Tired of snow? Brace yourself.

We're in bull's-eye, expert says

Winter-weary Wisconsinites could rightly grouse about La Niña, or complain about devilish upper-level air patterns, as they prepare for yet another snowstorm, one predicted to pile another 10 inches on already snowbound areas.

Push some of that stuff down to western Virginia. We haven’t had a decent snow in three or four years.

Here in North-central Illinois we may dodge the brunt of it. We may be headed back into the weather patterns of 25-30 years ago. So much for GW (except to those invested in its success).

I switched schedules today with my boss. She drives in from Columbus and is a total 'Nervous Nelly' about driving in snow...even with her SUV, LOL!

I'm doing the state a favor by keeping her off the road as much as possible these next few days.

It's actually bright and sunny here this morning...but a big change is coming. ;)

I am taking a night class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I can count on one hand the number of nights where there wasn’t considerable snowfall/sleet or ice to deal with. Makes for a VERY long night! I don’t even need to look at the forecast anymore-if it’s Tuesday—it’s snowing

Send some to SW Colorado, too. We're going skiing in three weeks......6"-8" of fresh powder would be very nice.....

You're right - we've been spoiled for a very long time. I tell my kids that we NEVER saw the grass from Oct or Nov all the way through April.

The one thing that's been fortunate this year is we've had a significant melt after each big snow.

Nice thought but, if you'd been living here for the past few decades, you'd know it's been many, many years since we've had a season of snowfall like this one.

We'd already shoveled what seemed like an entire season's worth by the end of December.

Here in Washington our mountains are at 150% - 200% of normal, with another 50 inches expected by the end of the week. I have never seen anything like it. We are talking 20 feet of snow with 30 foot drifts at the snoqualmie pass ski area. Many cabins and cars cannot be seen because they are under the snow.

We're stuck here as long as our parents are still around. However, I tell my girls to PLEASE consider moving somewhere warmer.

MGD always says he'd love a word or two with his ancestors who settled here--He imagined them saying, "Ach! It's yust like da olt country!"

To which he would have replied -"Yeah, the old country SUCKED--that's why you left it!!!"

The last memorable snowfall was 78-79, IIRc. Every weekend for 4-5 weeks we’d leave work, stop and buy groceries, then stay home. I lived in a 2-story condo at the time and could only see the neighbor’s unit (25’ away) from my second-story window. There was a single path shoveled out between units through 10’ high drifts so we could get to our front doors.

They ran out of room in mall parking lots to pile the snow and had to begin hauling it away. People drove with flags & stuff hanging from their antennas & CB radio masts so they’d be seen at intersections because of the piles of snow. You even had to watch for large piles of snow along the roads because they could contain buried vehicles. Toward the end, when they began getting highways cleared, I decided to visit my Mom in SE Wisconsin, just to get out of the house. I was on Hwy 23 North going toward Harvard, IL and hit a stretch of 5 miles where there was only one lane, with 12-15’ drifts both sides. Fortunately, I meet a vehicle going South until I was out of the single-lane section. Now, that was a winter! We haven’t seen anything remotely like it since. This year, which pales in comparison, is the closest I can remember. I do believe, however, there was a year in the late 80’s that had some heavy snow, but we were out of state then.

One of my co-workers also drives in from Columbus, and likes to brag about his 4wd vehicle. He found out a couple of weeks ago that 4wd is worthless on ice! Hit an ice patch near the Diesel Driving School just outside of Sun Prairie. Now he’s driving a rental car until he works out the insurance details and gets it fixed! :-)

And ours gave out after 17 years. Now the stores only have top-on-the-line blowers on the floor for mega bucks. I can't shovel because of heart problems and the wife has arthritis. But a couple neighbors are helping out. We're going to get another blower at the end of the season.

Tired of hearing about the midwest and east coast winter. My home in Idaho has four feet of snow in the yard...shoveled roofs....cannot see out the windows. Rest of the nation gets weather coverage....not the pacific northwest. Brian Williams (gasp) even got a letter from someone in the northwest last week. Here, the storms come and go...we accept winter and can deal with it.

We buy a 6 pack of Heineken for the neighbor next door. He has a plow on the front of his pickup and does our driveway. He says we don't have to do that, but we are happy to. The one two doors down who blows the sidewalk wants banana bread. So be it!

LOL! Shortly after my parents moved to MO several years ago, they had a snowstorm. Dad & youngest brother rushed out, all bundled for a Wisconsin-style winter, and started shoveling. They said all the neighbors were driving by, pointing and laughing. They found out that the prevailing attitude was: “The good Lord put it there, the good Lord can take it away!” And, by noon, it had all melted away.

Same here about Tuesday’s.

Tuesday is garbage day for us and we’re last on the route, so the recyclables sit out all day and get buried or soaked EVERY Tuesday. We’re always dragging those cans and containers through the slop.

Perfectly normal so far here in the SF Bay Area. We are at about 115% of normal rainfall for the season which is great news. HUGE snowpack in Sierra. Rained all last week, but cleared yesterday. High about 55, low about 35. More storms headed our way, too. Couldn’t be more normal.

He, he. We're 30 miles South of Rockford in Rochelle and heard the same. But Accuweather shows the system going North, with us on its South end. And they predict rain from noon to around 4 p.m. with cloudy conditions after. So, who knows?

We're going to plan for the worst. The wife will arrive home (works in DeKalb) around five. We'll go vote, then to the store to stock up. She's off for the next few days so we won't have to deal with driving. Good luck!
