Changing light bulbs not enough: Gore

From correspondents in Davos

January 25, 2008 05:23am Article from: Reuters

CLIMATE campaigner Al Gore overnight urged world policymakers to change laws "not just light bulbs" in tackling global warming, and a UN official said world market turmoil must not be allowed to delay action.

An annual meeting of world political and business leaders in Davos, Switzerland, this year has scheduled a record number of sessions and workshops on global warming. But a sharp downturn on markets and fears of recession have dominated discussion.

"If we get distracted by the aberrations that you see in the financial market right now it would clearly be very unfortunate," said Rajendra Pachauri, head of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Mr Gore, in a swipe at US President George W. Bush's environmental record, said the election of a new president in November could only bring an improvement.

"In addition to changing the light bulbs, it is far more important to change the laws and to change the treaty obligations that nations have," Mr Gore told delegates, in apparent reference to what he sees as the Bush administration's reluctance to initiate legislation on environmental control.

"Whoever is elected is going to have a different position and a better position. But let's be clear: Whoever the leaders are, this issue is going to be dealt with responsibly and effectively only when there is a sufficient degree of urgency on the part of the people themselves."

His non stop traveling and blabbing is causing more global warming than anything I am doing.

Just think of how much of Al Gore’s hot air has contributed to “global warming”. I have friends of mine who are concerned with the polar ice caps melting. I just pose this question to them. “how long can you keep an ice cube out before it melts?” They give a answer of 4 to 5 minutes. Well I say, the polar ice caps have been around for millions of years, so there is bound to be some some of melting.

So we have movements for better insulation, energy-star appliances, light bulbs that take a quarter of the electricity, LCD TV’s and monitors instead of CRT’s, higher gas mileage vehicles, natural gas power plants, large investments in solar energy, wind farms, ethanol-spiked gasoline, smokestack scrubbers, electronics without lead, huge recycling programs, biodegradable plastics, corn-starch packing material, and it’s still not enough while China gets a pass?

This isn’t about the environment, this is about making the U.S. uncompetitive on the global market.

Let’s start by no longer having the secret service burn fuel in traveling with former VP’s, and limit the rich to owning one home, say 2000 sq. feet and having to travel in not limos but bicycles...and if they go overseas, how about a balloon?

Gore could walk and ride bikes and balloons and that’ll make the air cooler AND he’ll be more healthy! Win win for eveyone!

No more french fries for him either. The obesity problem is costing tax payers ALOT of money and since HIS healthcare is free, we have that say over him more than anyone else!

What a total fraud!

In plain language,

institute cap and trade for carbon credit markets. Al Gore has a special money interest in that.

“This isn’t about the environment”

It’s about creating a 1/2 trillion dollar global carbon credit scheme.

They never say it outright, because they know candor would be their downfall. Therefore they speak in codes like “Kyoto treaty obligations” or “global cooperation.” Invoke “the world” and the idea that America is “against” “the world” and white liberals and lefties get all glassy eyed and suggestive.

Anyone ever wonder what they are going to do about all of the light fixtures that take odd shaped Incandescent bulbs(tubular for instance)? Also very small bulbs? They don’t make cfl bulbs that small. How about candle bulbs, and Christmas bulbs. Appliance bulbs(needing to withstand drastic temps). Ect...

Knowing the dimwits in congress then they probably did not even consider that.

So some 90% of a normal light bulb’s energy is converted to heat and only 10% to light.

Is that a problem during cold days, when your home is needing to be heated anyway? Seems like a great use of energy: You get light, and — bonus — you get heat as well!

And the latest thing he’s done - he didn’t lower his energy usage, he just switched to “off grid” sources so that no one can know how much he’s using.

Someone please explain to me why Gore, the environazis, and the UN always blame America? Gore takes (another) swipe at Bush. How come Gore never takes a swipe at China? Since 2004, China has produced the most CO2 emissions of any nation on the planet. Why doen’t they criticize China? Why don’t they work to get China to change its ways? Has anyone taken an environmental inventory of China lately? Do you know how they are destroying the place? Kinda like the way the USSR destroyed entire ecosystems without any additional thought.

One thing is for sure. These CFL bulbs take more energy to manufacture. They have electronics in them. And lots more materials. semiconductors,Capacitors, resistors,PC boards, coper, wires, magnet wire, ferrite core, lead solder,Mercury,Florescence coating. Did anyone ever consider all of that in relation to energy. They would never withstand EMP either. The old bulbs would be unfazed by EMP.

Plants consume C02 during photosynthesis. However they also produce CO2 simultaneously. However their consumption of CO2 is higher than their production so there is a net reduction in the amount of CO2. Also, as the concentration of CO2 increases, the photosynthetic efficiency increases, thus the net result is a decrease in CO2 concentration.

The largest contributor to Global Warming is Di hydrogen monoxide

(H2O) = water.

Ice also takes up more volume than water so if it did melt, the ocean levels would probably go down. Plus if it gets hot enough to melt the polar caps, the heat will also evaporate the oceans and release it somewhere else in the form of rain, ice, hail, snow.

I for one am tired of all this “green” stuff on the news, fictional shows, etc.

It’s about creating a 1/2 trillion dollar global carbon credit scheme.

Which is about global Marxism. How much do you want to bet that if a scheme ever actually gets put in place, that China and Russia are exempt at least, or actually get paid to pollute? This is about wealth redistribution on a global scale from western Christian nations to pagan communist dictatorships.

I feel like I am living in a science fiction movie.

Good science fiction at least has a grounding in scientific reality. I agree with your reaction but it seems more like a horror movie to me, or at the least, a silly pseudo-scientific fantasy.

We fought and won a nearly 50-year Cold War to avoid this kind of socialist nonsense. Now our "leaders" can't wait to be the first to impose it. Gore may play the most visible role in this horror film but current Presidential candidates from both sides -- with the exception of Giulliani and Romney-- are Gore-bull warming lemmings. This issue may do more damage to America and our sovereignty than any other in the short term. For that reason, since I disagree with Romney on other grounds, that leaves Rudy as my only choice.
