Internet problems continue with fourth cable break (Quatar)
arabianbusiness.com ^ | 02/03/08 | Dylan Bowman and AFP

Posted on 02/03/2008 12:09:50 PM PST by maclay

Internet services in Qatar have been seriously disrupted because of damage to an undersea telecoms cable linking the Gulf state to the UAE, the fourth such incident in less than a week.

Qatar Telecom (Qtel) said on Sunday the cable was damaged between the Qatari island of Haloul and the UAE island of Das on Friday.

The cause of damage is not yet known, but ArabianBusiness.com has been told unofficially the problem is related to the power system and not the result of a ship's anchor cutting the cable, as is thought to be the case in the other three incidents.

Wow, number four...I posted a story yesterday about number three. I wager Iranian Internet is very silent. Iran must be scrambling today.

With the countries involved, I might lean more toward Islamic terrorism. I can see cutting the cable to Iran or Syria. It’s hard for me to see us cutting the cable to the more moderate states. Who knows though? Perhaps there’s good reason.

All I know is, there is something definately at foot...

Sounds fishy.

Who would want to take out their cables?

Or is the list too long.

Al Queda trying to prevent western influences into the Middle East could be a culprit. There aren’t that many boat anchors in this short a time causing these problems.

Good post.

What amazes me is the utter lack of attention this story is getting from American press. But, with Britney Spears in a psych ward, media resources are understandably stretched.

How would you like to be the business that owns the cables? You go to your insurance company to recoup the money you lost and they tell you about the rider in the contract that prevents them from paying you due to damages incurred by acts of intelligence agencies.
