Quietly, while Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have been inspiring Democrats everywhere with their rolling bitchfest, congressional superduo Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have completed one of the most awesome political collapses since Neville Chamberlain. At long last, the Democratic leaders of Congress have publicly surrendered on the Iraq War, just one year after being swept into power with a firm mandate to end it.

I know that this is The Rolling Stone.

But this article is illustrative of just how internally divisive and disillusioned the leftist anti-war movement and the Democrat Party have become in the wake of the surge.

Grab the popcorn...this should be a great show!

Pelosi seemed especially broken up about having to surrender on Iraq,

As opposed to surrendering in Iraq?? A totally alternative universe..

Actually this was very good politics on the part of Queen Bee Nanacy Pelosi and the noble Knight Reid, Harry of Nevada.

The anti-war left, very vocal but not a serious political movement any more, seemingly got what they wanted with the objections raised by the Democraticans prior to and immediately after the 2006 mid-term elections. The reality, however, was George W. Bush was NEVER going to be impeached, and whatever he wanted to do on Iraq, would not be seriously challenged. By meekly surrendering to the wisdom of the Bush Administration, they have in fact solidified their chances of retaining the House and Senate in the 2008 election, as the broader part of the US voters, even many of those on the Left, have found much to agree with in the surge and suppression of most of the further violence in Iraq.

About the only thing that would reverse that opinion among the majority of US voters would be another attack of the magnitude of 9/11 in the US, this time without anyone of the stature of Rudy Giuliani to direct and establish authority in the aftermath. No doubt, the various factions of Islamofascist terrorism are cognizant of this situation, and are perfectly willing to withhold their assault until AFTER the US elections in November 2008.

The tone of the article belies your thought. There would appear to be some disgruntled perhaps bitter individuals.

The war will be won and off the table except for the bitter defeat for the peacemongers. What will they do?

With the winds of an Iranian war blowing, will they reelect those who have demonstrated nothing but failure?

I think this moron is a regular on that homo Bill Maher’s show. He’s one of those limp-wristed liberals who thinks dropping F-bombs makes him tough. It doesn’t matter what he does, he’ll never be anything but a liberal weakling.

It’s pretty ironic that the very same Pelosi and Reed who railed against the “do-nothing” Republican Congress are having trouble pushing their agenda through.

The bottom line is that it’s tough for either party to push through the agendas of their respective bases in a country that’s as evenly divided politically as the US is right now. That’s just the nature of divided government.

So what do they do in lieu of that? The parties - both of them - do what they do best: SPEND MONEY.

Can't Lefties write without cursing?

Anway, this comment:

["much of what has passed for peace activism in the past year was little more than a thinly veiled scheme to use popular discontent over the war to unseat vulnerable Republicans up for re-election in 2008."]

...made me laugh because, apparently, every once in a while, a "useful idiot" wakes up the the fact that they are both owned and used.

I'd enjoy it more if we didn't have our own, parallel, problem.

Go/Don't Go McCain!

Egad.

“disillusioned”? Well, not exactly. In 2006 Democrats got Senate and Congress majorities posing as candidates who are more conservative than their Republican opponents. That was the core strategy by DNC spearheaded by R. Emmanuel. And Rolling Stones claims a voters’ mandate to surrender Iraq or cut troops funding?! All I can say is as far as illusions concerned, the left just goes nuttier...

The Left doesn't consider appeasement and surrender to be failure, but the noble actions of a superior, enlightened, progressive class.

The Left believes that once their guy or gal is in the WH, they will be able to talk Iran into shelving any nuclear weapons they may have. The fact that their "diplomacy" has resulted in the deaths of thousands is just one more truth that doesn't exist in their alternate universe.
