A lead challenger to U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham in the state Republican primary said during a Monday stop in Spartanburg he’s more in line with South Carolinians when it comes to immigration reform.

Buddy Witherspoon

Buddy Witherspoon, a Lexington orthodontist and former Republican National Committee member, is seeking to unseat Graham, R-S.C.

South Carolina Republicans need to do two things this year- hold Lindsay Graham to under 50% in the initial primary, than unseat him in the runoff.

Well, the Strom Thurmond reference may be a mistake.

I would love to see Lindsey beaten, but is this the guy to do it?

Well, no one else better-known was willing to step up, although a local Mayor is also in the running. Either will be fine with me, and the DemocRATS show no sign of putting up a serious candidate.

I think it would be great if Graham got defeated in the primary. I used to live in SC when Thurmond and Hollings were Senators. DeMint needs someone more like him than Graham.

Who is the mayor in SC that might run?

Mark McBride is the Mayor of Myrtle Beach.

I’d take either, and what matters in the first primary is getting Graham below 50%.

It’s uphill (no well-known candidates are running), but Graham’s approval ratings have fallen, so it’s possible.

Since I’ve no one in the Presidential race to contribute to, I’ve been thinking of dividing up what I’d normally contribute to conservative candidates that I find out about.

I’m crossing my fingers that Linday looses.

>> Senate challenger says Graham out of step with S.C. voters <<

Three thoughts:

1) Isn't this the same South Carolina who just HANDED McCain his "front runner status" by selecting HIM in the primary? See post #30. It seems to that Buddy Witherspoon is the one who's "out of step" with S.C. voters. If he's trying to make the case that S.C. doesn't want politicians who are cozy with McCain and weak on issues like amnesty, the election results would seem to sending the opposite message. So where was Witherspoon to complain when McCain & (fellow McCain fan) Fred Thompson's "leadership" in the Senate was getting rave reviews in SC?

2) Someone explain to me why the heck South Carolina needs to waste taxpayers money on ANOTHER primary this year? Is it really that hard to coordinate the federal and state primary on the SAME day, as we did in Illinois when we moved our primary back to February 5th? South Carolina should have selected their Senate nominee the same day as they selected their Presidential nominee. To do otherwise is to just waste people's time and money on a totally pointless election a few monthes later. The local GOP officials must come from the Arnold Schwartzenegger school of "let's hold needless extra elections all the time" school of fiscal conservativism.

3) I never heard of this "well known Lindsey Graham primary challenger" Buddy Witherspoon until the day he announced. Not one South Carolinian I've ever met mentioned his name in political circles to me before he announced, either. I HAVE heard of Mayor McBride before -- he ran a rather innovative statewide campaign in 2004 (loved his website at the time, haven't checked his current one), although I was backing Gov. Beasley at the time, McBride was probably my second choice. And Myrtle Beach ain't exactly a little known destitation. All of which seems to suggest if there is any "major" primary challenger to Graham, it would be Mark McBridge, not the never-before-elected Buddy Witherspoon. Which in turn, seems to suggest, if Witherspoon is looking to "defeat Graham", he should be backing McBride instead of splitting the anti-Graham vote with him.

Just a few pointers.

So if there's a general election and Lindsey is tied in the polls against a pro-abortion, pro-gay, terrorist appeasing surrender monkey RAT, you'll let the RAT win and give them another Harry Reid yes-man in the Senate? Why not just donate to Harry Reid while you're at it?

I’d give to Buddy’s campaign and I’ve never heard of him.

Well, let's make sure he's not a donkey in an elephant suit.

The reason we have so many RINO's in Congress is that we didn't do as well as we should have early on.

Well, that and the fact that the GOP supported RINO incumbents over conservatives running against them.

Case in fact - They supported Specter over Rat Toomey, and did little to help Santorum in his loss to Bob Casey, Jr.

I hope this guy is right of Graham. We could do better than Lindsey.

In response to your question, it is the same South Carolina which gave McCain a victory. But it was a narrow victory with a 33% plurality in a multi-candidate race with mostly flawed candidates. Hardly an overwhelming endorsement.

And now South Carolina is having another primary consisting of... a multi-candidate race with mostly flawed (little known, third-tier) candidates. Sounds like a repeat of the Presidential primary to me.

Which leads to my third point about Mayor McBride being more of a "credible" challenger than Buddy "Who am I" Witherspoon claims to be.

Nah, I don’t think McCain will choose Lindsay as his veep. First, he needs a conservative to balance his own liberal leanings... and second, the other side will already most likely have a woman on the ticket.
