Posted on 01/30/2008 8:49:50 PM PST by PlainOleAmerican
Republicans had better rush to come to grips with the reality that all of our smart options for the 2008 election cycle are already off the table. Unlike past elections, Republicans actually had two very strong conservatives to unite behind in the 2008 primaries, Thompson and Hunter, and they failed to unite behind either of them.
The time to stand up for a true traditional conservative Republican has passed. The chance to do something smart no longer exists. Now we have one last shot and less than one week to do something that is at least half-smart.
John McCain is an Outright Liar
It is no less than Clintonesque to listen to John amnesty McCain call himself the official new leader of the conservative movement in America.
McCain is not being nominated by conservatives. He is being nominated by liberal Independents in open primaries and liberal RINOs in closed primaries. He has very little support among conservatives and he cant win in November as a result.
But more importantly, on the issues facing our nation today, John McCain is no more conservative or Republican than Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. In fact, after more than three decades in Washington DC, his friends are not Washington conservatives, but Washington liberals like Clinton, Obama, Kennedy, Lieberman, Graham and Martinez.

I’m rather upset with Mr. Conservative 101 (as I call him). When the best man in the race needed his support, he was as coy as Scarlet O’Hara. All so he could protect his “independence”. What a load of cow chips!
Now, the only other responsible person for the Republican nomination really needs his support and what does he do? He puts out this drivel and everybody jumps up and down and thinks it’s great.
Thanks for nothing, Rush.
I have voted for every Republican Presidential candidate since Reagan. I will not vote for McCain. This latest debate performance, sleazy robocalls, and last-minute dirty tricks sealed it for me--never mind his liberal positions.
I saw that video on HotAir the other day.
That explains everything that has happened, the GOP wants a Democrat to open the borders, grant amnesty, and initiate national healthcare. Then in 2012, once everyone is stuck with the crappy results, and taxed to death, they can say, We are the good guys, see what those Democrats did?
We are being majorly gamed. I don’t even trust the results from the primaries.
I have had it with the GOP.
Don’t forget that hero McLame and his good Veetnam war hero buddy John Effin Kerry tossed the POW/MIA families overboard so they could open trade with Charlie Manh.
Oh and McLame never met a banker (Charles Keating) who’s crooked bacon he wouldn’t join with a bunch of his democrat buddies (John Glenn, Cranston, DeConcini, and Reigle) to pull out of a fire for the right “contribution”. Campaign finance my @$$.
How did we get here? Too many fake conservatives stealing the oxygen from real conservatives; too much sleaze; too many lies.
I doubt that all the old farts in Florida would have voted as Rush would have asked. You give him too much credit. The American people, IMO, have been brainwashed by Liberal propaganda thanks to the MSM. Jimmah Carter days will certainly return and the mindless will get a dose of reality again. Only this time, we have enemies that want to destroy us. Playing games with our enemies will get us attacked worse than on 9/11. These mindless voters better pray that the attack isn’t in their neighborhoods and that they have their money under their mattresses as the economy tanks. Thanks to mindless moronic Liberals.
Or maybe you all are just blind to the fact that Romney is far more of typical political creature, one who can morph himself over the course of even just one campaign and fool you all into thinking that even a governor from Taxicusetts can be a true conservative. Maybe we should take a look at what Mitt-care is doing to the folks in that state and get real. Conservative my rear.
All the Romney supporters who were sliming Fred Thompson and his wife took it for granted that their savior, Mitt, was going to win the nomination...now, according to Jim Gerahgty at National Review, regarding delegates "That would put things at about McCain at 500+ (needing 1,191 to be the nominee), Romney at 325, Huckabee at 230 or so."
And the posters that are slamming McCain and praising Romney must not have seen this:
Many years of low unemployment and a low interest, too much information, everything has become American idol. Gives the rank and file time to fawn over vanity candidates and pet issues and causes.
When things go to crap, the kiddies will wake up in a panic and come crying for the help their pretty faces, flashy personalities, and marginal fanatics cold not provide. 2012, please hurry.
ROTFLOL ..... coming from YOU?!?!?!?!
Florida exit polls are very interesting:
Romney won pro-lifers.
Romney won the mainstream religious. (Huckabee won the very religious less than one-fifth of the pool.)
Romney won the Protestants.
Romney tied Huckabee with Evangelicals.
Romney won the pro-GWB voters.
Romney is the primary second choice of Giuliani voters, Thompson voters . and McCain voters.
Romney won the immigration hard-liners.
Romney won the upper-middle class, earning between $100,000 and $200,000 annually.
Romney won the terrorism-oriented voters.
Romney won the self-identified conservatives and the self-identified very conservative.
