Carter Leads Moderate Baptist Meeting
Associated Press ^ | 1-30-08 | Associated Press

Weary of Southern Baptists' dominance in American Protestantism, a new push is starting by other Baptist groups aimed at working on social justice issues, and showing their religious tradition is broader than the conservative SBC. Former President Jimmy Carter is leading the effort.[snip]

Yet the biggest Baptist names at the event are prominent Democrats. Along with Carter, major speakers include former Vice President Al Gore and former President Bill Clinton, who has played a leading and provocative role in the presidential race of his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Republican Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa will also address the meeting. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Southern Baptist minister and GOP candidate for president, had agreed to participate, then canceled. Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina had been scheduled to speak, but instead will be campaigning with Republican presidential contender John McCain.

Communist goals have always been to subvert institutions from within. They have and are succeeding. I'm no expert but to me it seems the fundamental message of Christianity is based on how the individual should lead their lives. While the progressive "christians" eliminate individual responsibility and put it squarely on the state and government. I don't know but to me it sure seems that collectivism is the antithesis of Christianity making the term "A left wing Christian" a contradiction. This is one of the games the left plays, they take an abstract concept that has no real basis or truth and reifies it through language into what they claim is a concrete, a truth. Its one of the reasons you often hear the left claim "words have meaning" because to them truth created through language and not something that can discovered through rationality .

It bothers me how they interpret Luke 4:18. They see it as Jesus commissioning his followers to feed the poor, free the prisoners, etc., when that is to be done by sharing Christ, who then gives peace and freedom through His eternal hope. Several article mention Luke 4:18 being their "textual theme" for the meeting. http://www.csmonitor.com/2008/0130/p01s02-ussc.html http://www.ethicsdaily.com/static.cfm?mode=curricula_the_agenda

If you really want to feel nauseous, click on today's home page for ethicsdaily.com. Ethicsdaily is supported/funded by the CBF (Cooperative Baptist Fellowship), though they feel the need to keep their name secret.

The CBF (cooperative baptist fellowship) started less than 20 years ago, but their numbers are fake. They change existing SBC denominations by having the local church join both groups, and then send the majority of the funds to cbf (or split the funds between both groups), without telling the congregation. They then count those members in the SBC as their members. http://www.bpnews.net/bpnews.asp?ID=23779
I almost had a stroke when I realized 50% of my tithe was given to the liberals at the CBF.

They operate very covertly. Wonder why?

Actually, as a Baptist, I can tell you that there are substantive differences between the SBC and Cooperative Baptists. One of which involves women in ministry. The Baptist faith & message statement prohibits (or at least heavily discourages)women in ministry or deacon roles. That’s one reason my church became more moderate, plus we wanted autonomy in where our missions dollars were spent - not dictated by the SBC.

Step One: Form a Praise Band. Preferably with torn jeans and sandals.
Step Two: Stop talking about sin and judgement.
Step Three: Start talking about Social Justice.
Step Four: Get female clergy.
Step Five: Get gay clergy.

It has happened in most of the the mainstream denominations, following the same template. I’m suprised the Baptists held out this long.

The CBF, as with most liberal groups, cannot stop the move leftward. Here is an article (yes it is probably biased because it was published by the sbc, but can be confirmed, elsewhere). It is about the CBF women singing praises to Mother God at a conference in Atlanta a few years back.

..Carter never fails to amaze me at the lengths that he will go to, to feed his messiah complex...

Well, he is convinced that he is G-d. A socialist, bitter, and anti-semitic one.

Steps 2, 4, and 5 are outlined beautifully in Wayne Grudem's book "Evangelical Feminism and Biblical Truth." It is a predictable pattern. As we let man decide the answers, rather than God's word, we make up more and more, and use the Bible less, and less. Great book. It explained to me perfectly why the CBF'ers in my church were so desperately trying to push female deacons and ministers. And I mean "push." No kindness, 'peace,' or 'tolerance' involved in the process.

Honest upright Christians battling corruption and practicing real brotherhood and sisterhood are always in demand.

Thanks for the book reference - I'll pick it up.

I'm sorry that he missed step one, though. It really is important, in initially blurring the lines between the sacred and the profane.

I'm sure people will howl at me for saying it, but steps 2-5 follow step one every, single time, over the course of a few decades.

they abandon the Gospel in favor of chasing politically shifting winds.

I recall an admonition against building one's house on shifting sands.

Our CBF preacher’s favorite topics are peace (and we “pass the peace” in our Baptist church), peace, tolerance, peace, diversity, and peace. He is still in a coat and tie, though - it is all a guise. He is still fooling some of the little old ladies. I don’t know how the WWII vets sit there as he quotes Bonhoffer and retells the WWI Christmas Eve story where the sweet German troops sang Holy Night with the british troops. He also likes to tell us how racist the world is and how shameful slavery was. I think he must have been racist in the past and now feels guilt from it.

..I agree with the late Harold Lindsell’s assessment in “The Battle for the Bible” and Francis Schaeffer’s “The Great Evangelical Disaster”—departure from embracing plenary Divine inspiration of and authority of the Bible leads to this...

And aren't liberals always yelling "SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!" All of these politicians - speaking as 'Baptists' - two days before Super Tuesday.

When did this big government, man made global warming born again Christian shift happen?

Oh...it has been around for a long time.

It has just been recently re-introduced and made popular, again, through the Purpose Driven Life (Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, etc.) and also the emergent church (Brian McLaren, Tony Campolo, Jim Wallis and etc.).

..the BFM is very carefully stated (especially the newer one) and supplies the Biblical justification for every doctrinal position

The CBF always complains that it is about autonomy and political power within the SBC, but when you boil it down to gravy, it's about the authority of the Bible and its clear teachings--women in the clergy is one of many departures from orthodoxy...

Sounds like Jimmah Carter and friends wants to turn the Southern Baptists into United Methodists. As an evangelical Christian the United Methodist appear to have transformed themselves from a part of the body of Christ and into a PC social club. It would be tragic if the PC crowd takes captive the Southern Baptists, too.
