DALLAS -- Gov. Rick Perry today told members of an influential Hispanic organization that building a fence between El Paso and Brownsville is "absolutely not the answer" to the immigration problem.
Perrys comments before the Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce came less than two weeks after he told reporters in Austin that "there is some strategic fencing that we support. ... that you can use strategic fencing to help control the flow of illegal activities."
The governor made no comments about strategic fencing during his speech today. Instead, his comments were similar to what he made a few months ago during a meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderon in Mexico City. At that time, Perry railed against all of the "mean rhetoric" and said that border fences "absolutely wont work," according to published reports.
Members of the audience applauded Perry when he made the comments about the fence.
Perry's position on building a border fence "has never changed," spokesman Robert Black said.
"The governor has always said fence or wall the entire length of the Texas-Mexico border is nonsensical and wont work. But strategic fencing in your urban areas is useful and can work," Black said.
Speaking at a luncheon today, Perry said that better coordination among local, state and federal authorities is the way to deal with the immigration problem. Officials should use "the technology that we have available" and "be wise about how we secure our borders," Perry said.
Perry added that officials must not "demonize those with Latino heritage who are law-abiding members of our community."
"We want to make sure that the good guys get in and the bad guys stay out."
This Texan says that he’s REALLY REALLY sick of this guy!
‘absolutely not the answer’
Not suppose to be the answer. It is however an answer and part of a bigger solution starting to be implemented.
So what is the answer according to Governor Perry?
The purpose of the fence, stated in sixteen words.
D1 said, “Then Perry is definately not the answer.”
I agree. A fence is not nearly enough. It needs to be a much more effective barrier than just a fence.
No wonder that joker likes McCain. They’re both ridiculously pro-illegal.
It’s not just about the length, it’s also about the width and height.
Et tu Texas?
How about telling LULAC and their ilk to quit demonizing US citizens who want to see enforcement of our immigration laws.
ping
However, a 10 lane toll road from the border to Kansas is a great idea! /sarc
It's El Gobienero Pero.
Any wall can be breached..The problem is in the employment sector and the “goodie” sector. And those are Americans running the show. “PAY THEM”...and they will come!!
Wonder if drug cartel money is starting to reach into Texas politics?
Whatever it takes to get the proper prophylactic effect.
More BS. The slime, illegally pouring across the border are neither law abiding nor members of our society. Is he a McCain supporter?
Right. And without question this excludes those who crossed the border illegally - who are, in 100% of the cases, NOT law-abiding.
Whites To Become Minority by 2050, Study Predicts - February 11, 2008 - The New York Sun
Non-Hispanic whites will become a minority in America and the Hispanic population will triple in size in less than 50 years if immigration flows carry on at the current rate, according to a new study published today by the Pew Hispanic Center.
Even if new restrictions are placed on immigration, immigrants will be responsible for more than 70% of the nation’s population growth by 2050 as the native population ages and its birth rate declines, the study found, basing its findings on past trends, present conditions, and factors that could affect future behavior.
RELATED: Complete Report (pdf)
If the study’s predictions play out, America’s population growth will keep pace with China and India, even as European countries see their populations decline further by mid-century.
Among the findings in the report: Nearly one in five Americans will be an immigrant by 2050, compared to one in eight today; Latinos will make up a third of the nation’s population, compared to 14% now; and the African American population will grow by more than 50%, but will see its share of the population edge up only slightly, to a little more than 13%.
The report also predicts that the number of non-Hispanic whites will grow by 4%, but will drop to 47% of the country’s population from 67% in 2005.
The main finding of the report that immigrants and their children will be responsible for at least 70%, but possibly more than 80% of the nation’s population growth has significant implications as baby boomers age. With the birth rate of native born people lagging, the increase in immigrants will ensure that the working-age population continues to grow: foreign-born adults will comprise 23% of the working-age population in 2050, compared to 15% now, while Hispanics will make up a third of foreign-born workers, compared to 14% now, the study predicted.
Much of the growth among immigrants will come as foreign-born people, particularly Asians and Hispanics, have more children, rather than from new arrivals to the country.
The projected growth puts America on a path to record growth among immigrants that will outstrip the immigration booms of 1890 and 1910.
