Carson City Steamed at Gov. Jim Gibbons for slicing $283.6 million from the state budget without consulting them, ranking Democrats in the Legislature intend to do something about it -- now and in 2009.
Sen. Bob Coffin of Las Vegas, the Senates senior Democrat, is pushing for the Legislature to sue to overturn the Republican governors decision and force a special legislative session.
Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley, D-Las Vegas, complained that lawmakers and the public had virtually no opportunity to voice their opinions about the reductions. Significant cuts should include the Legislature. Thats our duty, she said.
Democrats lament that the Legislature, through the years, has yielded its power to the executive branch. And now lawmakers want to take it back, arguing they are more accessible to the public than the governor is.

You didn’t think they were going to just let you spend less, did you? Come on!
Go Gibbons! If the Republican party had more guys w/ this kind of backbone, we would be in a lot better shape as a party & nation. He’s taken a lot of heat from both sides of the isle, but has kept to his campaign promises. Can you imagine?
Looks like they did not do their duty in the first place!
Yup, yup!! One of the reasons why I moved here!!! :)
It is so frustrating not to be able to post links to RGJ stories, because there are some classic Dem crybaby quotes in their coverage of the budget cuts.
Gibbons is right on here. The dems can howl all they want and Leslie is the biggest Marxist in Carson City. A real enabler of illegals and Southern Nevada in general. As to the legislators being the representatives of the people that is generally true but since the Nevada Legislature is only in session for 120 days every other year, (thank God) I would argue that the Governor is as accessible as the assemblymen and senators.
In any event, the NEA is absolutely apoplectic over Gibbons right now so that tells me he’s right on target with the cuts..
I am assuming you mean Reno Gazette Journal. If that is the case, check out the Las Vegas Review Journal: http://www.lvrj.com
Yeah, I understand that the Las Vegas papers are open to posting articles but I’m in Reno. We have one “major” paper here and every time I post a link, I get the error message because they are owned by Gannett.
Significant cuts should include the Legislature. Thats our duty.
I think I know where I’d start......
