Dallas rape suspect beaten, shot in melee

01:46 PM CST on Saturday, February 9, 2008

By TANYA EISERER / The Dallas Morning News

WFAA-TV

People at the apartment complex are refusing to talk about the incident.

A mob turned the tables on a man accused of raping a mother at knifepoint in her Red Bird-area apartment with her children present, authorities said.

The 26-year-old man, who had not been identified, was undergoing surgery Friday afternoon after being beaten with a baseball bat and shot at least twice, apparently once in the head.

"I would have to say this is unusual," Lt. Sally Lannom, commander of the assaults unit for the Dallas police, said of the melee. "It is outside the norm."

The mother, who didn't know her attacker, was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital. Her condition was unknown.

At the apartment complex, only one woman was willing to talk about what happened.

"He got what he deserved," Sharon Ivy said. "You don't go into [a] house ... do things to [a] momma and think it's all right. That was just a community watch."

According to police, the man forced his way into the 22-year-old woman's unlocked apartment in the 1400 block of West Wheatland Road around noon. Five children, some of whom belonged to the woman, were in the apartment at the time, police said.

"The suspect forced her into the bedroom and started tearing her clothes off," Lt. Lannom said. He then sexually assaulted her, police said.

Some of the children fled the apartment as the assault was going on, police said. When the man laid down the knife and began getting dressed, the woman ran out of her apartment to tell her boyfriend, who was in the parking lot with several friends, police said.

"She told him what was going on," Lt. Lannom said. He and his friends confronted the suspect in the apartment and a fight ensued, she said.

Police said the fight spilled out into the parking lot, with an unknown number of people taking part in the melee.

The suspect eventually broke free and ran into another apartment, where he was shot. He did not live in that apartment, but it may belong to a relative, police said.

The melee that followed the assault was under investigation, and it was unclear Friday whether charges would be filed.

"That was just a community watch."

If the law won't do it, the community will. In this case, I sympathize.

My guess is that it was a black on black crime, but who knows? Hispanic on Hispanic? White on white? Evidently the “community” is pretty tough, in any case.

His fleeing to a relative’s apartment suggests that he lives in the neighborhood too.

Nope, just can't seem to work up a tear for the guy if it went down like the witness described it.

Good for them!!More of that should happen..The police arrest these criminals and some judges give them a little or no time in jail..It isn’t the policeman fault these criminals are walking around and raping and murdering people it is the judges and juries (if they get to trial) that let them go..

I have the feeling that there's going to be collective amnesia. The cops might have a difficult time determining who in the crowd to charge.

Simple, in our political correct society, it is not pc to identify a perp, especially if it is a minority or one who may have entered illegally. There is an agenga at play when it comes to the msm. Have you not seen it????

I believe Red Bird is in this area.

I found a “demogrpahics” web page that, amazingly enough, doesn’t list ethnicity. But it does list crime and the occurance of various crimes are wayyyy above normal.

I really hate posts like this. Race does not cause crime, poverty does not cause crime. Lack of solid homes, morals, and parental involvement are all causes of crime.

Classic example of a story where you should NOT pass judgment til you hear all the facts.

This guy (a) breaks into an apartment at this hour, with people around? (b) with 5 children in the apartment? (c) with the woman’s boyfriend and lots of friends downstairs?

Just as likely that this is a drug deal gone wrong, and the guys came up with a rape story to cover.

Maybe its true, maybe not, but no judgment should be passed without an investigation and evidence.

p.s.

If it was proven he did it, fire away.

MoonMan, great point.

She could have been cheating on her boyfriend, got pissed or thought she would get caught, and busted out the R word.

Or, she could be a prostitute on the side, and he wouldn’t pay.

Or, it could be a drug deal gone bad.

Tons of other reasons it could be. Dunno til we hear the evidence.

and ran into another apartment, where he was shot. He did not live in that apartment

So, the shooting was justified. As far as I am concerned, a crazed rapist was fleeing from a citizens' arrest, he fled to an apartment where he attempted to take a hostage, who was thankfully was armed and saved themselves by using their 2nd amendment rights. Case closed. Next.

Your sentence contradicts itself to a certain degree.

Just exchange "contribute to" for "cause"

Depends on if there were any "witnesses". If indeed there were "witnesses" then it will depend on the "memory" of those "witnesses".

“Poverty does not cause crime, but it is definitely an associated factor to certain types of crime.”

Like what? Theft? Look to Enron, Worldcom, and so forth. Lack of morals, education, and poor family structure generate higher crime rates. They also cause higher poverty rates which causes some people to think they are related.

Many people grow up poor and do not become criminals. Others grow up rich and do.

Margret Sanger caused a great deal of that with her racist abortion stance. Spurred on by liberals.

Take a look at some stats.

It's racist you know that a larger proportion of certain races commit certain crimes and are imprisoned then their population percentage would dictate.

It's racist, ask Sharpton and Jackson.

“Margret Sanger caused a great deal of that with her racist abortion stance. Spurred on by liberals.”

She openly supported Hitler prior to WWII. She openly supported euthanasia, and killing the babies of undesirables. Undesirables included blacks, handicapped, any non-white which I think included Irish at that time. She was very racist.

“It’s racist you know that a larger proportion of certain races commit certain crimes and are imprisoned then their population percentage would dictate.”

I get your sarcasm and agree. If you commit a crime you should do the time regardless of race.

On the other hand, if the kids saw the retribution the perp had to pay for his misdeeds, it might be a good lesson for them. Most of the time kids see criminals get away scott free after something like this, because the perp is never brought to justice.