Despite the growing number of immigrants, the baby boomer generation is likely to create a heavy strain as it ages, the report suggests. By 2050, the number of elderly people will rise to 81 million, or one in five Americans, compared to 37 million today, with very little of that growth attributable to immigrants. Combined with the expected growth of dependent children, the number of dependents per 100 working adults will rise to 72 from 59 now.
The report’s researchers, Jeffery Passel and D’Vera Cohn, created different models for their predictions based on possible changes to the immigration system, which each of the presidential candidates have vowed to change.
Their findings could reverberate on the campaign trail, where the focus on immigration has tapered off in recent weeks as several hard-line immigration candidates on the Republican side have dropped out of the race. Some anti-immigration groups have rallied against Senator McCain’s past pro-immigration positions, however, and predictions that immigrant growth is set to make non-Hispanic whites a minority could give the groups new ammunition as they try to drum up opposition to his candidacy among conservatives.
As for the lagging economy, also a major issue in the campaign, recent studies have drawn conflicting conclusions about the impact of immigrants. Some studies have suggested that providing public services to illegal immigrants can be costly, but a major study based on immigrant contributions in New York State last fall found that immigrants have an overwhelmingly positive economic impact.
Perry is campaigning to be McAmnesty’s VP. The two of them could work together to bring in the North American Union.
So, Rick, what is the answer, then? Your toll road?
Q: Would it be small of me to wish that Mexican drug dealers have their way with his wife and daughter if he has one?
Perry Ping!
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.
This Texan is disgusted by Perry and did not vote for him. He is kissing McCain’s ass in his quest to be VP.
Shut up Perry! You are an embarrassment.
I am SO disgusted and ashamed that I voted for this stinking POS, for reason after reason after reason after reason.
I remember arguing on his behalf right here in the forum. Boy was I wrong.
He is a state-level example OF THE WORST DEGREE of all that is horribly wrong with the GOP.
There has to be some reason for the stupidity of these politicians. Cartel money is as good a reason as any.
I can’t believe I voted for such a assclown.
Vote the bum out!
Not a Texan, but nearby (NM).
Perry is pretty the same as our governor on this issue -— but Perry has prettier hair (and a wider stance, I suspect).
Perry, you're an idiot. No one is 'demonizing' legal immigrants from any 'heritage'. It is the illegals with which we have an issue.
“Perry is campaigning to be McAmnestys VP.”
Given the feedback I get re: Perry, that’s a sure way to lose Texas for the Republicans.
He’s a Bush Republican and that is bad for opponents of illegal immigration.
These politicians have opened up a can of worms and they ARE FRIGHTENED for their political lives by the illegal hispanic vote as well as fellow traveller legals who support the illegal invasion.
The CPAC poll showed that, by far, the two most important issues to conservatives were:
***1 War on Terror
***1 Illegal Immigration

Ack. Gonna poke a stick in our eye right before the election, McCain?
Perry and every other politician that advocates undermining the Rule Of Law should be jailed on Obstruction Of Justice.
And is fences don’t work why is there one surrounding your governors mansion, Gov. Perry?
How about a minefield?
Really why would Perry want a fence? After all it might actually help to stop the illegals and then the companies who fund his existence in politics would have to pay a decent salary to American citizens.

No kidding. Let's just make sure that we define illegal aliens as bad guys.
What an Aggie..........
RE-ELECT NO ONE ~!!!!
You had kinky and you let kinky get away.
The Texas/Mexico border is awfully long. I can imagine the expense to taxpayers would be quite large.
I don't have a solution to this issue, but I think if they'd crack down on companies that hire illegals (the laws are there, they should be enforced), then maybe ... just maybe ... the amount of jobs available to them would diminish.
Has he ever appeared before the Greater Dallas White Chamber of Commerce?
Or, the Greater Dallas Irish Chamber of Commerce?
Or, Greater Dallas Polish Chamber of Commerce?
Or, Greater Dallas American Chamber of Commerce?
I agree “RE-ELECT NO ONE!!!!” The only way we get our country back is to vote EVERYONE currently in office OUT!
Perry is an Aggie joke, who wants to become McCain's VP.
Bingo! That's what I plan on doing. Any incumbent that is not running unoposed should be scared.
Trust me, 30 million hispanic voters to someone with national aspirations is nothing to joke about. They know you’ll cast your vote on the right side of history so they are busy gathering up whatever coalition that’ll work.
Sick of it !
