Skip to comments.McCain, Romney in Dustup Over Dole

Former Sen. Bob Dole, the failed Republican presidential candidate in 1996, became the focus Tuesday of an increasingly testy exchange between GOP presidential contenders John McCain and Mitt Romney.
The tit-for-tat began with Dole coming to the aid of McCain, a fellow war hero and former Senate colleague, in a letter to conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh. He has relentlessly criticized the front-running Arizona senator as insufficiently conservative.

BTW, who would take political advice from Bob Dole?
McCain doesn’t know when to quit even when he’s ahead.
McCain, Romney, and Hucklebee can all get applicable advice from Bob Dole. Bob dole's run was doomed before the primaries were over, because due to his record a fatal percentage of the conservative base refused to vote for him on election day. This also applies to all three of the aforementioned individuals, and they can all use Bob Doles sage advice on how to console yourself after an unsuccessful run.
Just calm down, John.
Dole should have kept his mouth shut. He was a decent statesman, but he is the reason Clinton got a second term, the term that Bin Laden declared his fatwas against us & cooked up the 9/11 attacks with KSM.
What does KSM mean?
It’s a waste of time. Huckabee and Romney might have been able to compete with the Dems. He will lose. He just isn’t able to connect.
Nice kicker at the end
Dole looked so LOST and MENTALLY SLOW on Hannity and Colmes that night.
He had been used.
He could not even answer who had released the letter to Rush. Later he seemed to remember something and said, “yes, they released it after 3 PM so that Rush could not use it on the air.” He realized what he said and could not recover with an answer over who released it!
Sean realized he was looking a fool and let the questioning change direction. IMHO
Khalid Sheik Mohammed?
I remember when Bob Dole was the nominee and I had this sinking feeling. He was hardly the best candidate. Now we’re in another mess, only worse! How did John McCain get this far? It is absolutely mindboggling. Go, MItt!
an uninformed electorate.....
Khalid Sheik Mohammed (9/11 mastermind)
We have a best qualified candidate in Mitt to come along in many years, but the Party seems determined to commit suicide. Reagan didn’t catch the first time around either. Can you imagine picking Ford over Reagan? McCain over Romney is a magnitude worse in my opinion.
My poor husband can’t believe his GOP is doing this - turning their backs on Mitt Romney in favor of a known anti conservative zealot. It is unbelievable. If Huckabee were half a man, which apparently he is not, he’d drop out. He looks heinously evil for staying in for the express purpose of hurting Mitt Romney. Creepy beyond belief. Even John Edwards has more character.
Anyway, go, Mitt!
Our side kept saying we what we did NOT want. We all should have gotten together early and decided what we DID want and who fit that best.
Now anybody looks better than Mccain. We will not hold control of either two of the four sectors of government for at least 6 years.
Note I said 4 sectors. As Bush found out at every turn of the last 8 years the administrative branch is as powerful as the other three.
In many ways MORE powerful. Other branches work on laws passed by people we elect. The admin can make their own laws called rules and findings and are administrative law.
Previous dem presidents had loaded up all the administrative offices with dem hacks. State, FBI, EPA, Labor, ATF, FTC, FDA,Justice, CIA, Treasury, etc, etc are all loaded and basically run by dems.
Nothing was done in the last 8 years to change that. Even Bush did not fire political appointees and left them in place.
That was one of the stupidest moves. As many of the administrative folk are now permanent government employees.
I am convinced that we are in this dilemma because of Mormonophobia. The bigotry, that gave support to the Huckabee candidacy, took evangelical conservative votes away from Romney.
