NEW YORK (AP) -- An outage has disconnected BlackBerry smart phones across North America. AT&T Inc. says the disruption Monday is affecting all wireless carriers. AT&T first learned about the problem at about 3:30 p.m. EST.
There's no word on the cause or when the problem might be fixed.

RIM notifies of “critical” BlackBerry outage
TORONTO (Reuters) - E-mail service of Research In Motion’s BlackBerry smartphones experienced a “critical severity outage” on Monday, the company told clients in an e-mail.
“This is an emergency notification regarding the current BlackBerry Infrastructure outage,” RIM support account manager Bryan Simpson said in an e-mail. The message said the outage affected enterprise clients and “users of the Americas network.”
RIM was not immediately available for comment and its e-mail gave no estimate on when service may be restored or how many individuals could be affected. ADVERTISEMENT
Last April, a massive outage crashed BlackBerry service across North America, leaving thousands of users without access to wireless e-mail.
Co-CEO Jim Balsillie said at the time that such incidents were “very rare” and the Waterloo, Ontario-based company was taking steps to prevent such an outage from happening again.
Executives, politicians, lawyers and other professionals rely on the BlackBerry for its ability to send secure e-mails.
RIM is also adding more retail customers to its subscriber base, which late last year reached about 12 million people worldwide.
RIM shares fell to $93.14 in after-hours electronic trade, from their regular-session close of $94.47 on the Nasdaq market.
On the Toronto Stock Exchange, the shares finished the day C$4.73 higher at at C$94.62.
“BlackBerry maker Research in Motion did not immediately return a phone call.”
Waaaa, Haaaa, Haaa, Haaa!!!!
Maybe because their PHONES WERE OUT?????
BlackBerry maker Research in Motion did not immediately return a phone call.
Duh There phones don’t work.
I had issues with the last half hour, but all looks well now.
Oh sure, rub it in...
I had issues within the last half hour, but all looks well now.
I guess that explains why my husband hasn’t called me lately.
Related to the Mediterranean cable outages? Paranoia strikes deep.
Mine is working fine, but I’m not on AT&T.
LOL! Now that’s funny.
My IPHONE is working....
Everybody look what's goin' down!
That was FUNNY right there, I don’t care WHO ya are.
But I thought blackberry didn’t provide phone services just e-mail services. And then some company provide their own servers. Somethng not right with this story.
That's right -- keep it light and hopeful!
And pray! Pray with all your might!
Yah but adding the italics put me in third place!
I’m able to use the phone — email is out.
Mines been working all day. And yes I am in North America! :o)
RIM (Blackberry) provides the behind the scenese push transport pipes to send the e-mail to the device from the company servers or desktop redirector. I bet they must have different pipelines for CDMA and GSM carriers as I have been receiving my e-mails.
My BB has a Verizon phone and email from SBC. At least it did.
Third place still pays at the track.
emails coming in now.
Back to work!
I hate the Scenese people.
AT&T has their best working on it.
LOL... caught me typing to quick and not proofing.. I should remember there is a little ‘spell’ button there. :->
Ahh, the Verizon® slogan. And yes I can - thankfully I have the unlimited data plan with my WindowsMobile smart phone that gets e-mails from 3 different servers: one pushed, the other two pulled every 10 minutes...:)
So I guess, not only can I hear you now, I can read you now! In fact, posting from my SCH-i760 phone right now!
Their certainty is...
I’m on the phone with my FREEPER son right now and he still has use of his Blackberry in NE Arkansas.
My rotary phone still works! Technology, bah!
You're more right than you know. He's trying to get out of Mexico.
I’m down since 2:30 CST.
I think AP defines North America as Boston, NY, Wash DC and the United Nations.
Oh great. Now my notoriously addicted hubby is going to go all twitchy from crackberry withdrawal.
show off! ; )
All those folks with the Crack-berries must have been going into withdrawal.
Oy! I wish him luck!
Tell him there’s an old pickup truck leaving seemingly every five minutes.
LOL! That might be his backup plan.
I see his airplane crossed the border (the internet is a beautiful thing) so I feel better now.
Well, if you don’t rely on someone else’s servers/push agents, then there’s no problem ;). Any phone with a broadband data connect should just use POP or IMAP to get their mail, and forgo pushes. Set it up to ping your server as often as you need, but push service through a single central server is about as dangerous as you can get!
Of course, news of this story does explain the “deer-in-the-headlights” look of many folks here at a large, un-named software company in Redmond, WA... Crackberry’s are quiet now!
my husband has the same phone that you do, and never has a problem. i too i like to make fun of the crackberry addicts : )
I can do without my Blackberry any time I want...
But really... The PHONE service on bberries still works, it’s the messaging (email) that messed up. Mine’s been intermittent all afternoon. Werks for a bit, stops, works for a bit, stops...
Ohhhh, maybe it will be back before too long. His seemed okay. I talked him all the way from southern Missouri back down to NE AR this afternoon.
But now, we broke up several times, but always got back with each other right away.
But we always break up when he’s in that area anyway.
Where are you? ;-)
looks like it’s still out

BlackBerry Service Out Intermittently Across N. America; AT&T Says All Carriers Affected
But Garth Turner, a member of the Canadian Parliament, said during a caucus meeting that the incident’s impact couldn’t be overestimated.
“Everyone’s in crisis because they’re all picking away at their BlackBerrys and nothing’s happening,” Turner said. “It’s almost like cutting the phone cables or a total collapse in telegraph lines a century ago. It just isolates people in a way that’s quite phenomenal.”
Bell Canada spokesman Jason Laszlo said the majority of their BlackBerry customers are affected.
“There’s really no estimated time of repair,” Laszlo said.
The BlackBerry service, which lets users check e-mail and access other data services on their handheld devices, has become a lifeline for many business executives and is increasingly popular among consumers with models like the BlackBerry Pearl.
In a statement, RIM said a “data service interruption” was resulting in “intermittent service delays for BlackBerry subscribers in North America.” The company said voice and text messaging services were not affected.
A technical support recording for Canadian wireless provider Rogers Communications Inc. said subscribers could have difficulties sending and receiving messages, activating accounts and using other services like Internet browsing.
The company is “working with our vendor to resolve this issue,” the recording said.
There was no word what caused the outage or when service would be restored.
