The Elephant In the Immigration Room
American Thinker ^ | February 03, 2008 | Lee Cary

The ignored elephant in the immigration debate is the negative impact of illegal immigration on job opportunities for unskilled, uneducated, native-born U.S. workers -- particularly young African-Americans, but also native-born Hispanics. In their Hollywood debate, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton refused to admit immigration "hits poor and minorities hardest" as the cliché goes.

While some proponents of a liberal immigration policy admit to anecdotal evidence of the elephant's existence, they typically discount a causal relationship between employed illegal immigrants and unemployed citizens.

Granted, it's hard to document employers hiring illegal immigrants over legal applicants; after all, it's against the law. But it's not necessary to film it happening to know that it is. Statistics tell the story.

First, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, from December 2006 - December 2007 unemployment among Hispanics (legal workers assumed since why would illegals participate in a census?) rose from 5.0 to 6.3%. The number for unemployed African-Americans increased from 7.9 to 9.0%.

Second, the U.S. government may be vastly underestimating the number of illegal laborers in the work force. In January 2005, Bear Sterns Asset Management, Inc. released a report entitled "The Underground Labor Force Is Rising To The Surface," that states:

"The number of illegal immigrants in the United States may be as high as 20 million people, more than double the official 9 million people estimated by the Census Bureau.

Undocumented immigrants are gaining a larger share of the job market, and hold approximately 12 to 15 million jobs in the United States - 8% of the employed.

Third, native born Hispanics are not faring as well in the job market as foreign-born Latinos. A report from the Pew Hispanic Center entitled "Latino Labor Report 2006: Strong Gains in Employment," separates foreign-born Latinos and native-born Hispanics.

So once more it’s all about money.........has nothing to do with what is right or wrong. Take the money out of the picture and see where you are.

Lee Cary should have gone further than the now outdated Jan. 2005 Bear Stearns Report (using 2004 data) quoting 20 million illegals. It is 2008, for gosh sakes!! At 3 million breaking in per year (10,000 per day it is estimated at), that’s 32 million-plus illegals in the U.S. Instead, Cary should have had the sense to quote the most recent and I believe accurate study on “numbers” of illegals by CAPS at

http://www.capsweb.org/content.php?id=242&menu_id=8

from October 2007. They estimated the number to be between 20 and 38 million. And that was 4 long months ago! Figure on over 40 million by election day this year...

If we granted amnesty the newly minted Z’s would try to get higher wages..and a new wave of illegals would follow undercutting them.
Without border enforcement and internal enforcement we are doomed to become a Third World country with masses of uneducated underpayed servants and the rich living in gated communities. Gradually the middle class will be hollowed out as more jobs slip into marginal pay.

...and 40 million is more than 10% of the population of the U.S.!! And you don’t have to live in CA to see that this is the case...7 to 8 million in L.A. County, alone! 15 to 17 million in CA alone! If Americans don’t wake up and demand that the Feds shut down the Border, we as DOOMED!!

Any takers on those borders being “secure” January 22nd of 2008?

History has shown that in most cases like this sooner are later the peasants will be marching in the streets with the rich hanging from the street lamps.

A vote for Mcain is a vote for Ted, Pelosi, Ried, Kerry,Hillary, Obama,Specter and lets also include Guliani, Arnold and the rest of the America for sale morons that we have elected to protect and serve the AMERICAN PEOPLE! When oh when are we going to stand up and be counted. We are at a cross road that is moving toward the America we once knew. An America that is dependent, an America that is looking for the government for sustenance, an America that has lost its will and dignity.

“on job opportunities for unskilled, uneducated, native-born U.S. workers — particularly young African-Americans, but also native-born Hispanics”

And that’s the dirty truth of the matter.

Does anyone care to guess why Maine, Montana, Wyoming, and Wisconsin have the best school performance in the country?

Our collective cultures have some major deficiencies along the way. And when you start to see the Brittany-Paris Hilton culture spreading, it’s little wonder that Europe and Asia kick the immortal junk out of us in terms of school performance.

Having lived in Europe for a bit, it became evident that their high school graduates were a good year and a half ahead of ours. Granted, I think our universities are better and certainly require more work. But it’s a major failing of our school systems, who seem bound and determined to teach to the lowest common denominator.

"The number of illegal immigrants in the United States may be as high as 20 million people, more than double the official 9 million people estimated by the Census Bureau.

I believe that this number is seriously understated as well, simply because of the impact on society.

I recently had to reprogram the radio stations on my car stereo. I counted 4 spanish language stations on the AM dial alone. The "mexican" section in the local grocery store has been expanded over and over again. In my Aunt's neighborhood, the grocery store now sells to a mostly hispanic customer base. Last year they had a kosher section. It's now gone, replaced by latin specialties.

"...native born Hispanics are not faring as well in the job market as foreign-born Latinos

Native born Hispanics are legal citizens and expect the legal minimum wage, observance of employment laws and the usual wage dependent benefits.

Large employers of illegals hire them because they work for less than the legal minimum or the going rate for a particular job.
And illegals are reluctant to report employers who cut other corners on employment laws.

This points out the fallacy and idiocy of the Shamnesty law.

Once illegals become legal they will expect higher wages and benefits so employers will just recruit another generation of illegals who will work for less.
Then we will end up with several more millions of newly minted "legal" Hispanics who will join the unemployment lines.

But as long as they vote for the politicians who pander to them everyone will be happy except for the hardworking taxpayer and the people who lose their jobs to the next generation of illegals.

If we granted amnesty the newly minted Z’s would try to get higher wages..and a new wave of illegals would follow undercutting them

And the newly minted Z-visa holders would be able to sponsor at least 66 million more LEGAL immigrants thru chain migration, i.e., family reunification and that is predicated on there being only 12 million illegals here.

Immigration will be taken off the table in the general election if McCain is the nominee. And you can bet that there will be a tidal wave of illegals who will try to get here before amnesty is passed. As soon as McCain is known to be the Rep nominee, the land rush will start because then it doesn't matter who the nominee is for the Dems. Both parties will pass amnesty. All of this will start before there is any security at the border.

so, 70+ % of all the people in LA County are ILLEGAL ALIENS? And 40-50% of ALL THE PEOPLE IN CALIFORNIA?? Get a grip.

And, per a later post, 4 radio stations and a big taco section are not evidence. I'm perfecly willing to believe that there is a serious problem, and that numbers can be argued -- but simply taking the last previous number, and adding to it, which leads to the next poster saying "it's bigger than that" -- which leads to the next . . . .

It's a serious Q, but it requires serious inquiry.

Ha!
Hire a landscaper for any major, minor, or recurring work and see who shows up.
Hire a housecleaning service and see who shows up.
Move into a new neighborhood, where construction is still going on around you and listen to the chatter, or the music.

We don’t need any government numbers to tell you what’s going on.
