Smith & Wesson Receives Order from Colorado State Patrol

Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation , parent company of Smith & Wesson Corp., the legendary 156-year old company in the global business of safety, security, protection and sport, announced today that it has received an order from the Colorado State Patrol for 850 of the company's Military & Police (M&P) Series of advanced-design polymer pistols. The Smith & Wesson M&P40, chambered in .40 S&W, will be issued to each officer of the Colorado State Patrol to replace early-model Smith & Wesson pistols that have served as the primary duty firearms for the department.

I know the NM State Police ditched the Glock in .357 Sig last year and went back to .45’s (either HK or S&W - not sure) due to reliability issues.

i carry the 9mm P226 on duty and a smaller S&W 9mm tactical off-duty. love both of them but wouldnt carry the sig off duty and i wouldnt carry the smith on duty. they have their place.

Plenty of reasons not to like Glocks, but I can't imagine "unreliable" being anywhere near the top of the list.

I'd speculate there's more to the story, perhaps concerns over AD/ND.

OTOH, Glocks and female or small/petite framed shooters sometimes don't mix well, they are prone to FTF malfs if not gripped firmly.

I pumped the cheap steel cased wolf thru my Glock 19 to see what would happen. It worked fine. I have fed all kinds of ammo thru each of my Glocks, and they have eaten everything. Several thousand rounds, and not a single hiccup from any of them.

I shoot IDPA and many of the shooters use Glock 19 or 17s. No one that I talked with has ever experienced any problems. I’m sure the M&Ps are fine guns too.

I've certainly seen issues with Glocks - but they are typically related to ammo, magazines or technique, and can nearly always be corrected with some attention to mag springs, recoil springs, or ammo.

For the vast majority though, they are as you state - dead nuts reliable.

the nice thing is the rebate deal now going through April 1st. Buy an M&P and get 2 extra mags and a 50 dollar rebate.

I got the .40 and my wife got the 9mm.

I don’t believe the reliability issue was in the function, especially with a necked down case. I think that many of the high volume shooters were causing mechanical issues with the metal inserts in the polymer frame. It’s, as you know, a fairly snappy round. The only other Glock I can think of chambered in something of similar mojo is the 10mm, and I don’t think those, as a rule, see as much shooting volume.

NMSP tends to hire fairly husky individuals given the lack of backup they can expect, there are several 1 officer posts that cover close to 1000 square miles. They also are the ones that get sent into little towns when the local cops either all quit or are overwhelmed. They tend to like bombproof guns. They carried S&W 4506’s for a long time, a boat anchor yes, but plenty robust.

Of course, my opinion is suspect ‘cause I’m a big .38 Super fan. :)

How does the 40 compare to the 9 and the 10mm? I remember the 10 was quite powerful, it went through trees.

I can see a high round count with .357SIG causing more maintenance issues than might be acceptable to a department, motivating a switch to a heavier gun.

Yeah. When I pick up a Glock, I know it will go bang.

I will correct myself though to say that I have heard occassional complaints about failure to cycle, but that has never happened to me, even once.

biggest reliability issue with glocks is with “recycling” ammo, with chambering, unchambering, chambering, unchambering.. most autos don’t have a heavy crimp, so the bullet can seat itself deeper (eventually causing KB) or pull itself out (causing FTF).
also issues of reloads, if no done properly, they can also FTF.

Here's a few....the first I am very familiar with and there have been a couple from our County PD that I have seen. Granted while some have been with remanufactured or reloaded ammo, the two I know of for sure in this state were with new factory loaded PMC ammo. It has changed the view of the State and County PD's to look at the Smith(NMSPD) or Sig(BCSD) as replacements.

Dunno about the Glock, but Wolf 124gr (or maybe it's 115gr) 9mm does NOT cycle properly in my HiPower. In fact, it's the only thing said HiPower has refused to eat.

My wife purchased a 1000 rd box of Wolf in preparation for a self defense class in San Diego (2000). Her Sig 225 was full of tiny metal flakes after about 200 rds. It was jamming. I purchased some high quality 9mm brass and loaded up some 124 gr that perfectly cycled the Sig 225 for the remainder of her class. No problems with good quality ammo. We've been feeding the Wolf stuff to her Ruger PC9 rifle. It works fine there.
