SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - Rudy Giuliani dropped out of the Republican presidential campaign on Wednesday and endorsed Sen. John McCain for the nomination.
Giuliani made the announcement at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library a day after suffering a debilitating defeat in Tuesday's Florida primary.
With McCain at his side, Giuliani said the nation needed "someone who can be trusted in times of crisis."
"Obviously I thought I was that person," the former New York mayor said. "The voters made another choice."
He noted that he and McCain had managed to compete without running negative ads against each other and said, "We will remain friends." He said he would campaign for McCain as much as the Arizona senator wanted.
Once the Republican front-runner, Giuliani finished a distant third to McCain and second-place finisher Mitt Romney. After the results, Republican officials had said Giuliani would endorse McCain, who also picked up an endorsement Wednesday from California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in advance of the public announcement.

That was a sweet speech he gave. He sounded like he was going to cry, either because he’s sad that he lost or because he really likes Johnny as much as he says he does. Hope he gets to be part of the cabinet if not VP.
Makes sense. A lib for a lib.
That's how I remember his statement anyway....BULLSH!!!!!!T RUDY!!!
Between the two of them, they could open up a franchise outlet, ‘RINOS ‘R US’.
God D**m Rudy! Go away now.
With an endorsement like that, McAmnesty could be in serious trouble. Anybody here think Julie brings anything to the dance that might be the teensiest beneficial? I don’t.
If he had spoken like that while campaigning, he might still be in it. I don’t think he want’s the VP job. He might be interested in the Attorney General job though, from what I have heard.
Why? Is Hillary going to appoint him?
McCain is going to be blown out of the water.
Sheesh can Fox news be anymore exuberent? They’re having a McCain-a-gasm. The sound went out during the Guliani endorsement and you would have thought Brit Hume was having a “heidi” movie flashback.
That’s not what any of the polls say, but I’m sure you know better.
Julie Annie stressed character in his endorsement, both his and McCain’s. Considering the Keating Five and Rudy’s endorsement of Kerik, Julie Annie came across very insincere, but that is not exactly news, is it?
Rudy’s sentimental, but sometimes his judgement is WAY off. Just look at Bernard Kerik.
He let’s his personal feelings influence his thinking.
If he had dropped out a weak ago with the same support, McCain would have had a majority yesterday instead of a plurality. What? Do you think Giullianni’s support will go to McRomney?
Matter of fact the fox news crews has lost so many bodily fluids today that they should all apear to be shriviling up like prunes.
And anyone should be surprised that a liberal in sheep's clothing would support a liberal is sheep's clothing?
As if John McCain is seriously going to be the next POTUS? Get real, Rudy Giuliani!
Tell ya what Rudy...We'll put you on speed dial to head FEMA. You did a much better job in NYC then the more recent FEMA directors have in other crisis situations.
Seemed to me he was more frustrated with the technical problems than anything else.
Actually, I get the sense that Hannity, and many other Giuliani supporters, are not all that fond of McCain.
Don’t be smarmy CG.
You know better than to quote polls as evidence here.
McCain will be beaten and I will back that up with money. At any rate come ping me come November and we shall see who is right.
Hanity has never impressed me. He tries... well my patience all to often.
Giuliani : “If only I’d kept my comb-over like you Johnnie....”
I’m glad that he did not endorse romney. I think Rudy and Huck are working together, despite their differences to make sure that Romney doesn’t go anywhere. Conservatives may curse them now but they will eventually see that it was for the good that Romney loses.
I had to turn off Hannity today because he was trying to justify going McCain because thats where the voters seemed to be going...or some crap like that.
Pretty bad when I'd rather listen to the Dr. Laura drama hour on the other station than Hannity.
Did you know that McCain’s own rich, well connected, second Father-In-Law introduced him to Keating?
He is going to get the nomination and right now he is +8% against Hillary.. so yea...
At the cost of getting McCain as the GOP nom. Yea I don't think so.
I supported Rudy. I will never vote for McCain under any circumstances.
Not only will I NOT vote for McCain, but I will also NOT vote for any Congressional or state and local Republicans as well. The GOP is dead people....
Haven’t heard the speech. Some quick pontifications, though, based just on the article and your comment:
1. This (concession) probably has been “in the works” for at least a week. “If we don’t get at least 2d in Florida, and you win there, I’ll throw it to you.”
2. Rudy might prefer to be Ambassador to the UN over Veep or other admin jobs. JMO; he seems strongly to prefer NYC environs to Washington.
I think a deal was made. Should McCain win the nomination Rudy will be his running mate.
You’re on, bill1952.
Yup. He'll try to out-do Hillary on amnesty promises to Hispanic voters, but it will be Bob Dole II.
there are worst things than mccain
Gosh...that seems...what's the word I'm looking for? Extreme!
Giuliani fan Dennis Miller has been pushing a Giuliani/McCain ticket the past week, so his Rudy followers are already primed for McCain.
Judy likes the shopping better in NYC.
The sky is falling!
A Social-Consevative should never endorse a lefty passing for a Republican.
It is all about kicking out those damn middle class religious types.
“What? Do you think Giulliannis support will go to McRomney?”
Heavens no, but I have serious doubts that a Julie Annie endorsement is going to help the Nutty Little Bastard in any venue anywhere.
The GOP's purpose is to be political backup for a poorly run DNC candidates run for government office any more.
It looks like another one of those years: hold the nose and pull the lever for the less demented of the bunch.
You have to see this....
“Sheesh can Fox news be anymore exuberent? Theyre having a McCain-a-gasm. The sound went out during the Guliani endorsement and you would have thought Brit Hume was having a heidi movie flashback”
LOL...I don’t even turn Fox on anymore - they’re part of the establishment. My news comes from the net and radio only.
