SPRINGDALE - The medical community is warning the public: a leprosy outbreak in Springdale could blossom into an epidemic, if something isn't done soon.

Doctors say at least nine cases of leprosy have been confirmed in Springdale. Local doctors say they would be shocked by even one case of leprosy in their entire career...

Don’t forget to add in increases in polio, TB, and whooping cough too.

Yup. We’re getting people who have never had their shots overrunning our borders and they’re bringing back all the “old” diseases.

Didn’t folks wanting to immigrate have to be quarantined for a period of time? (The memory’s beginning to go, you know, LOL.)

BGHater posted this on the other thread:

In 1986, a compact was created between the United States and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The compact granted the Marshall Islands — the site of numerous nuclear tests between 1947 and 1962 — its sovereignty and allowed the U.S. to continue maintaining a missile test site at the Kwajalein Atoll.

The compact also allows citizens of the Marshall Islands to live and work in the United States without being subject to U.S. immigration laws, but they are ineligible for Medicare, non-emergency Medicaid, Social Security, food stamps, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and most other forms of federally-funded public assistance.

Diseases such as tuberculosis and leprosy are alarmingly common among Marshallese immigrants, yet many are unable to afford treatment, according to Pritchard.

“Very often they do not come in for some help until the disease has (caused) very serious physical symptoms and is very far advanced,” he said. “So you can imagine the time bomb that we’re sitting on here with ... 6,000-8,000 folks freely traveling in and out of this country and in and out of the state, that when we have an outbreak of serious disease, it is going to be a state health problem.”

Deputy State Health Officer Dr. Joe Bates testified that between 2000 and 2005, Northwest Arkansas had nine cases of congenital syphilis, six of which involved Marshallese; 38 people with infectious syphilis, 21 of whom were Marshallese; and eight cases of leprosy, all Marshallese.

Bates said the rate of leprosy in the Marshall Islands is the highest in the world, yet no survey has been done to determine the extent of the disease in among Marshallese immigrants in Arkansas.

Thanks for the link, I'm glad its legal immigration.

I would prefer the immigration to be conducted as it was 100 years ago. All immigrants are checked out by a doctor at the border or dock and the doctor decides if they go further or go into quarantine.

The current Monty Hall method of immigration "Come on down!" is not the safest for a variety of reasons.

People wanting to immigrate had to have their vaccines in place 6 moths to one year before they could actually come. It was dependent upon what region of the world where they were coming from and certain know disease problems in that region. Also, verifiable physicals were required for those known diseases, etc. to include STD's, polio, etc.

Our misgoverned try to enforce this for the legal immigrants. That's why people have to wait after they apply, not only disease checks / inoculations have to take place, but criminal checks too. Then their name goes into the lottery hat each quarter as to a yea or nay after the requirements and fees have been fulfilled. If you are Hispanic, you simple flip off the system and walk or swim in with your disease and criminal record and then get free money.

From the article:Bingham says she is all for Marshallese people entering the United States, after proper medical tests. But whether they're immigrants or not, she says people must stick to treatment, when infected. And she says, when she treats those from the Marshall Islands, this doesn't happen. "We're not getting the compliance that is absolutely essential to take care of this process."

Bingham says without cooperation, leprosy, which has no vaccine, and is transmitted through the air, will spread, and could easily become an epidemic. "People absolutely should be concerned. What I'm afraid of, is when people start thinking about it enough, it will already be out of control."

So now, Bingham, and others like Mayoral candidate Nancy Jenkins, say government help is the next step. Jenkins says she's angered the federal government has been so lax with border patrol. She says, "We've just opened the borders and said, 'Come on in! Bring your diseases! Bring 'em!' Why are we doing that? Those who have it need to be quarantined and treated, or sent back to their country."

ping....
