Senator John McCain's lifetime rating of 82.3% from the American Conservative Union is often cited as proof that he is conservative. Here is a closer look at that 82.3 rating.
First, a rating of 82.3% is not really that high. It puts Senator McCain in 39th place among senators serving in 2006, the latest year for which the ACU has its ratings posted online.
For that most recent year in particular, McCain scored only 65, putting him in 47th place for that year.
... Generally, McCain has voted less conservatively in more recent years.
... So where did McCain differ from the ACU? The big areas were taxes, campaign finance reform, and immigration. There was also a smattering of support for trial lawyers, federal intervention in health, education, safety or voting issues; internationalism; and some social issues. He was consistently conservative on spending and defense issues.
... What this means is that McCain's ACU ratings since 1998 put him on the liberal side among Republicans.

Where can I find a list of which issues were decided by one vote? I know of two where McCain was on the wrong side. On how many was he on the right side?

Thank you for the graphics. If that was a plot of the annual world temperature averages, you would have a world panic. John McCain would be calling for federal regulations that would call for R-50 insulation in all structures.

Republicans,
I sincerely believe that we must come together to support McCain, mend the GOP and defeat the dimocrats.
Makes sense to me; certainly hope it makes sense to you.

Thanks to Ann Coulter, who first pointed out McKennedy’s failing ACU grade as a Senator in its most recent rating. Her CPAC “unofficial” speech got lots of hits on YouTube.

I keep seeing McCain’s ACU ratings discussed. The numbers do not begin to tell the full picture of what McCain has done in the Senate when he is there. I heard somebody say recently he does not spend much time there.... Tooo much competition to get in front of a camera.

mcvader was only against it because Bush was for it... had it been the other way around... he would still earn the maverick label.

So what? As far as I am concerned, John McCain’s position on Iraq, and the ongoing war against islamic jihadism, trumps all else. If we do not prevail, all this other stuff is just mumbo jumbo, meaningless.
I cannot believe how many folks here, for whatever misguided, childish political reasons, seem willing to overlook this and not support McCain. This is foolish, suicidal, and endangers all of us. Give up your petty political concerns to see the big picture. We are in a hot war for the foreseeable future, with no viable democrat candidate who would take up that challenge. McCain will. Case closed.
