Kansas Baptist Church Intends to Picket Heath Ledger's Funeral Because He Played Gay Character
Fox News ^ | 1-23-2008 | Fox News

Posted on 01/23/2008 12:30:06 PM PST by Cripplehawk

Shirley Phelps-Roper of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka said that she and other members will picket Ledger’s United States memorial services, not those held in his native Australia.

“You cannot live in defiance of God,” she said. “He got on that big screen with a big, fat message: God is a liar and it’s OK to be gay.”

A press release circulated by the church references Leviticus 18:22 in the Bible, which states that “thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.”

Don't these bums have anything better to do this is sickening. But they protested our veterans funerals and Mr. Rogers (or at least tried to). So I guess I am not surprised. Oh and RIP Heath Ledger.

That didn’t shut them down, I see?

I would pray for Shirley and Co. to get hit by a bus, but the Lord would never grant that.

He'd sent TWO buses.

I must be confused.... or have the wrong Bible. Mine says “judge not.....” and says that God will do the judging. Folks like these protesters should be ashamed of calling themselves Christians. By now, this young man has already been judged. They don’t have any business protesting his funeral.

With the amount of coverage Ledger's death has gotten over the last 24 hours, you'd think he was a National hero.

Get over it media and agenda driven politicos, the crux of his fame is that he pretended to be gay in exchange for money.

That said, I really liked Ledger as an actor in many of his roles.

The Westboro Baptist folks are a prime example of the religious left and what can happen when a lawyer gone bad gets his license to practice law pulled.

Aren't you judging the Phelps' in violation of what you just said? I'm not supporting the Phelps, just showing that your reading of Scripture is unreasonably narrow. We are also told to judge people by their fruits. "By their fruits you shall know them".

“by their fruits you shall know them” not “by their fruits you shall judge them”

Please explain the difference. The statement was made by Christ to advise us how to judge people who call themselves a prophet or the returned Christ. We are also called on not to "give what is Holy to dogs or cast pearls before swine......" Following this requires the exercise of discernment, or judgment.

What was their reasoning for trying to protest Mr. Rogers' funeral?

Because Fred Rodgers didn't speak out against homosexuality on his show. And because it was a guaranteed way to generate some headlines and snag some publicity..

So we can't judge self proclaimed prophets "by their fruits" (as Jesus instructed) unless they are in our Church? That's nonsense.

Phelps is an active Democrat candidate.

I hold the suspicion that his “religious” protests are a ploy to slur the conservative Christian opposition to homosexuality. It is the most cited example of “hate”. But his party affiliation is rarely discussed even though he has run for office several times.

His antiwar stance also gets less play in the press.

>>Following this requires the exercise of discernment, or judgment.<<

Judging them is not punishing them or their families. They are going to protest at this man’s funeral. I’m sure the family is doing a happy dance about it.

I’m uncomfortable with it and I don’t even know the man.

Judging is disernment that the person’s actions should be avoided, NOT punishing the innocent people who had nothing to do with those actions.

Funerals are for the living. I’m sure Heath himself doesn’t care a lick about this.

These yahoos threatened to protest some of the funerals of the victims of the Va. Tech shooter last year. Then some folks (I don’t know who, really I don’t) made it clear what would happen to them if they showed up at a funeral in rural Virginia.

They decided not to protest that one.

As I said above I don’t support the Phelps, I despise thier activities. And I feel Biblically secure in judging them based on their fruits. They say they are doing the will of Christ. I judge them false on this because their fruits go against everything Jesus ever said.

I think Paul was talking locally. Remember, there were no mass communications in the 1st century. IIRC, Paul was chastising the particular church for taking squabbles between church members to Roman, and hence heathen, courts for settlement. And any member of the church that failed to live in accordance with God’s law was to be expelled from the congregation, ie excommunicated. It’s kinda hard to do that unless the church elders are allowed to judge the person on his conduct. Anybody who was outside the church, ie heathen idol worshippers, were to be ignored unless you were witnessing to them........

I would not screw with Hollywood people either. Yes they seem laid back and peaceful but I guarantee that they won’t put up with this from them. Plus this really pisses me off because Hollywood already has a bad image of religious people and these freaks are not going to make it easier. Damn them!!!
