Problem involves nonpartisan crossovers for president
Fearing a "Florida in Los Angeles County" fiasco over the confusing "double bubble" voter ballot, officials said Tuesday they are concerned a ballot design flaw could prevent hundreds of thousands of nonpartisan votes for president from counting.
Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo called on Secretary of State Debra Bowen and acting Registrar-Recorder Dean Logan to review the county's unique and potentially confusing ballot.
"It would be unfortunate if nonpartisan voters, confused by the county's unique `double bubble' ballot design, did not have their vote counted," Delgadillo said.
Secretary of State's Office spokeswoman Nicole Winger said her office also had received calls about the issue and was investigating.
Nonpartisan voters registered as "decline to state" who chose to cross over to the American Independent or Democratic party ballots had to mark the party box at the top of the ballot along with their choice for president for the vote to count.
"I don't think it's a widespread problem," Drugan said. "Is it going on? Are some voters confused? Yes, they are. Is it widespread or systemic? I don't think that it is."
But Kim Alexander, president of the California Voter Foundation, said the issue could affect a large number of votes because more than 20 percent of the county's nearly 4 million registered voters are listed as "decline to state." "This could potentially impact hundreds of thousands of ballots," Alexander said. "There could be legal challenges."
More than 750,000 nonpartisan voters live in Los Angeles County. If a chunk of these voters were disenfranchised, Alexander said, it could alter the statewide presidential primary results.

No one thought to bring this up prior to election day?
Did registered democrats have to blacken teh special bubble too? I think they must have unless there is a special crossover ballot.
If so, then what’s the problem?
If you get a ballot, and the bubble is not filled, how do you know it was a crossover ballot?
And the republican ballot has no such thing.

Wasn’t Dean Logan involved in the mess here in King County in WA in 2004?
I’m wondering what the city-wide vote in LA was...because Obama should have taken at least fifty percent...as some local political analysts had figured last week.
So presumably the indys who voted in the Dem primary would have leaned strongly towards Obama?
Because of a lack of background checks, former elections managers Bob Roegner and Bruce said they had no inkling of Dean's and Elder's criminal backgrounds. Dean Logan, named elections director last year, said he learned of their convictions when election activists Bev Harris and Andy Stephenson revealed the information in December.

Thousands of Republican voters in San Diego and as far north as Los Angeles showed up to vote on Tuesday only to be told that they were registered "Non-Partisan". This meant that they could not vote for the Republican Primary candidates.

Several people have called in saying they witnessed this happening at polling place they worked at as volunteers. One gentleman stated that he believed at least 20% of the Republicans that showed up to vote were denied a Republican primary form because the roster showed them as "Non-Partisan".

They never do. This stuff happens every election with a promise that “it’ll be fixed before the next election”. Uh huh.
Who is the genius that came up with the double-bubble idea and is he/she still on the payroll - and if so, why?
He did such a good job with all those found ballots for Christine, that's all LA needed to know to seal the deal for him.

As an independent, it was easy to see the first line at the top was required to be marked. If they couldn’t figure that out then they are too dumb to vote. I voted Obama to stop hillary. I’ll vote against either of them in the general!
They did. The press mentioned it in news coverage. Did people listen? No. Do voters have any responsibility for their vote? After Fl 2000? No. Is this pathetic? Yes.

That wasn’t just SoCal. It happened in the Bay Area too. It happened to me, but not the other two people who live at my address. Brian Sussman on KSFO was talking about it, since it happened to so many people up here.

It was a closed primary for Republicans in California. No Independents could vote on the Pubbie side--it was a separate ballot.
