DENVER -- No one can agree on what exactly happened the day a Colorado man spotted Dick Cheney strolling the streets of a ski resort town and decided to give the vice president a piece of his mind.
Steve Howards, 55, says he walked up to Cheney and delivered his message -- "Your policies in Iraq are disgusting" -- then lightly touched the vice president's shoulder.
The White House photographer says he saw Howards slap Cheney on the back.
Cheney's personal aide remembers Howards placing his hand on Cheney's arm and shaking his hand.
As for the Secret Service agents who arrested Howards on suspicion of assault: two say he lightly clapped Cheney on the shoulder; one demonstrated it as a shove; a fourth said Howards reached over several small children and struck Cheney.
Since the agents -- now accusing one another of changing their stories and lying about what happened -- can't agree, Cheney should give his own version, Howards said.

How did he get that close to the VP in the first place?......
I’ll bet if Cheney was hunting, he would’ve kept his distance!
It’s the LA times and I would take their characterizations of what the witnesses said with a major grain of salt.
They should just go out to the hunting lodge and settle it over a beer. ;~))
Try the whole salt lick!
"Well, I was just about to reach for my shotgun, and the damned Secret Service agents took this guy away...."
Seriously, how could anyone get that close to the Veep?
P.S. I'm REALLY looking forward to whatever book the V.P. decides to write. I rather doubt that he'll pull any punches.
Dick Cheney - "Well, lets go hunting next week and we'll talk about it."
“How did he get that close to the VP in the first place?......
It sounds like someone really messed up. This loon could have had a weapon.
Heh, heh!
I was wondering the same thing.
Maybe Bob Knight can go for good measure. If Cheney doesn’t shoot him, Coach Knight will.
I agree. How did this idiot get close enough to touch him (regardless of whether it was a slap, a shove, etc) and now the guy is obviously angling for a lawsuit. Had he been tasered, he’d be angling for a lawsuit against the “jack-booted thugs”. Let the whiney bastard yell at Cheney from a dozen yards away- don’t allow him close enough to touch the second most powerful man on the planet...
All three.
I respect Cheney immensely, and think he does have a strong policy voice in the White House. But by saying that the policy in Iraq is Cheney’s policy, Howard is self-identifying as a lefty moron. This notion that Bush is Cheney’s puppet, and that Cheney pulls all the strings in the White House, is standard fair over at Kook Central.
I don't care if they call it an assasination attempt. You don't walk up to the Vice-President of the U.S. and lay your hand on him.
bingo question....
Colorado hippies... hate everyone.
Yes.
lol

Whatever.. I live in same town as Bob Knight.. that shooting story was way over blown. Knight was hunting birds not shooting at the 15 fame minute dude.
If you touch a Vice-President at all unless it’s to touch his hand in a rope line, don’t come to me seeking sympathy for whatever follows. Whether it’s Cheney or Gore, you just don’t touch the Vice-Presidents.
What follows is of your own doing.
Sub 60 I.Q. alert!
The shocking part is that some clown could put his hand on the Vice President in any way. Somebody should be in trouble for this.
lol
Good thing he didn’t get hit with an ash tray.
Yes, I’d say keep one’s distance from Prez or Vice Prez, especially, unless invited to shake hands. The Secret Service has a job to do and it must be respected.
If I remember correctly this nutcase was bragging about telling off Cheney. Now, like the good liberal he is he is suing someone.
He had better be glad it wasn’t Bill Clinton. He would still be in jail (or worse).
******
Steven Howards is suing the Secret Service. Or, at least, one of its agents.
******
Howards recalls having touched Cheney’s suit, then walked away with his eight year old son in tow. As he headed off to meet his wife a secret service agent approached him an asked if he had assaulted the Vice President. Howard replied that if free speech was assault then arrest me. He was arrested and while being pushed into a Secret Service vehicle, his wife had arrived and asked where he was being taken, she was not given an answer. Howards was charged with federal assault. That was reduced to state harassment three hours later when his wife paid the $500 bail.
Howards is suing the Secret Service for harassment.
Bingo.
It was battery. Battery is nothing more than an a touching that was unconsented to.
You’ve got your kid in toe and do this? What a loon.
You’re right. This guy gets my dumb move of month award.
I guess this is all about a lawsuit. Someone looking to get rich off the Government.
ROFL...love that one!
Precisely.
Howard’s attorney is David Lane, same one who represented Ward Churchill. That’s what stinks.
The continuing effort to debase this good man. i am sick of it. You included, Letterman.
What a f**cking whiner! Reminds me of that scene in "Waiting for Guffma," when Corky says "You're just bastard people and I'm going home to bite my pillow!" What a f**ktard!
Move that trial to Savannah and please let me be on the jury!! I’ll find for the Secret Service guys, and fine the loon $5,000,000 for being really stupid, and fine his lawyer the same amount for hanging around really stupid folks! Just think, taking out two pompous asses at the same time.....
Make that “Waiting for GuffMAN.”
Typical, stupid liberal. All emotion and zeal, he resorts to meaningless whining about his disgust. He had a real chance to have a meaningful converstation with one of the most powerful men in the world and the best he can come up with is "Your policies are disgusting." What a loser.
Knight is a much more frightening hunting partner, that’s for sure.
Yes, politicians are so far above us commoners.
Probably looks something like this:
I think our policy in Iraq is great. Who the Hell does this Steve guy think he is?
A hippie around Cheney is a lot safer than a woman around Bill Clinton.
