If I remember correctly from the National Geographic article on Marco Polo, “Taklamakan” translates more or less as “Go in and you don’t come out.”

It’s like a spring day when temperature goes from 20F to 70F in 6 hrs. Make you feel sick.

It is. However, it is dry with little precipitation. You know, nothing but whipping wind and dust.

Go in and you dont come out.
Yes, you are correct.

“record snowfall in recent five years “
So prior to that they’ve had more snow?

The observatory in question is probably in operation for only five years.

The sand covered in snow reminded me of the comment one of my sons made when he played on a beach for the first time at around age 4, “It’s like hot snow!”

Hey need to get the sand sculptures out there...
Snow and Sand Castles.

That happens here too. The 58 FWY that goes through the Mohave desert was closed over a week ago because of snow. You can play with snowmobiles in deserts!
