Top lawyer faces money-laundering charges

Ben Kuehne, a widely respected Miami lawyer whose clients have included former Vice President Al Gore and other major politicians, surrendered Thursday on federal criminal charges for his behind-the-scenes role in a complex international drug-trafficking case.

An indictment, unsealed at his morning court appearance, charges Kuehne in a money-laundering conspiracy with approving tainted legal payments by an accused Colombian drug kingpin to his defense attorney in Miami.

The fee payments turned out to be illegitimate because they allegedly came from drug proceeds in violation of federal law, federal prosecutors said.

Kuehne, appearing in Miami federal court at 10 a.m., said: ``Since I am completely innocent of these charges, I am entering a plea of not guilty.''

Two co-defendants, Gloria Florez Velez and Oscar Saldarriaga Ochoa, were also named in the indictment. They, too, pleaded not guilty.

Lawyers need to be very careful about vouching for money sources in drug cases. Indeed, this says the average lawyer should probably stay away from even doing such an investigation.

The defense is he is above the law. Money laundering in payment of legal fees is ordinary and necessary or a druggie would never be able to obtain legal representation.

It is but another of tyrannies of lawyers.

Isn’t there such a thing as enough money? I’m sure he did very well in legal ways, why did he have to do that?

It is times like these that reinforce my wishful thinking that one day, one or both Clintons will get tripped up and face the gavel!!!

I understand completely about Baldwin. I can’t watch MASH any more and a bunch more programs I used to enjoy because the muddleheaded, liberal, leftist actors started to think they were more important then they were started mouthing off. It’s a shame. It’s as though I am agreeing with them if I watch their stuff. Call me crazy but that’s the fact.

Hey the only reason I know the name of that show anyway is cuz NBC runs a lot of commercials to keep their “Smash hit” in front of enough sheeple to tune it in out of sheer boredom.I guess?

Most people will either harp on the fact that Ben Kuehne worked for Gore or that he's simply a lawyer.

But people in the Miami legal community, liberal AND conservative, all know that Ben has way too much integrity for this kind of thing.

Something stinks here.

W_K: As a lawyer - I keep waiting for the point where federal laws an regulations wrap around on themselves to create a perfect storm of penalties, prohibitions and sanctions within which it impossible to NOT be in violation of the law.

Prescience?

See the 3rd Amendment.

You mean the one between the Second and the Fourth? Quartering soldiers? You lost me.

The Founders got REALLY bent (#3's worth bent) about the King sticking armed government representatives into the citizenry's homes to suck up their provender and monitor their speech and associations.

Well, OUR "government" has done the Brits one better: The serfs are required to pay "property taxes" and "income taxes" to put the armed government representatives up in style - nice salaries, health care, housing, pensions, etc.

Then, they have carte blanche to monitor our speech and associations (ref. Ben Kuehne) on OUR dime.

I imagine that Ben Kuehne has involuntarily kicked in quite a chunk of change to fund his tormentors.

You'll find that most of the enforcement arm of the federal government is a mssaive violation of the 3rd Amendment.

The Founders simply didn't outlay that kind of cash to keep the Kettenhunde warm and fed.
