In a surge of gun violence on Milwaukee's north side early Saturday, 11 people were shot in what police said were three unrelated situations. All are expected to live.
The gunmen remained at large late Saturday.
In a fourth shooting, two groups of people fired on each other's houses, authorities said.
Fire Department medics and doctors at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa hustled to treat the injured, as all the shootings spanned less than two hours, beginning at 1:10 a.m.
Common Council President Willie L. Hines Jr. during a news conference Saturday afternoon vowed to work with police to "get the guns off the streets."
"I'm very frustrated, disturbed and saddened by the escalating gun violence that's happening in Milwaukee," said Hines, who is up for re-election in April.
Last year, the Journal Sentinel reported that increased gun violence resulted in hospitals' treating 26% more gunshot victims and that serious shootings were happening at a record-setting pace. The data used in the analysis were from 2006 and included assaults, accidents and self-inflicted wounds.
The spike in shootings came as the number of shooting deaths in Milwaukee dropped by 18% in 2006, boosting experts' arguments that the true measure of gun violence in a community is the total number of shootings, not homicides.
The shootings reported by police Saturday were either spurred by an argument or were randomly done by passengers firing out of a car at other people.
As was the case Saturday, most shooting victims do not die; the newspaper's analysis found that hundreds of people struck by gunfire in Milwaukee survive. The shootings cost taxpayers, hospitals and people with insurance tens of millions of dollars a year and consume police officers' time, leading to slow response times for less-urgent calls.
First Battalion Chief Salvatore Santoro of the Milwaukee Fire Department said the number of shootings in the short period Saturday required a massive response.
"They were pulling companies from all over the place," he said. Emergency responders "stayed calm and cool while the circumstances were going on, and they were able to give the people the first aid they needed to get them to the hospital. It was pretty impressive."
Police gave these details:
• Four men got into a fight about 1:10 a.m. at the Autumn Bar, 2579 N. Teutonia Ave., and one of them came back with a gun and fired randomly into the bar from an open door, hitting four patrons. A 25-year-old man was shot in the upper right chest, a 23-year-old was shot in the left thigh, an 18-year-old woman was shot in both arms, and a 22-year-old man was shot in the right thigh. The gunman fled.
• Ten minutes later, an argument at Ike's Lounge, 2432 W. Garfield Ave., began when one patron spilled a drink on another patron. The argument spilled out onto the sidewalk, and when some of the patrons saw guns, they ran back into the bar. The victims were injured by shots fired from outside that went through the walls and windows of the bar. A 20-year-old woman was struck in the lower back, a 26-year-old man was hit in the left leg, a 29-year-old man was hit in the right ankle, a 30-year-old man was hit in the right buttocks and back, a 33-year-old woman was hit in the back, and a 54-year-old woman was shot in both ankles.
• About one hour later, about 2:15 a.m., two men, ages 45 and 48, were walking in the 2800 block of W. Clarke St. when a passenger in a passing car fired a shot at them. The 45-year-old was struck once in the abdomen. The men told police that they did not know the people in the car.
• Ten minutes after that, police received a call that multiple shots had been fired into a house in the 3900 block of N. 40th St. Police said the occupants of that house then drove to a house in the 5900 block of N. 68th St. and fired multiple shots into that house. Two men, ages 26 and 29, were arrested.
An unrelated shooting occurred about 9:55 p.m. Friday. Police said a 42-year-old woman was shot in the right leg after a gunshot fired from a car went through her front door in the 1900 block of N. 32nd St.
Hines, who represents the 15th Aldermanic District, which is where the shootings occurred or is near them, said he'll meet with Police Chief Edward Flynn on Monday to discuss possible solutions and will review the licenses and police records of the bars where some of the shots were fired.
What's Milwaukee going to be like this coming summer when people actually want to be outside?