Romney won the values-oriented voters.
Romney won the white voters.
Romney won the tax-cutting voters.
In short, Mitt Romney won the Republican Partys idea of itself and that, too, is a big deal.
If youre white, Protestant, anti-abortion, go to church on Sundays, think well of the President, want lower taxes, hate terrorists, make a good living, want to do something about immigration, and live in Florida, chances are you voted Romney.
The question before Florida was whether McCain could win a closed Republican race, and now we know he can.
The question now is whether he can win conservatives and, in Florida, he did not.
YOU are out of step, RM.
Mclame will lose to Clinton just as Dole did.
Yes he is and I hope to see Mitt say so REAL soon!
It is done.
Pray to God that in the next four years the stupidity abates...
See #62. You are wrong. If the conservative vote is not split — Mitt can win.
He did well with the base in Florida as you noted, but we need great if not spectacular. In an era where national elections have been decided by a few thousand votes here and there, we cannot afford to have any of the main parts of the base stay home, and they will be, either because of Mitt’s history or, and it is sad to say, his religion when it comes to key areas of the south.
When it comes to the General, for Mitt the challenge would not be beating Obama or Hillary, but winning these key factions of the base.
Mitt’s appeal has blinded everyone to the facts, which is ok, but it left us hung out to dry. I saw it coming all along, the main focus on Romney was not his politics but his demeanor and looks, and oh yeah he’s a conservative also, I mean really, really he is. If not for his money he would have been an also ran a year ago. He bought and paid for just enough face time and advertising to sway "conservatives" and muddy the water, and now we will have to muck through the sewage for four years.
Please remember this lesson, I pray everyone does.
The critique is coming from me. The sleaze and lies tended to flow from Massachusetts and Arkansas.
Anybody paying attention for more than a media sound-bite does NOT need somebody else to tell them who to vote for, but yet the majority seems to hang on waiting in a suspended void to hear who the supposed somebodies endorse. It is just plain ridiculous for McCain supporters to claim he will govern differently than Hillary.... check out what she is doing to her own party.
Conservatism means individual responsibility not the reliance upon another human being for reality checks. No wonder these politicians do what they do, they have all the polling data in as to what they can say to which group.
Romney will have no trouble rallying the key factions of the base to vote against Obama or Hillary as indicated by the exit numbers in Florida. McCain will.
Additionallly, as we won with Reagan, we will win by appealing to conservative dems and conservative indies, not liberals and moderates.
Romney appeals to those kind of conservative Reagan democrat voters.
You are saying everything is different. The old rules don't apply. The Reagan coalition is dead.
Well, I don't believe it. And it doesn't have to be that way if we don't give up.
>>>>>Sorry to hear you are out of step with those of us described below and are supporting McCain. A vote against Romney is a vote for McCain.
People can support and vote for who they want. Just don't run around calling Willard Myth Romney a conservative. Romney is a liberal. I have no dog in this race and I never supported McCain, or Romney, or Huckabee, or Giuliani. My tagline makes that abundantly clear. I was a FredHead and remain loyal to my conservative principles. Also, exit polls are not to be trusted. They're notoriously wrong most of the time.
There are many FReepers unwilling to support any of the remaining GOP wannabes. That includes the founder of Free Republic, Jim Robinson. So, I'm in good company.
Its gonna be a long four years, but no matter who wins the nomination --- McCain, Romney or Huckabee --- conservatives are screwed. If Hillary or Obama wins, America is screwed. I'll be right here fighting all the liberals --- Democrat or Republican, just as I've been doing for the last 8-1/2 years!
There are HUGE differences between Mitt and McCain/Obama/Hillary. You really don't know their platform positions?
You may not think he is perfect. You may not even believe his is conservative, but Mitt is far better than any of those three and he promises to go to the WH with a platform of promoting issues which mirrors most of the issues important to Freepers.
McCain agrees with them (Hillary & Obama) NOT US (and Mitt) on global warming, immigration, amnesty, marriage amendment, embryonic stem cell research, lawyer lobbyists, big government, terrorists' rights, social security for illegals, Gitmo, waterboarding, judges etc.
Fixed it for you.
“I just do not get why you all are all over McCain like swarms of mosquitos at a nudist colony.”
Maybe if you actually knew McCain’s record as compared to Romney’s record, you wouldn’t need to wonder.
You're living in the outer limits of the twilight zone, on the road to Liberalville. You lied about me supporting McCain and than you have the audacity to say, my post makes no sense. LOL This is absurd. You RomneyMites have stretched reality in order to make Willard look as good as possible. Even trashing Reagan in the process. Sorry, that won't fly with this conservative. Your efforts are futile.
