America's Most Miserable Cities - (Detroit is Finally #1)
Forbes ^ | 1/31/08 | Kurt Badenhausen

Posted on 01/30/2008 6:20:16 AM PST by cowtowney

Imagine living in a city with the country's highest rate for violent crime and the second-highest unemployment rate. As an added kicker you need more Superfund dollars allocated to your city to clean up contaminated toxic waste sites than just about any other metro.

Unfortunately, this nightmare is a reality for the residents of Detroit. The Motor City grabs the top spot on Forbes' inaugural list of America's Most Miserable Cities.

And Detroit was rated as America’s #1 most liberal city - hmmmmm, is there a connection?

I live here and there is definately a connection. Our liberal, (but beautiful) governor has also given us a one state recession in Michigan. And today, our mayor is going to come out of seclusion to tell us about his sexcapades and lying under oath. Where else but in his church.

It took the communists about seven decades to destroy Eastern Europe. It took the communist unions about the same amount of time to destroy places like Detroit and Cleveland.

The irony is that even when the auto industry was making lots of money a decade ago and auto workers were earning paychecks that would be considered upper-middle class by almost any standards, the leftism of Detroit still made it undesirable.

Doesn’t Detroit have one of the highest Muslim population densities in the US? Coincidence?

I found it interesting that two of the top 10 cities were in California’s Central Valley.

Considering that I’ve heard some stories about how bad Fresno is leads me to ask “Is the Central Valley really that much of a hell hole?”

Anyone?

Poor Bloomberg: NYC came in fourth most miserable (taxes and long commutes).

The Muslims are in Dearborn, next to Detroit, and arguably saved it from Detroit’s fate. So, no, not a coincidence.

Sounds familiar, somehow.

Wife and I sailed up the Rouge on an Interlake steamer some years ago. When the cabby arrived to drive us to the airport, he was wearing a long, Philippine bolo knife strapped to his leg.
"Why the big knife?" I asked...
"The cops took my gun permit," was his reply.

Atlanta is much worse than Charlotte.

I never lived there, but there's not much professional work, lots of illegals, and a huge upswing in gang activity and crystal meth culture over the last 10-15 years.

Some Central Valley cities have become very dangerous places to live. Other, more rural areas don't differ much from the Midwest. Depends where you go.

The article says they looked at 150 cities, but only provide rankings — in a series of slideshow pictures, no less, in stead of a list — for ten. Where does one find the rankings for the other 140 cities?

Ow, that hurts. You may get to see more of her in the future. I’m hearing that there is a special place for her in a Hillary administration. Something to do with Economic Advisor.
