The hard-driving Tim Russert blew it. He allowed McCain to slip away with his dishonest characterization of Romney's statement, i.e., Romney never said he favored a specific time for withdrawal. McCain read the first part of the quote but not the second part, where Romney would veto a congressional time table. By now, everyone who is carefully following this knows that McCain's allegation is flatly false.

On another note, a rumor is making the rounds that Fred Thompson will endorse John McCain tomorrow.
I checked with somebody extremely close to the situation. Fred said the other day that he won't endorse for now, and he is not endorsing for now. I suspect this rumor is being leaked by the McCain camp, which was the source of the earlier rumor that Fred was planning on throwing his support behind McCain if he didn't score well in Iowa.

Instead, it's Mark Levin's clear statement that the "Fred is dropping out" rumor came from McCain's camp, and that it seems reasonable to think the false "Fred will endorse McCain" rumor is also coming from the McCain camp.

Coming from a supposed "friend", I bet Fred is spitting nails over this.
Then again, they were friends when Fred was in the Senate...quite a while ago.
Since Fred entered the race, competing against McCain, I bet things aren't good between the two of them, despite media reports.

Originally it was thought that the rumor that Fred would drop out and endorse McCain after Iowa was from the Romney camp. Mark sounds very credible now that he’s got the goods it all started with the McCain campaign. Hmmm.
I do hope Fred does NOT endorse McCain. Better not to endorse anyone than do that. It will not earn McCain ONE new vote but it would garner some lack of respect from many solid FredHeads, who are mostly already moving in the Romney direction at this point.

Well, the rumors that Fred would throw his support to McCain have been flying around for a long time (even long before Fred withdrew from the campaign). It only makes sense that such rumors were coming from the McCain camp, as he is the only one who would benefit from making people believe he would endorse McCain.
Like Steve Forbes did? Or Bill Simon did in the California Governor's race a few years back? My point is that money alone won't do it. And I like candidates who use their their personal wealth to finance their campaigns. Better than having to sell yourself to sleazy opportunists.

As to the Fred-endorsing-McCain rumor, that's been around forever and Mark Levin has said recently that the rumor originated in the McCain camp. There's a current FR thread on that very subject.

The difference that I see is that 1) Mitt didn't support gun rights earlier in his political career, 2) he recently and conveniently joined the NRA just in time for his campaign and 3) he uses the vague term life-long member incorrectly, implying that he's always been a member. Doing that slips right by anyone who's not paying close attention.
That explains why there are contradictory statements and rumors regarding Thompson. His legal advisors have gone to Romney's campaign, along with a lot of staff, so it would make little sense for Thompson to endorse McCain if all his supporters are of the mind to go for Romney.
I don't know that the moves that his staff have made are that good an indication of what Fred will do. Until he endorses someone, I'll take him at his word that he's not endorsing anybody, at least not yet. It would greatly surprise me if he were to endorse McCain though. The rumors of his endorsing McCain have been going on for quite some time, possibly before Iowa.
I admire and love Fred also.
But it was obvious 12 months ago before he even got into the race that Fred was tired and not up to the task of running for President.
He had to be dragged into it for heaven's sake, and only did it finally in Sept. because friends kept badgering him.
Fred can still be a great conservative motivator, but he is past his prime.

I don't care for their politics but I do not hold it against them they hey are able to invest in their own campaigns. I think people should "put their money where their mouth is."