We all know McCain is maverick crazy and will make deals with Democrats to advance legislation that isn't consistent with the conservative agenda and Reaganism. Romney's politics are no better. He's taken every position possible, in order to appeal to every GOP contingent through lying and obfuscation.
Romney worked hand in hand with Massachusetts liberals to pass the first statewide health care program in the nation. Now he wants to do the same for America. Nationalized health care is what liberals propose, not conservatives! That one issue disqualifies Romney from any consideration to be the GOP nominee. You want more of the same, I've got it.
Next up --- Romney = ABORTIONIST!
Exactly. Once the primary season, after the candidates drop out one by one, it’ll be time to support the Pubbie nominees. After November there will be four (or eight) long years in which to whine on how the President is a RINO because he didn’t defeat al-Qaeda everywhere simultaneously without imposing a draft and while balancing the budget, put us back on the gold standard, drill for oil under the ACLU parking lot in Santa Barbara, build 1000 nuclear plants, outlaw abortion, and construct a full-length border wall against Mexico. :’D
This is not some game. This is the future of our country we are talking about. The choosing of those next SCOTUS judges being key. I have no doubt that the holier-than-thou purists can look in the mirror and thank themselves when Hill & Bill are sitting in our Oval Office again selecting the next Ginsburg (or McCain with the next O'Connor if he can squeak out a win by some miracle).
That’s the plan. The DNC had to have a divided conservative electorate to win and McCain is the man for that job, just as Rudy would have been. Together now, the fix is in.
The only way to derail the DNC/MSM fix is to derail McCain.
By JEBEE Kenji SOLIS
Who can beat the Endorsement of New York Times, Washington Post and the rest of the liberal MSM who endorse McCain?
Who can beat someone like McCain who was endorsed by Americas Mayor Rudy Giuliani, endorsed by Arnold Terminator Schwarzenegger, Joe Lieberman, Crist and Martinez, and almost all of the Democrat or liberal-leaning people in America?
Who can beat him, when Huckabee -- a nuisance candidate who will take voters from Mitt Romney -- refuses to quit the race to ensure a win for McCain?
In the words of Michael Gramm of National Reviews The Corner:
So it is over. Finished. In November, we'll be sending out our most liberal, least trustworthy candidate to take on Hillary Clintonperhaps not more liberal than Barack Obama, but certainly far less trustworthy.
The worst part for the Right is that McCain will have won the nomination while ignoring, insulting and, as of this weekend, shamelessly lying about conservatives and conservatism.
You think he supported amnesty six months ago? You think he was squishy on tax cuts and judicial nominees before? Wait until he has the power to anger every conservative in America, and feel good about it.
Every day, he dreams of a world filled with happy Democrats and insulted Republicans. And he is, thanks to Florida, the presidential nominee of the Republican Party.
I have heard from and received emails from several people -- some Republican, some conservatives -- young and mature people, some adept in politics and some just read the news or watched it. But I am surprised, when they admitted, if McCain will win the nomination, they will vote for Obama. Even my wife is considering voting for Obama if McCain gets nominated.
When the National Review endorsed Governor Romney, they were correct when they declared ""[Giuliani] and Mike Huckabee would pull apart the coalition from opposite ends: Giuliani alienating the social conservatives, and Huckabee the economic (and foreign-policy) conservatives" and McCain, all of the conservatives.
Who can stop him? Who can beat him? Hillary Clinton will, and most importantly and most decisively, Obama will, on first account, his age; he is too old to be President. Second are his principles.
I still and hope and believe he can be stopped not for Mitt Romney. The Governor is too kind and too decent engage McCain, or anyone like McCain, in dirty games.
In the long run, it is We, the People who can beat McCain. They can stop him from being President, who will take America down the path of recession, war, division and degeneration.
I am not making prophecy here, I am telling the truth. Mitt Romney is the instrument for Americans as their alternative choice, not perfect but a teachable man, a person who worked hard and gained riches (the American Dream!), yet humble enough to consider those who are unfortunate; a leader who leads by words and examples; a father who loves his sons as a loving American; a husband devoted to and who loves his wife just like every husband in America should. Mitt Romney is an ordinary American who lives an extraordinary life, and who dreams to share that extraordinary life with his fellow Americans.
Americans are the freest people on earth. And if you want to see, feel, hear and see the difference, spend some time in Saudi Arabia, and youll wish youd never left the United States of America.
Use your freedom wisely. Vote for freedom. Vote for Mitt. Romney.
McCain will never get my vote either. I’m sorry but that is a message I need to send to the RNC, etc. I would rather vote for Hitlary than McCain, have the country go down the toilet and then, maybe then... we can get a Republican candidate that will truly represent conservative values.
