I don’t care what his politics were, this is a terrible shame.
To: managusta
Was he still in office? I thought I saw him on CSPAN just a couple of weeks ago.

Can anyone identify which party he was in, and identify his term of service. I hate to give NBC the hit.
That said, and regardless of the answers, may God bless and comfort his family and friends.

Democrat from the San Fransico area. About as far left socialist as you can get. Love abortion only a little less than he loved gun control.

The last of the sincere liberals. The idealism of the 60s democrat died with Lantos.
The remaining liberals are self-serving power grabbers or agenda pushers.

Even though I disagreed with almost all of his political positions, Tom Lantos came from being a Holocaust survivor to being a member of Congress.
That in itself is deserving of respect and keep him in our prayers, and for his family.

Lantos suffered from esphogial cancer(EC). EC is usually discovered too late and most don’t survive for a long time.
Ann Richards also died of this disease.
If you are taking those little purple pills for GERD..then you also are at tisk and should be carefull to have frequent check ups by good Doc.

I admire the tenacity he had to survive the Holocaust. Still, I never understood why he couldn’t identify the fascism in his political party here in the US.
To: managusta
Lantos isn't dead. He will return when darkness arrives!
I wonder if "Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565" will be played at his funeral?
In all seriousness, thoughts of symphathy for his family are in order.

Holocaust survivors should be respected in the same way we respect POW’s from Viet Nam. They have proven their strength. Remember professor Librescu who sacrificed himself to save his students at Virginia Tech? RIP Lantos.

I’m a 14 year survivor of esophogeal cancer... very lucky to have found it early (at age 46) by a very good internist and then quickly referred to the best surgeon in the world at Sloan Kettering. 10 days elapsed from the time my tumor was “discovered/determined” and when it was removed. If I was living in Canada... well, I’d hate to consider the result.
Advice to fellow Freepers: when your body starts giving you signals, pay attention and get a good doc to look for the cause.
RIP, Rep. Tom Lantos.

I don’t wish to speak ill of the dead*, nor do I wish to tell untruths about them, positive or negative, so I will say this.
Tom Lantos had his moments, like when he called former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder a “political prostitute”, and when he said that former French president Jacques-strap Chirac failed to respect the sacrifices of the American troops who liberated France. He also chewed out a Dutch idiot who was whining about Guantanamo, saying that “Europe was not as outraged by Auschwitz as by Guantanamo.”
*This applies to human beings only. When Castro croaks, I’ll be celebrating.

Compare the prayers and best wishes we’re offering Lantos’ family with the vile hatred from the assholes at DU and Kos when Reagan died. There are no words, no numbers, no percentages, no ratios sufficient to describe how much better we are than them.
