With Romney's pull-out (suspension, anyway), and barring huge unforeseen events, the GOP Pres nomination will go to McCain.
I didn't see any prior threads devoted to discussing a range of VP options. (I did see some suggesting particular people, like Condi Rice.)
As I see it, McCain SHOULD want to address three factors with his VP pick, although the 3d is far behind the first 2:
1. Ideological Balance. Someone to McCain's right on those issues where McCain is left, such as Amnesty, Gore-Bal Warming, Judges.
2. Relative Youth. McCain's age is a factor, making his VP pick more important than such picks usually are: McCain is much more likely than most presidents to become incapacitated, just as an actuarial matter.
3. A Popular Figure in a Swing State. Although this isn't as important, I note that there is little *geographic* benefit to picking, say, Gov. Perry of TX, because TX is going to go GOP anyway.
Thoughts?
If this better belongs in Chat, so be it!
FRED
John Q. Kerry
Blunt is the only conservative I can think of in a swing state. Mark Sanford would be a good pick to make nice with conservatives I think . . .
Dick Cheney :)
Fred
Michael Steele.
Feingold, Kennedy or Lieberman.
How about one of his buddies John Kerry or Ted Kennedy? No, they’re probably too old and too close to McCain ideologically.
Alice Gore would make a great VP for McCain, they think alike!
My personal choice would be Duncan Hunter, but that does not make the most electoral sense for McCain. Aside from McCain and Hunter both being from the same region, selecting Huckabee would shore up McCain’s support with southern evangelicals, whereas I’m not sure many of them even know who Hunter is.
He should pick someone who has no real future in the party since Obama is going to hand him his head in the general election. Whoever runs as McCain’s second will be a footnote. I’m thinking Huckabee.
Lindsey Grahamnesty
If McCain picks a conservative (i.e. Thompson) and leaves office 2012 (McCain already suggested that he would be able to only serve on term), things might look not so bleak.
It’s deciding now who will be his running mate. I hope and guess it will be a solid conservative. If it’s Huck, Graham or a similar RINO, forget about it.
In McCain’s world he figures to please conservatives by picking ‘light shoes’ Graham.
Alaska governor Sarah Palin, the anti-Hillary in every way.
Ron Paul!
McCain’s VP should be Tom Tancredo...but on the condition that McCain resigns one minute after he’s sworn in.
That will narrow the field down to, oh, about 40,000,000 conservatives or so.
Even someone like Fred might not be enough to put earrings on McCain's hog.
I say Obama gets the Dem nomination. In a stroke of genius, to unite the country and initiate real change, McCain take Hillary on as his VP. McCain is easily elected, takes the oath of office, and tragically dies as the motorcade enters the White House grounds.
That lines Mitt up for 2012 as the front runner.
He’ll pick either Hillary or Obama in the name of “consensus building” with Congress.
I predict it will be Huckabee. Huckbee’s delegates give a proven voting base.
It won’t be Mitt because there was too much bad blood between McCain and Mitt anyways.
Go ahead, John. Follow your heart. Pick Rudy.
Expose yourself for the crooked liberal you really are.
I don’t care because I am not voting for McCain.
I predict Lieberman.
Fred was my first choice for President, and I cannot rule him out as a VP pick. But picking Fred has at least two big “costs,” as I see it:
1. Age. I predict that every lede in the MSM would point out that the men’s combined age (136) is the oldest of any “ticket” in history, which it is.
2. Fred wouldn’t help much in the geographic sense. The GOP already has to win most of the previously-Red southern states, and I’m not sure Fred helps in some of the “swing” ones. I hope I’m proven wrong ... !
McCain claims to be a strait talking conservative.
Bolton is one.
If McCain is smart, it will be Thompson.
Help him in the south, bring in some conservatives.
But, he’ll probably choose Joe Biden.
George Soros. He put up his $$.

Well, he certainly brings relative youth! Heh.
It would end the primary process immediately, and would save McCain's finances for the general election
Al Gore
Beelzebub. He already sold his soul to the devil.
Beelzebub
I was a Fredhead, but I always thought the best man for the #2 spot would be J.C. Watts. He isn’t a senator, he’s impeccably conservative and still young, and he left Congress before Cunningham and Foley, so he cannot be tarred with any of those scandals. Even though he played for the hated Sooners I say this.
Remember that the one place McCain is conservative is in the area of life. This election has grave implications for millions of unborn children, so I will hold my nose and punch that hole.
McCain is going to need big help in swing states in the South:
Louisiana. Florida. Tennessee. Virginia. Arkansas. Missouri and West Virginia, too.
Romney. He needs someone who’s youthful, conservative, and has lots of money.
He’s going to pick Huckabee and I’m going to vote for the Democratic candidate with balls enough to admit he’s/she’s a democrat rather than these two Democrats in Republican dresses.
Romney......he carries the votes with him and would make a great President when McCain kicks off. Send the bible thumping Huckster down the road. Nothing wrong with religion but don’s bring it to the race.
Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter, Dan Qualye :)
BUMP !!!
