U.S. May Ask Death for 9-11 Suspects

WASHINGTON -- The Pentagon is planning to charge six detainees at Guantanamo Bay for the Sept. 11 terror attacks on America and seek the death penalty.

Defense Department spokesman Bryan Whitman said an announcement of the charges could come Monday.

A second official said that military leaders also will seek the death penalty for the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans.

Among those held at Guantanamo is Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the suspected mastermind of the attack six years ago in which hijacked planes were flown into buildings in New York and Washington. Five others are expected to be named in sworn charges.

"The department has been working diligently to prepare cases and bring charges against a number of individuals who have been involved in some of the most grievous acts of violence and terror against the United States and our allies," Whitman said.

Prosecutors have been working for years to assemble the case against suspects in the attacks in New York and Washington that prompted the Bush administration to launch its global war on terror.

"The prosecution team is close to moving forward on referring charges on a number of individuals," Whitman said, declining to name the defendants.

The New York Times reported in Monday's editions that the others are Mohammed al-Qahtani, the man officials have labeled the 20th hijacker; Ramzi bin al-Shibh, said to have been the main intermediary between the hijackers and leaders of Al Qaeda; Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali, known as Ammar al-Baluchi, a nephew of Khalid Sheik Mohammed, who has been identified as Mohammed's lieutenant for the 2001 operation; al-Baluchi's assistant, Mustafa Ahmed al-Hawsawi; and Walid bin Attash, a detainee known as Khallad, who investigators say selected and trained some of the hijackers.

The important word in the headline being "may". They MAY ask for death, or the MAY not. They still can't decide, 6 -1/2 years later.

To placate the Dems who will have a fit about executing these scum, perhaps the one most prone to violence should be given a “rehabilitating” work release janitor’s job in the US Capital emptying the waste baskets and mopping the floors in the offices of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Sen. Clinton.

If they go for the death penalty, every left-wing crackpot government in the world is going to go into whine mode. The caterwauling will be like nothing you’ve ever heard. It’ll go on forever, even after the punishment is inflicted on the last one, which will probably take 25 years.

It would be better to stick them in the underground fortress at ADX Florence. There they can complete their trip to madness, out of sight of the public.

Good, as long as they are tried and continue to be held in Cuba after trial.

I don’t see the benefit of bringing these terrorists to America, I see a lot of possible risk in doing so from a security angle.

I have an uneasy doubt as to whether these murders will ever be executed. In our current PC Nation, I suspect these murders will be declared rehabilitated and released. Khalid Sheik Mohammed will be given a job in the next administration overlooking National Security. BTW, he could do as good a job as is being done now and in the present.

Line em up against a wall, assemble the firing squad and - BANG!! ... problem solved. It's 'stuff' like this "years" that gives credence to Edward's line that the 'War On Terror' is nothing but a bumper sticker slogan.

And puh-leaze, 'Global War on Terrorism'? Utter tripe, that's neo-con bullsh*t, there is no 'global war'. If there was we'd now be fighting in about 20 other countries and on every continent - except Antarctica, just like in WWII. That was a 'global war', aka 'World War'. (Did we win in Syria yet? Burma? Anywhere in Africa? Or how about Tibet or the Philippines?)

Plus, you can't win 'a war' fighting it in the GD courts. When there's more JAG Officers on the Battlefield than Infantrymen, Houston, we've got a problem. And if that's the way it is -- due to political correctness and 'feelings' -- we've already lost.

(I'm sorry but I'm just mad as heck now. We're playing word games and making nice-nice with terrorists while slowly committing suicide)

Way past time. These murders should have been brought to justice because now they can delay the trial and hope that a more sympathetic administration will be less diligent in perusing the cases against them and making sure they are put to death for their crimes.

Press going on and on about ‘torture’ and ‘classified info’ being released during the trail!! Good Grief!! Every single question is about the so called ‘torture’!!

I will try to get a transcript from the DOD briefing ASAP and post it so those who are missing this can read it. They are now asking about the terrorists rights to appeal and whether any evidence gotten from ‘torture’ can stand up in a ‘court of law’.

Some people say that killing them will only turn them into martyrs in the eyes of the goathumpers Islamic fundamentalists, and will thus be unlikely to deter future jihadis. I disagree, but can still accept a compromise.

IMO, we should compel them to commit suicide, which, in Islamic mythology, negates all "good works" (killing infidels, raping adulterous women, stoning homosexuals, etc) and sends the sinner directly to hell for eternity, where they suffer endless repetition of their suicidal act.

While especially farfetched in the PC pussy-land that America is turning into, I am very fond of the idea of deprogramming them from their cult as best as possible, and then subjecting them to conditions of (non-fatal) brutal suffering, with their only escape being to pass through flames and leap to their deaths.

If you divide the problem’s weight by (I think) 1250 foot-pounds, you get the length of the solution, which generally ranges from five to seven feet. Unfortunately, Albert Pierrepoint, who was the expert on this practice (”a long drop and a sudden stop”), is long dead. There is nothing wrong with these individuals (assuming that they are found guilty, of course) that Pierrepoint could not have fixed.

Give them the choice of life without parole in the Supermax facility in Colorado, the one in which they stay in a concrete cell for 23 hours a day, or execution. Oh yes—the ONLY show they get on the TV in their cell is Rosie O’Donnell.

They will stop all appeals and request immediate execution. That will take care of protests from foreign governments.
