Changing light bulbs not enough: Gore

From correspondents in Davos

January 25, 2008 05:23am Article from: Reuters

CLIMATE campaigner Al Gore overnight urged world policymakers to change laws "not just light bulbs" in tackling global warming, and a UN official said world market turmoil must not be allowed to delay action.

An annual meeting of world political and business leaders in Davos, Switzerland, this year has scheduled a record number of sessions and workshops on global warming. But a sharp downturn on markets and fears of recession have dominated discussion.

"If we get distracted by the aberrations that you see in the financial market right now it would clearly be very unfortunate," said Rajendra Pachauri, head of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Mr Gore, in a swipe at US President George W. Bush's environmental record, said the election of a new president in November could only bring an improvement.

"In addition to changing the light bulbs, it is far more important to change the laws and to change the treaty obligations that nations have," Mr Gore told delegates, in apparent reference to what he sees as the Bush administration's reluctance to initiate legislation on environmental control.

"Whoever is elected is going to have a different position and a better position. But let's be clear: Whoever the leaders are, this issue is going to be dealt with responsibly and effectively only when there is a sufficient degree of urgency on the part of the people themselves."

Al Gore is a (former?) slumlord. You don’t need heat.

They claim those specialty bulbs will be exempt, but of course with most things like this they lie at the start.

Don’t forget motion lights and dimmer switches will be useless with these new bulbs.

Changing light bulbs not enough: Gore

when Gore sells his house and lives in something smaller than mine ... I'll start buying the "I'm fighting global warming" biz ...

Yes you are right. Can’t use dimmers with CFL’s. And can’t use CFL’s in extreme cold. And I have never seen a CFL that can put out much of “Beam” of light.

If Al Gore really cared, he would run for President himself, and probably win. The fact that he does not reveals that he is fundamentally not serious.

Is all of this his revenge for our not electing him?

Thanks to al gore my toilet wont flush. You have to flush and flush and flush and sometimes add a bowl full of water as it’s flushing to get it to actually flush. And we’re going to all be setting around in the dark in a few year’s if this man gets his way.

I just wish he would go away.

Ice also takes up more volume than water so if it did melt, the ocean levels would probably go down. Plus if it gets hot enough to melt the polar caps, the heat will also evaporate the oceans and release it somewhere else in the form of rain, ice, hail, snow.

I for one am tired of all this “green” stuff on the news, fictional shows, etc.

It’s about creating a 1/2 trillion dollar global carbon credit scheme.

Which is about global Marxism. How much do you want to bet that if a scheme ever actually gets put in place, that China and Russia are exempt at least, or actually get paid to pollute? This is about wealth redistribution on a global scale from western Christian nations to pagan communist dictatorships.

I feel like I am living in a science fiction movie.

Good science fiction at least has a grounding in scientific reality. I agree with your reaction but it seems more like a horror movie to me, or at the least, a silly pseudo-scientific fantasy.

We fought and won a nearly 50-year Cold War to avoid this kind of socialist nonsense. Now our "leaders" can't wait to be the first to impose it. Gore may play the most visible role in this horror film but current Presidential candidates from both sides -- with the exception of Giulliani and Romney-- are Gore-bull warming lemmings. This issue may do more damage to America and our sovereignty than any other in the short term. For that reason, since I disagree with Romney on other grounds, that leaves Rudy as my only choice.

I don’t know about motion lights, but they more or less work with the couple of dimmer switches we have. I switched out most all of our incandescents over the past year NOT because of St. Algore, but rather because with the electric bills for A/C down here, I’m looking for all the help I can get (lower cost to keep em lit, less heat put out, plus they supposedly last longer).

You have nailed it. It is all about money. It is a scam that will cost our economy big.

As far as the new high efficiency bulbs, we don’t use that much energy burning light bulbs in the first place. The real user of energy is heating water and warming living spaces. Air conditioning uses lots of energy too.

What if it was discovered that these things emit excessive UV radiation and cause a jump in skin cancers? And, do these things work on dimmer circuits?

What meaning has Leo’s life in the big picture?

Nothing, he’s the evolutionary advancement of a CLOWN.

He’s got to do something to “matter”.

Hollyweird types, I guess they feel guilty AND want to be somehow relevant in the real world...like Brad Pitt, but at least he’s spending his own money to build houses or something.

My how different they are from the Jimmy Stewart’s and Lee Marvin’s!

He wants to keep the stampede going. All he needs is a treaty, then we will never be able to turn back. But the mindless stampede must continue. If people stop for even a moment to think, they will realize how stupid they are being.

I suspect this is why Gore chose not to run for president: He can get much more of his agenda implemented in his current role than he could as president (where he would also be consumed with annoying diversions like Islamic terrorism, the economy, etc.).

He’s learned that there is more money to be made “without Congressional rebuke” by running opposition to the elected government(s) but never running as a candidate.

His political film would never be permitted in classes in public schools if he was “associated” with a political party candidate campaign.

Al you sure set a fine example with your energy hog mansion, private jet trips and limo rides. When Al and Tipper move from their mansion to an 800 sq. ft. energy efficient home that uses solar heating, generates its own electricity with windmills, has a single composting toilet, and no appliances like dishwashers or washers and dryers as well as give up all their vehicles for a single Prius and two bicycles, then I might start taking him more seriously.
