Senate Makes Fixes to Stimulus Bill, But Not Everyone is Happy

WASHINGTON — Members of the Senate Finance Committee passed a bill Wednesday they say will fix a loophole in the House-passed economic stimulus package that allows some illegal immigrants to qualify for tax rebate checks.

The fix requires that anyone eligible for a rebate envisioned in a House-passed $161 billion stimulus package must have to have a valid Social Security number, rather than an Individual Tax Identification Number.

The stimulus plan overwhelmingly passed the House on a suspended vote, meaning no amendments were included on the initial legislation. A mini-brushfire broke out in the Capitol Wednesday as members realized that the decision to refund tax payments to ITIN holders meant illegal immigrants could possibly benefit.

It's outrageous that illegals should even be considered in getting a rebate with tax money of US citizens.

Must have social security numbers to hire them, green card or not. I’ve seen 6 workers using the same SSN. So what’s the problem?

It’s ok, but my amendment would be that any tax payer with the first name of “Mark “ should get ten times the amount.

So if 20 illegals are using the same stolen SS number, only ONE check will be mailed to the real owner of the card. The illegals will get nothing.

With any kind of luck the 20 illegals would fight over the one single check. Not a bad idea!

The check will be mailed to the address on record at the SS office. That is not going to be the home of an illegal.

Thank God for Tancredo: “But Colorado Republican Rep. Tom Tancredo, one of the most-vocal anti-illegal immigration voices in Washington didn’t appear to take solace in Boehner’s argument or the Senate fix. In a letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Tancredo implored the Senate to “fix” the loophole”.

Why don’t they name the members of the Senate Finance Committee that voted for this. This is often done in these articles.

Names, I want names!

...House-passed economic stimulus package that allows some illegal immigrants to qualify for tax rebate checks.

This is not true! There is NO WAY our representatives would allow a bill to pass the house that would allow illegal aliens to get tax checks from the treasury! NO WAY, NO HOW!!

Yup Tancredo is one of the lone voices of reason on the immigration issue. Until we get rid of EVERY subsidy to illegals, we absolutely must do everything to send them packing.

Great....so if I get another one I know my SS number is being used illegally.

Let me see if I understand this:

1. Pork Barrel, earmarks = bad. ($35 billion)

2. Pork for votes = good ($165 billion)

3. Both borrowed from Arabs and Chinese

I’ve seen one guy using 3 different social security cards at the Texas Employment Center. He even got ushered in on a red carpet. There was only 1 social security card and no red carpet for the legal in America.

This actually happened over 10 years ago here in Houston and I will never forget it. Right in front of picture of Gov. George W. Bush.

This is no rebate. Let us call it what it is: money to be borrowed from the Chinese, to be paid back by our posterity, so that politicians can say they tried to do something while the economic house of cards they built comes crashing down around us.

Should the economy ever really crash, I’ll be able to eat and stay warm.

"So what's the problem"

Creating policy based on the possibility that illegals may-could-might benefit, but in reality the policy will definitely make legally working non-citizens ineligible.