Sad, very sad. I will see who the Independent candidates will be and perhaps choose from there.
Mitt has to step it up now!
He can use hard FACTS. He doesn’t need personal attacks. If he hits McStain hard on the FACTS, lil’ John will light up like a Christmas tree and the lil’ tyrant will expose himself.
Romney lies and you RomneyMites lie --- about everything. The choices left to conservatives are rotten and that has left some Republicans running scared, thinking Willard is the answer. Willard is actually part of the problem.
>>>>>If you don't vote for Mitt it is effectively a vote for McCain's nomination.
BULL! There is no effective difference between Willard and JohnnyMac. Neither man represents conservatism and both would lead the GOP in leftward fashion, much like Bush43 has.
A vote for Romney is a vote for moderatism and liberalism.
A vote for McCain is a vote for moderatism and liberalism.
Both candidates need to be kicked to the gutter. ASAP!
I know I’m in the minority when I say this, but I really have a hard time listing to Rush. I heard him and he was refreshing in the early 90s, but he is conservativism 101. He has no big ideas nor original ones. If you’re new to politics, then he’s the best guy one could listen to, but after a cursory education, you have to move on.
I much prefer Walter Williams or even better Sowell to rush when they fill in.
And we’re not talking about his tireless self-agrandizing. Sure, it’s an acknowledged shtik, but holy moly, it gets old. Real old.
So, for those of us who don’t hang on his every word and don’t listen to his show every day, it would be really helpful if he said at some point, “I’m supporting for Candidate X because he is the best candidate for these reasons:...”
Now some more truth about Willard the Myth.
Back in 2005, Romney was calling the McCain-Kennedy-Bush comprehensive immigration reform package that included amnesty, "reasonable proposals". Since that time Romney has unbelievably morphed into a Tancredo clone. In 1994 Romney was trying to run to the left of Fat Ted Kennedy on the abortion issue. He says he had an epiphany in 2005 and now calls himself pro-life. His continued support for the federal assault weapons ban is an outrage. When he said he was a lifetime hunter and supported the NRA his entire life, that was BS. He joined the NRA in 2006! LOL And lets not forget his advancing gay rights while leading a liberal state that has elected Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, election cycle after election cycle, decade after decade.
Romney's only real accomplishment as Governor of Massachusetts was to propose the first ever statewide health care program in America. Romney wants the federal government to take over 1/7th of the US economy by shoving a version of his RomneyCare down the throats of the American people. Mandates, subsidies and regulations aren't what the US health care system needs. That is the first step on the road to socialized medicine.
Romney has a lousy track record on most issues. An unconservative track record. People like you who have chosen to blindly follow him, are engaging in a cult following. Nothing conservative or constitutional about cultism.
Keep it up. Good job. McCain, Hillary and Obama thank you.
You’re posts are without substance.
I oppose Romney, McCain, Huckabee, Obama and Hillary.
Not a conservative in the bunch.
As Ann Coulter has repeatedly said about Romney, “I don’t care if someone flip-flops as long as they flop my way.”
Frankly, Ann Coulter has her head firmly up her own wazoo. Ann Coulter cares about whats best for Ann Coulter’s career. Nothing more, nothing less.
Your posts are so full of....substance and John, Hillary and Barack thank you. Let’s leave it at that.
Don’t argue! He knows best. ;-)
You’re right...let’s go shopping!
I’m with you!
Look, all points given I want Mitt to succeed, I really do, and while his Conservative bonafides leave me a little disheartened, I think he will at least make an effort for the cause.
But that is not the issue.
The problem is not the centers of the base but the sides. There are many core conservatives and many evangelical/religious voters, especially in the South, that will not vote for Romney ether because of his weak Conservative credentials or because of his religion. These folks will stay at home.
When it comes to his religion, well I have already been called a bigot on that today, which is funny as hell since I went out of the way to make it clear that was never a factor for me, but reality is reality. Huck is doing well in Alabama, Georgia and the like because of it, and Mitt’s weak numbers in Florida were in part due to that factor as well.
The core Conservatives will also stay home because his Record, not his rhetoric, is weak on those things they value.
Now what numbers are we looking at, maybe 4-8% of the normal base, the ones who elected GWB both times. Take 4-8% out of the 2000 and 2004 elections and we would have lost.
So this has nothing to do with moderates, and very little to do with Reagan Democrats, who to be honest will be a problem for us if it is Obama, but not if it is Hillary. Mitt can appeal to those if he is in the General, but they were with us in 2000 and 2006 also for the most part. This has everything to do with key voting blocks that are normally slam dunks for these candidates.
