The world's first time machine? Tunnel to the past could open door to future within three months, say Russians
Last updated at 14:07?? on 07.02.08
Time travel could be a reality within just three months, Russian mathematicians have claimed.
They believe an experiment nuclear scientists plan to carry out in underground tunnels in Geneva in May could create a rift in the fabric of the universe.

Life imitating art? Actors Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd in the movie Back to the Future. Scientists say that time travel could be a reality in just three months
The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) hopes its "atom-smashing" tests - which aim to recreate the conditions in the first billionth of a second after the "Big Bang'" created everything - will shed invaluable light on the origins of the universe.
But Irina Aref'eva and Igor Volovich, of Moscow's Steklov Mathematical Institute, say the energy produced by forcing tiny particles to collide at close to the speed of light could open the door to visitors from the future.
According to Einstein's general theory of relativity, any large amounts of matter or energy will distort the space and time that surrounds it.
If the energy or mass is large enough, it is claimed that time can be distorted so much that it folds back on itself - creating a wormhole, or time tunnel, between the present and the future.
But Dr Brian Cox, a member of CERN and one of Britain's leading experts in particle physics, is highly sceptical about the Russian claims, calling them "nothing more than a good science fiction story".
Wormhole: Scientists plan to carry out tests in underground tunnels in Geneva in May which could create a rift in the fabric of the universe
He said: "Cosmic ray collisions in the upper atmosphere are far more energetic than anything we can produce.
"They have been occurring for five billion years, and no time travellers have appeared.
"Stephen Hawking has suggested that any future theory of quantum gravity will probably close this possibility off, not least because the universe usually proceeds in a sane way, and time travel into the past isn't sane."
Cynics often point out that if time travel was really possible, we would have been visited by people from the future.
However, Einstein's laws of physics suggest that time travel is only possible into the past as far as the point when the first time machine was invented.
The world’s first time machine?
Can we go back and help Fred !
I guess sending a Terminator back for McCain would be viewed as unkind?
That's Joe Einstein, science fiction writer.
Nothing will help Fred.
This was already posted tomorrow.
3 months from now it will be the future!
“When this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re going to see some serious sh#t.”
I’ll tell you fine people how to acquire time travel technology right now with what I call ‘perpetual processing’ (no kidding):
First, we begin with what one could call “perpetual funding”, a funding action from the Congress that once signed into law cannot be revoked, modified or diverted in any way from it’s original purpose and will be automatically renewed and continued forever, for as long as there exists a United States Government. (that ought to be a lead pipe cinch for ANY Congress, lol)
Now after setting up the perpetual funding, the funds are allocated to the construction of an absolutely secure facility (think ‘Super-Cheyenne-Mountain’) which based upon it’s location and construction, is more than likely to survive at least as long as the pyramids of Egypt.
Inside those secure facilities will be the most advanced and reliable computer systems known to our technology, they will run 24 hours a day, with continuous backups and parallel systems which will insure that at no time, can there be a system crash without an immediate recovery via any number of redundant systems. As technology advances, additional systems are brought online, and older systems are retired, with the sole exception being what I call ‘System Zero’, i.e., the first system to go online when the facility is completed and activated.
Inside System Zero are encrypted instructions which cannot be altered, and the ‘prime directive’ so to speak, which will be passed down from generation to generation for as long as it takes, is simple:
When an effective and practical time travel methodology is developed and proven reliable, the next instruction is to transmit that information all the way back to System Zero, and provide that technology to the original crew that turns the key to begin the whole ‘perpetual processing’ cycle.
If the survival of the funding, the facility and the systems can be assured, the technology for time travel should show up within about 60 seconds or less after initializing ‘System Zero’.
Enjoy your weekend!
Can I go back and not marry my ex?
I’ve always said that when time traveling, don’t go too far back into the past. You don’t want to check out the caveman days and suddenly have the batteries go dead.......
It will be good to see CERN up and running. We need some new physics discoveries to keep technological development progressing.
I think its already been done, they went into the future saw it was bad to make this technology possible to eveyone and are right now removing all information to achieve it so it will never happen.
This will be old and forgotten in a week or two.
Will this be a Windows operating system?
What will be old and forgotten?
Just don’t kick the baby dinosaurs.
Oh! To be able to go back in time and buy IBM for $1.00 per share!
Fixed! Oh, and time travel into the future has always been possible and occurs routinely. It's traveling into the past that's a problem.
Foolishness. Time travel is impossible.
I thought Berkshire would be better.
Wow. That comment was pulled right off the page of DU.
This is a little game the scientists play to garner more funding from government.
They will no doubt do the experiment, and make the grandiose claim that they succeeded in causing a particle to travel backward in time. But no one will be able to explain how it happened, or how they know they succeeded.
I thought McCain was pulled right off the pages of DU!
How do they know we haven't?......
There is no likelihood that man can ever tap the power of the atom. The glib supposition of utilizing atomic energy when our coal has run out is a completely unscientific Utopian dream, a childish bug-a-boo.

,,,and deleted yesterday by the poeople who posted it tomorrow.
I keep seeing this same story on FR again, and again, and again. It gets posted tomorrow and I delete it yesterday and it keeps coming back around tomorrow.
So how did it work?
Oh, Time Machines are like Welfare programs?......Yeah, you do the same thing over and over and over again until you go nuts.......
If there’s a time machine that could travel to the past, and it’s supposed to be tested three months from now, wouldn’t we have heard about it already? Or would folks have stopped their work if they thought it had already been done, and there fore it would never have happened in the second place because they saw it in the first place?
Stop me before I paradox again.
Can I be first?
I’d do something a bit more important than that...
