Journalists are taught never to "bury the lead." Yet it looks as if that's precisely what CBS's "60 Minutes" did in reporter Scott Pelley's fascinating interview Sunday with George Piro, the FBI agent who debriefed Saddam Hussein following his capture in December 2003.

Mr. Piro: “The folks that he needed to reconstitute his program are still there.”
Mr. Pelley: “And that was his intention?”
Mr. Piro: “Yes.”
Mr. Pelley: “What weapons of mass destruction did he intend to pursue again once he had the opportunity?”
Mr. Piro: “He wanted to pursue all of WMD. So he wanted to reconstitute his entire WMD program.”
Mr. Pelley: “Chemical, biological, even nuclear.”
Mr. Piro: “Yes.”
One reply..............????
“Mr. Pelley: Chemical, biological, even nuclear.
Would have been a lot of web talk had he succeeded!
The unspoken reason of the Iraq war is somewhat illuded to in this story. The Persion Gulf War, no fly zones and the embargo was weakening Iraq. Saddam knew this so he kept the WMD pretense going to keep Iran at bay. The US also knew that Iraq was weak and soon would not be able to control the Iranian backed Shia element. (Shia almost took out Saddam in 1992, but the US did not have the no fly zone.) The benefit of the Iraq War is containment of Iran, something Saddam was no longer capable of doing.
D’oh. I usually check, but forgot to this time.
So much for Bush Lied.
There you go, giving away the store secrets again. It is in this light that Gulf War II should be viewed.
“The benefit of the Iraq War is containment of Iran, something Saddam was no longer capable of doing.”
such a concept, IF truly accurate, was made necessary by the “realists” (Scowcroft, et al) who succeeded in preventing us from going to baghdad in 1991
they gave the iranian mullahs, their intel networks and special ops another ten years to radicalize the iraqi shia before the fall of saddam
I knew from the start that Bush was not lying....I suspect most of you knew it too.
Bingo! I always tell any moonbats within listening distance to consult a map:
Iraq? Check.
Afghanistan? Check.
Kuwait, Qatar, UAE? Check.
Oman? Check.
Turkmenistan? Check.
Azerbaijan? Check.
It’s an articleof religious faith with liberals that “Bush lied” so they’ll never admit to any of this, even though it was on their program, “60 Minutes.”
Interesting series of 3 days of interviews here by David Cerullo with Former Iraqi General George Sada, who is a Christian....the only Christian who was on Sadddam’s war board and who was an advisor to Saddam who survived....and who has written a book about Saddam’s reign.
He calls what American has done as “liberation” of Iraq~!

He declares of course there were WMD’s under Saddam and explains how Saddam had their two passenger jets transformed into cargo carriers and flew out his WMD’s over to Syria in the guise of taking humanitarian aid to Syria when its large dam collapsed (with help) and flooded Syria’s province around that dam. Saddam also sent convoys of 16 wheelers to Syria during that time with same.
Just listen - very interesting.
No, the only sensible point of Iraq was as a stepping stone to Iran, the source of most terror since 1979. What we have accomplished in Iraq was not worth the price if Iran does not fall.
And don't get me started on Saudi Arabia.
The interview is stunning. He was zooming the camera over the area for grins and giggles and caught the caravan. Interesting to say the least.
Nice analysis. Everything else is bs. Saddam’s generals, and even Saddam himself admitted this to the military and US interrogators.
Saddam wanted to project that he had WMDs to keep Iran at bay. He never thought the US would invade, which was precisely why we invaded. containing Iran was a secondary benefit. The true logic behind going to war was to show this part of the world we were willing to “come and get you”.
Of course liberals destroyed any positive effect we created with their treasonous anti-war political smear campaign. If we could deport the liberals, we could be living in paradise. I will be glad to trade them for conservative Mexicans.
I think we did intend on going to Iran. You can think the yellow bellied liberals for putting a stop to our goals. They did more than Iran could ever do to stop us from stopping them.
yes the interview is stunning. This General’s book should be sent to every Congressman/Senator.
My opinion of the strategic importance of Iraq would have been different had I known there would be no follow up. It is as though after D-Day, the Allies grabbed a piece of Normandy and stayed put, instead of chasing the enemy back to its homeland. You always keep pushing the enemy, even if, in this war, the enemy is not arrayed in formations in front of you.
I think you make good points. More than 1/2 the people in the USA apparently don’t want to recognize the fact we are at war. Until we do, you are correct. We took a beach head and are simply holding it while taking fire. Damn FUBAR if you know what i mean.