I didn’t seek out your thread. I had no idea you started it when I clicked on it. And I didn’t comment because you started it. I commented because of the inane comments about race on the thread.
I’m not the one who lives in your hellhole. I stay away from places like that. Don’t blame me if you can’t carry firearms; I live in a place where you can. I also have nothing o do with whether or not your city is a sanctuary.
I ask again, please explain how listing the race of perps and victims in news stories will help solve your crime problem.

If you’re saying that the media are hiding the fact that there’s a shooting war, then that’s obviously wrong. It needs to be out here. There’s also nothing at all wrong with pointing out where most of the violence is coming from. But I fail to see how pointing out the race or ethnicity of every perp or victim (especially when much of that violence is not even between different races) accomplishes anything positive.
And what about the 18 year old woman who was shot in the bar? I hope she wasn’t a patron!

OK, let's say the police are looking for 3 black men in their 20s, about 5'9"-6'1" tall, 180-220 lbs. They were wearing hooded jackets and loose fitting jeans.
Did this really narrow things down? Do you really thing people are looking for white guys?
Most likely people involved in this melee knew who the shooters were anyways and are keeping their mouths shut.
Race and nationality are important because they inform the debate about immigration and crime. The MSM does not want to admit the cost of immigration in terms of social disruption and plain old dollars. Further, the MSM media peddles the nonsense that differential educational, economic and legal (like in gettin’ arrested) outcomes of minorities and whites are the result of racism.
White folks rarely drive into minority and immigrant neighborhoods and businesses and start shooting the place up. Minorities go to jail more because they commit more crimes. Minorities are more often the victims of crime because they live with other members of their race and nationalities.
Overwhelming white New Hampshire has about as many guns as residents. Like Switzerland. It also has homicide and crime rates like Switherland’s.
Maybe it IS time for America to enact gun control laws for MINORITIES.

Miller Brewing Executive shot and killed by hispanic gang members just a bit over a week ago in Milwaukee. A very under reported story here in the Milwaukee press — hispanic gangs targeting gay men for muggings, beatings and shootings. An NML trainer/recruiter was hit with the same M.O. a few years back - a personal acquaintance, well dressed and well mannered. Shot 3 times.
Bay View neighborhood had 30 daylight armed holdups last summer. A drug dealer built a group of “crime gangs” to go into the unarmed parts of the city, restaurants, groceries and boutiques — members later admitted in the Journal to targeted whites because they tended to be unarmed.
But still the bias slants to “poor downtrodden minorities” in Milwaukee. Victims of their own “don’t snitch” communities while the flight continues.

A statistic I would like to see Milwaukee and other metropolitan areas correlate to their gun violence statistic is how many of their shootings are directly related to gang activity or drug trafficking.
Most often random shooting from cars is gang related. I also would not be surprised if these bars were in neighborhoods with large gang populations.
Gang activity and drug trafficking have come together to escalate violence in the inner cities. Drug income has provided the street gangs with the funds to purchase more and better quality firearms. The street gangs of the twentieth century did not have these funds and were limited to baseball bats and knives for the most part.
Today’s street gangs are becoming the organized crime syndicates of the twenty first century. The bad part of this development is that the street gangs do not have the discipline of the crime families of mid twentieth century that moderated the violence of individual members.
I hate to say it (and I know I will get flamed) but the combination of War on Poverty and the War on Drugs has turned our nations inner cities in to a free fire zone.

I don't think it has anything to do with race but it is a cultural problem and the culture that these problems are centered in is embraced by a large number of the unmentionable.

There are journalistic standards. For instance, if a coupla white lacross players did not rape a mentally unstable black stripper, then that proves racism, right? And it’s front page news. With that pesky little disqualifying adverb (”not”) dropped. Come on, since when has an adverb been allowed to get in the way of the narrative?
In this case the race of the (non) perpetrators and the (non) victim was the entire reason for the story.
Only the cops should know what they look like? C'mon now. When you read this story were you visualizing white perps? Nobody else was either.
