Mom, Fiancee Say They Didn't Give 11-Month-Old Booze

Police Say Boy Ingested Enough Alcohol To Be Legally Drunk

MUNCIE, Ind. -- A mother and her fiancée said in jailhouse interviews Monday night that they don't know how her 11-month-old boy might have consumed alcohol, which led to their arrests.

Investigators said the boy, Korbin, drank enough alcohol to become legally drunk, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported.

The baby's mother, Amanda Elbert (pictured, left), 19, and her fiancée, Edward Williams (pictured, right), 29, were at an apartment when the boy drank alcohol, according to police. Williams told police he was drinking beer and a friend of his was drinking whiskey, but that no one saw the boy ingest alcohol.

The child's father picked him up at the apartment and noticed that he was unresponsive, authorities said. He brought the boy to Anderson Community Hospital, where doctors tested his blood.

Authorities said the boy's blood-alcohol level was 0.118 percent, above the legal limit to drive, which is 0.08 percent.

Elbert said she has never done anything to hurt her child.

"I've had my baby for 11 months and he's never even fallen and gotten a bruise," Elbert said. "I'm very protective of my son. He's never been sick, never been to the hospital."

Williams disputed that the child had consumed alcohol at the apartment.

"I hate what happened to the baby and I hate the situation that I'm in," Williams said. "I'm telling the truth. The baby didn't leave with no alcohol in the system like that. The baby was fine, walking, pretty little baby. Everybody loved him."

The boy is staying with his father while his ex-wife, now pregnant with her second child, and her fiancée sit in jail.

The two will face a judge on neglect charges on Tuesday.

The baby was the designated driver?

Maybe the dad got him drunk to get custody?

For all their likely faults, I'll give 'em the benefit of the doubt on this one. Kids will emulate adults, and that's probably what happened here.

One of my very early memories is when I was no more than about 2 or 3, and getting hold of a glass of scotch and soda. Well, I figured that having the stuff meant I was a grownup, and I wandered around sipping the nasty stuff.... I drank quite a bit of it before one of the adults noticed it.

I didn't get schnockered, but I did have a nice nap afterwards.

They should have never let the kid drive their car.

Luckily, he did not kill anyone.

They’re guilty of something whether they actually gave it to him to drink or he drank it accidentally. (I find it hard to believe an 11 month old would ‘sneak’ that much alcohol. They wouldn’t like the taste.)

That’s possible. Of course, it’s also possible, though hard to comprehend, that the fiance (who isn’t the father) let the baby have some alcohol, maybe to put him to sleep while he partied (?). Sadly, I had a relative who would drink with his friends and give alcohol to his young son, just so they could laugh at him stumbling around drunk. That was 40-some years ago, though.

Occam's razor says that the kid got hold of it himself, and drank himself silly. The fault of the adults would lie in leaving the booze accessible, and not keeping a close eye on the kid. I'd even venture to guess that the adults were soused at the time, which was probably a contributor to their negligence.

That's bad enough, but it's not the same as feeding booze to the kid.

I just reread the article. I doubt, too, that they would’ve gotten him drunk on purpose knowing the father was on his way.

Because an eleven month old is so small, we are talking about a tiny amount of alcohol to get their blood alcohol to that level. It's not like an adult that has to drink a considerable amount of alcohol to get that drunk.

One little kid sized drink of whiskey would likely be more than enough.

The kid could have also gotten into the hand sanitizer. Most parents don't realize that it is 42% alcohol, and there have been a number of cases of kids ingesting it and getting very intoxicated.

These parents may have tried the old method of giving a little kid a nip of whiskey to quiet them down, or the kid may very well have taken a drink out of one of their glasses or gotten into something else.

It's hard to tell with the limited information we have. I just wanted to point out that we aren't talking about the kid drinking a couple mixed drinks.

I hope you’re not including whiskey-on-the-gums while teething in “feeding booze to the kid.” Not having children, I don’t know if that’s still in fashion, but it’s a time-honored treatment that I’d certainly use if I did.

Well, at least the kid wasn't driving. It'd be a shame for him to have a DUI on his record at his age ;-)

Boyfriend was feeding the kid liquor for a joke.

I agree, the skeptic in me says that maybe the father (who pick the kid up) got the kid drunk and is blaming it on his ex-wife.

It's a good thing the baby wasn't driving then. I wonder how much alcohol an 11-month old boy has to drink to get a blood-alcohol level of 0.08%.

How does an 11-month old become “legally” drunk?
