It was a routine e-mail from the boss sent to congratulate a junior prosecutor in Houston, Tex., who had won manslaughter convictions against an intoxicated driver.
"He convicted Mr. Sosa of a double intoxication manslaughter, got a weak jury to give him 12 years in each, and then convinced Judge Wallace to stack the sentences," Harris County assistant district attorney Mike Trent wrote in an office-wide memo. Then came the odd part: "He overcame a subversively good defence by Matt Hennessey that had some Canadians on the jury feeling sorry for the defendant and forced them to do the right thing."
The e-mail was sent in 2003 but came to light only this month as part of an unrelated controversy with his office, forcing Mr. Trent to defend himself against accusations of bigotry -- not because he offended the people of Canada, but because "Canadian" has apparently become a code word for blacks among American racists.

The bigger mystery is how "Canadian" came to be code for black. An online directory of racial slurs defines Canadian as a "masked replacement" for black.
Last August, a blogger in Cincinnati going by the name CincyBlurg reported that a black friend from the southeastern U.S. had recently discovered that she was being called a Canadian. "She overheard some of her customers complaining that they were always waited on by a Canadian at that place. She didn't understand what they were talking about and assumed they must be talking about someone else
"After this happened several times with different patrons, she mentioned it to one of her co-workers. He told her that Canadian' was the new derogatory term that racist Southerners were using to describe persons they would have previously referred to [with the N-word.]"

“Canadian” is far too offensive.
Please say “The C-word” from now on.
(Oh, wait a minute...)
This could get interesting for those of us who live near the US-Canada border...!
I always used “Canadian” as a derogatory epithet against ... Canadians.
H
“I’m not Canadian - heck, I’ve never even been to Canadia!”
“Canadian”?!?
I thought it was “Conserva -”...
Wait, hold it, I apologize, I never meant to - NO, NOT REHAB!!!
Nope, doesn't work.
Who the heck thinks up this asinine stuff? At this rate, we'll not be able to say anything, to anyone, ever.
OR, maybe that's that doubleplusgood goal.

Who you callin' a Canadian, mofo? I oughta sic my Pit on ya' and bust a cap in yo' a$$"
What else was new to me in the article is this.
Mr. Trent told Fox News that was not out of the question. "It would not be impossible or unusual for people from other countries to be on our juries," he said.
Since when can non-citizens serve on juries?
yitbos
This has been around in the restaurant business for years. It’s hard to stop, being that it would be hard to justify firing someone for saying “canadian” at work.
That is just weird.
This term has been used for years. Why? If you explicitly mention a black person’s race, you’ll get hassled by the PC libs or beaten up by offended blacks. But nobody cares what you say about Canadians.
I haven’t heard it used as a slur. It’s just a codeword.
Those Canadians are so well spoken...and clean.
I don’t know if it is universal, but many of my friends who are (or have been) waiters or waitresses use this code word while working. For some reason black people don’t tip well, but it’s not PC for the staff to complain about it. So instead of saying “tonight, none of my black customers left a tip” they would say “tonight, none of my canadian customers left a tip.”
The sad thing is, even the black waiters and waitresses call the black patrons canadians.
I have heard it used the same way. Just so someone doesn’t draw public attention by obviously mentioning race. I have never heard it used as a slur.
This is VERY true.
LOL!
Never know what you’ll find when you go digging through a woodshed.
This is all getting really dumb.
This is silly! What do we now call Canadians?.....We call them snowbirds.....

What about Toquie?
Odd... The last Canadians I spoke to were whiter than a photographic negative of the ace of spades.

It only takes an extra second to be courteous...

It only takes an extra second to be courteous...

It only takes an extra second to be courteous...
Some of my best Canadian friends are clean and articulate.
Now, which is the meaning of, “yitbos”?

Your Intuition Takes Balls Of Steel...
That's flippin' funny.
I have also heard the use of ‘Canadian’ to indicate a reflexive liberal relying on emotion and immune to logic and facts. It would fit the narrative in this instance though that’s not to say it has another connotation in the restaurant trade.
Incompetence on the part of the court can result in this.
This was my parting gift from the commonwealth. Right before i evacuated I served on a jury in a 1st degree murder trial. To make a long story short, we convicted the punk (not easy though, for a little while I thought we might end up deadlocked). Then right before sentencing we found out of my fellow jurors was in the country illegally, and the conviction was thrown out.
He wasn’t a Canadian though. Other direction.
(And nine to triple post.)
I'm just going to realize that they are stupid and want to hand them a sign.
Puck-Slapping Maple Suckers.
The sentence in the article right before the one you quoted answered your question.
They would have had to have been born in Canada and then became US citizens. I know a number of people that fit that description.
Thanks alot, Mike Trent!
Now we’re gonna have to go and distribute a new code word.
On, King! On you huskies!
I can name one, and most probably won't recognize him. Allan Slaight.
If I drink Canada Dry, and I am racist or not?
How about if I drink Canadian Club?
How about if I drink Canadian Club mixed with Canada Dry ginger ale?
Trent is either really stupid or he is a racist.
Either way, he should be fired.
How can one prove he was talking about the blacks? Yes, there were some blacks on there. There were also probably some women and men. Were there whites on the jury as well?
How about Tim Horton?
Yes, he played hockey.
But he also makes some great donuts. (Or, if you must, "doughnuts").
Plus, according to Wikipedia, Horton was a distant member of the Bush family.
I recall someone telling me some years ago that “Canadian” was being used a a code word for Blacks by waitresses, because both were lousy tippers in restaurants.
Based on your posts, it sounds like people are using these code words just because they don’t want people to know they’re talking about them. They’re not “slurs”. But they could be used to deny service, as one person here pointed out.
Glad to know this, btw. Now I’ll know what to listen for. ;-) I learn something new and useful here everyday. My husband, who is black, has always been aware of the stereotype, so he’s an excellent tipper. I, on the other hand, white/Italian descent, have been known to refuse to tip if the waiter/waitress has a bad attitude.

Take off, eh, hoser.
We do know that there were no Canadians on the jury. Therefore, he is so stupid he is unable to grasp the concept of “Canadian” or he is a racist.
