I believe the Canal Zone was considered American territory, similar to embassy and military personnel. Heck, one of my kids was born in Germany on an American base, and there has never been an issue with their citizenship. I don’t care for McCain either, but this is a non-issue, otherwise you’d better start going after lots of military brats.

Absolutely. HE WAS BORN OF AMERICAN PARENTS.

If you have American parents and just happen to be born overseas, you are still a NATURAL BORN AMERICAN !!!

He’e eligible. You can be born outside the country as long as your parents are US citizens.

Thousands of military “brats” are born out of country each year.

Natural born does not equal geographically born within the physical boundaries of the USA; it includes children of US citizens born abroad.

The Canal Zone was, at the time, sovereign US territory. I believe several US presidents were born in territories that were not yet States at the time of their birth. This is pretty much the same situation.

He is a natural born citizen. If one of your parents is a citizen, you could be born on the moon and still be a US citizen at birth.

I do however wish you were right.

If you are born in a US embassy in a foreign country, you should be considered a US citizen since that portion of land is US owned and protected.
Would the same not apply to Quantanomo, Cuba or in that case the Panama Canal Zone?

What if neither parent is a citizen and their child is born in the USA, an anchor baby.

Can that baby become president when it turns 35?

Seems like kinda an unnatural born citizen.

The constitution says “a natural born citizen”.

Anyone born to american citizens on american soil is automatically a US citizen, and thus “natural born”. Military bases, embassies, and such are considered american soil regardless if they are actually physically within the boundaries of the US or not. The panama canal zone was american soil until jimmy carter gave it away in the seventies.

Therefore, mccain is a natural born citizen and eligible to be POTUS. Any baby born to US service persons while stationed overseas on american military bases are considered “natural born” as well.

Hey..., but for a few weeks..., I'd have been born in the Canal Zone too! Until "Jimmah" gave it away, it was U.S. Territory!

The Democrats have an answer to that question which may or may not be the correct answer, and they will supply that answer less than a week before the election just as in the 2000 election when they let everyone know that when the young George Bush got a load on he often took his sister out for a drive.

"Bobby Jindal, the governor of Louisiana, could be the next Ronald Reagan." (638.60 KB pdf file

We need one page of these that are fronts and, one page of these for the backs, that we can print and cut, to fill the prepaid envelopes from the RNC and the ACU.

There will be a price to pay for supporting McCain.

We can vote conservative on Senate and House primary seats, and vote for anyone other than McCain on the Presidential seat, including a democrat in the general election.

I still believe you have to file the proper paperwork to validate the citizenship. I don’t believe it was automatic in the Canal Zone, unless on a military base proper. He may have been born at a military base hospital for all I know. That would be the same as him being born on U.S. soil I believe.

Not Guantanamo: it is considered Cuban territory the U.S. leases (even if the Cubans refuse payment). The Canal Zone was considered US territory.

Not automatically. You need to fill out forms at the nearest embassy. You’ll have to prove the parents are citizens and that the child was born to them.

It’s a formality, but it still has to be complied with.

If McInsane becomes president, then that anchor baby will be able to become president. Well, if Hitlery or Osama Obama becomes president too, the anchor baby is allowed to become president. Looks like the best thing to do is to be a thorn in McCain’s side when he runs for president and remind him he’s running as a Republican and hopefully he’ll see the light.

Well, conversely we have:

“Obama was born in Honolulu to a black Kenyan father and a white American mother. He lived most of his early life in the U.S. state of Hawaii. From ages six to ten, he lived in Jakarta, Indonesia with his mother and Indonesian stepfather.”

... so he’s sort of an American? That Indonesian business bugs me. I’m sorry. Eligibility, Schmeligibility.

Also .. didn’t the Panama Canal belong to the USA at that time ..?? I know Jimmie Carter GAVE IT BACK TO PANAMA when he was president.

Barry Goldwater was born in the territory of Arizona before it was a state. Some idiot filed suit to have him disqualified because he was not a 'native born' US citizen.

Pure Idiocy.

My brother and I were born in civilian (local national) hospitals in England and Italy respectively to a military father. We both have a requried consular "Report of Birth Abroad" (FS140) proving our citizenship.

My younger son was born in a military hospital in Germany. He, too, required the FS140 to prove citizenship.
