Sex show at William & Mary OK'd by Nichol
The university's president cites the First Amendment and academic openness in his decision.
WILLIAMSBURG - The Sex Workers' Art Show will take place Monday at the College of William and Mary, after school President Gene Nichol granted students' requests for the controversial show to be held on campus.
The show, which students arranged for, is scheduled for 7 and 9:30 p.m. performances in the University Center's Commonwealth Auditorium, where the show was held last year.
Featuring strippers, prostitutes and other sex workers performing and discussing their work, the show is in the middle of a nationwide tour. Its Web site lists coming performances at Harvard, the University of Michigan and Virginia Commonwealth University. But a VCU administrator said Monday that the show wouldn't be held on campus.
Last year, the show's presence at William and Mary provoked outrage among some alumni and community members, who accused Nichol of an affront on religion and morality. The performance occurred shortly after it became public that Nichol ordered a cross removed from daily display in a campus chapel.
As he did last year, Nichol said this year that he didn't want the show to be held on campus. However, "the First Amendment and the defining traditions of openness that sustain universities" led him to grant permission for the show, he said.
"Censorship has no place at a great university," Nichol said.

Not to worry. W & M is no longer a 'great university'.
“...Whoa no, William and Mary won’t do, now...”
“...coming performances at Harvard...”
I guess this costs extra.
My daughter has applied, but this is the last straw! W&M alumni should be ashamed.
>> This would be bad enough in Calif...but in VA?????
Better be careful, or they may lose the “virgin” in their name. Gonna have to change the name to “Vaginia”, or something.

I always thought you received a higher education so you didn’t have to become a prostitute. Now it seems that is a legitimate career choice. Just hit the streets and save your parents a boatload of money.
You should have mentioned the next line of the Steeley Dan song:
"Now I'm never going back to my old school"
Rim shot. Thank you Henny Youngman.
“Censorship has no place at a great university,” Nichol said.
With this in mind, can the Campus Republicans’ Art Show be far behind?
