use to anyone other than the liberals.
We will get what we have reaped.
Against who or what are you benchmarking the President’s approach to ‘big’ government, debt, national defense, and so on? On EVERY measure, President Bush possesses a more conservative record (and empirically better ‘numbers’) than President Reagan!
Of course, you’re a supporter of Ron Paul; that’s all I need to know!
[BTW: If you had read the entire commentary, you would have found it FULL of EMPIRICAL evidence — the type of evidence that serves to distinguish a LEADER from a MANAGER!]
“We will get what we have reaped.”
I couldn’t agree more!
Is there any limit to the number of times they can vote to override a veto?
Hey, I like that! Matches up with my new word, illigrants
Guess you would prefer allowing Iraq to be taken over by Syria and Iran who then would have control of the oil rich country.
It would be a hotbed of Al Qaida.
Those that have the intell and those elected to handle the defense of this country made decisions because they were elected to do so. Those decisions will now give us an ally in the Mideast, will prevent Iran taking over Iraq and Iraq will be a free nation - not a terrorist site.
And your option would have given us less oil, more terrorists, a stronger Iran with more power and further turmoil in the mideast.

[Pushed by Democrats but also supported by many Republicans, the bill was aimed at providing health insurance to about 10 million children in low- and moderate-income families,...]
Ah, the proberbial for the children taxpayers monies that goes into the pockets of the rinos and liberals and all their Wahington,D.C. buddies.
Thank the Lord there are still conservatives left. I only wish that President Bush had used that veto pen years ago, he would have been remembered for having done the right thing on domestic policies as well as the war and the lower taxes.
Poor people we must rise and help them, oh the HUMANITY!!!
Excellent.
