Choice of Rove as speaker causes controversy at prep school (CT)

Wallingford (AP) _ Students at the Wallingford prep school Choate Rosemary Hall are protesting the choice of former presidential adviser Karl Rove as this year's commencement speaker.

Some plan to walk out, while others are trying to bring comedian Stephen Colbert to campus for an alternative speech. The campus paper has urged the school to reject Rove.

Others say they're interested in hearing what Rove has to say but are not sure the school's June commencement is the best venue because they are afraid he will overshadow the graduates.

Choate trustee Bruce Gelb, former ambassador to Belgium, helped secure Rove as the speaker after plans fell through for a different speaker.

A spokeswoman says Rove was invited to give a speech about broad issues, not a political speech

Interesting...

This will end up being, probably, the most historic speech given at Choate since the welcoming address by the school’s headmaster back in the late 1920’s to incoming students (I think that would be the right time-frame), when the headmaster said “Ask not what your school can do for you... ask what you can do for your school!” Student John F. Kennedy remembered that quote and paraphrased it years later.

Perfect example of the ME,ME,ME generation.

Of Course you want a speaker that will overshadow the graduates....they are selected to teach, not give high-fives!

Exactly. Now back to reason #763 why we have to allow Michael Moore, Machmood Achmedinejad, and Mumia Abu Jamail have their access to the public square.

It is the graduate’s day. If they want to (majority) want to hear from Karl Rove than ok, but if the majority want to hear from Cobert than I think he should be chosen. Remember it is the graduate’s day and not anybody elses.

Perfect example of the ME,ME,ME generation.

Toby Keith has the song:

I wanna talk about me
Wanna talk about I
Wanna talk about number one
Oh my me my
What I think, what I like, what I know, what I want, what I see
I like talking about you, you, you, you, usually, but occassionally
I wanna talk about me
I wanna talk about me

Mumia would cause less controversy, sadly. Yet the one stupud student refers to Rove as evil incarnate. Maybe she would prefer that they ask one of the killers from the Cheshire home invasion to speak. That happened not all that far from Choate.

this is such a joke...Im no Rove fan, in fact I would probably call myself a Rove enemy but does anybody think that the school body would have a care if they had brought in a known LaRaza or black panther as a speaker - I highly doubt it.

Prep school? Poor Rove can’t even get invited to be commencement speaker at a junior college much less real university.

That would have been the slope above the Eaglebrook School. That school is next to Deerfield, but is for grades 6-9.

But wait.

I was always told in school that “we’re not going to tell you what to think, but we’re going to teach you how to think”. Diversity!

I guess they are all for “free speech”, as long as their safe little cocoons aren’t jostled. Hypocrites all.

The barbarians win.

“WALLINGFORD, Conn. (AP) - Following protests from students, former presidential adviser Karl Rove has withdrawn as this year’s commencement speaker at a prestigious prep school, the school’s headmaster said Monday.

The choice of Rove as speaker for the June commencement at Choate Rosemary Hall had led some students to plan to walk out of the ceremony. Others had sought to bring comedian Stephen Colbert to campus for an alternate speech.

Instead of commencement, Rove now will speak at the school on Feb. 11, headmaster Edward J. Shanahan said. Shanahan said he will deliver the commencement address at the school, the alma mater of John F. Kennedy and Adlai Stevenson.

Shanahan said he had asked seniors for their opinions on the proposed commencement speech and many said they wanted to hear from Rove—but at some time other than commencement.

He said they also were concerned that outsiders might disrupt graduation if Rove appeared in June.

In an e-mail to students and staff Monday, Shanahan quoted Rove as saying: “I would not want 12 minutes of remarks to be used as an excuse by a small group to mar what should be a wonderful day of celebration for the members of the 2008 graduating class and their families, so I am delighted to instead accept Choate’s invitation to speak on campus Feb. 11.”

“He was more than understanding,” Shanahan wrote to the students. “He was gracious and generous in his thinking about you and ‘your day.’”

Rove, one of President Bush’s most influential advisers, left the administration last year.”
