Skip to comments.Ed Rendell, Straight-Talker ('Some whites probably not ready to vote for an African-American...)

Via TPM Election Central, I see that Governor Ed Rendell is back to embarrassing a presidential candidate he ostensibly supports. Here's an account of how Rendell, a Hillary supporter, recently sized up Obama's chances in Pennsylviania:
Gov. Ed "Don't Call Me 'Fast Eddie' " Rendell met with the editorial board of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last week to talk about his latest budget. But before turning the meeting over to his number-crunchers, our voluble governor weighed in on the primary fight between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama and what the Illinois senator could expect from the good people of Pennsylvania at the polls:
"You've got conservative whites here, and I think there are some whites who are probably not ready to vote for an African-American candidate," he said bluntly. Our eyes only met briefly, perhaps because the governor wanted to spare the only black guy in the room from feeling self-conscious for backing an obvious loser. "I believe, looking at the returns in my election, that had Lynn Swann [2006 Republican gubernatorial candidate] been the identical candidate that he was -- well-spoken [note: Mr. Rendell did not call the brother "articulate"], charismatic, good-looking -- but white instead of black, instead of winning by 22 points, I would have won by 17 or so."

Just as a result of idle conversation, I think I know a lot aren’t....Dem & GOP.
Well I if were to vote for him, I would be voting for the white part. So to say that whites aren’t ready to vote for an african american, oh never mind.................
I’d vote for Obama over Rendell in a heartbeat.
I couldn't get any further than that.
Sissy Matthews called them Archie Bunker Democrats.
Same - a lie in the first 4 words.
No problem, Fast Eddie will just get out his goon squad and beat those who resist.
I still can’t believe the people here in PA elected this thing to a second term.
My first thought was: “Where’s the ‘Barf’ alert!”
Same thing happened to M Steele in 06, and Swann and Santorum both got their clocks cleaned in PA in 06, “but” that Zogby pre election poll hangs around the election like a dead sea gull:
30% will not vote for the Black Guy.
43% will not vote for a female CINC
28% would not vote for a Mormon.
It’s sad but true, I bet McCain does will in PA though.
I would happily vote for a black man for president if that man was Thomas Sowell.
The left will play this up big time.
If they can get just a few “guilt” votes in key places, it will help.
Rendell’s wording is almost EXACTLY what I expected.
My expected wording was “There are some voters that still hold just enough racist views that they won’t vote for Obama. [subtext: you wouldn’t want to be one of those, would you?]”
Dr. Thomas Sowell is 10 shades darker than Borat Hussein and I would vote for him in a heartbeat. Rendell is a racist POS.
Yeah, I wouldn’t have any problem voting for a black person or a woman - but not THAT black person and not THAT woman.
I’d wholeheartedly campaign for and vote for Condi.
Sorry, that would have made the title too long (>100 characters) for the FR posting format...so here it is in graphic form instead.
Ha. Ya beat me to it!
Boolshat! I’m a genetically mixed up junkyard dog, don’t play the damned race card with me! I don’t care where your folks came from, it is no excuse to be a Dumbass!
Last damned thing any of my ancestors want from me is to let myself end up a sniveling little crybaby.
I’d vote for a woman, but Margaret Thatcher isn’t a US citizen.
We could use her about now
I haven’t seen so much racism in my life until now when the Democrats are baiting each other so much.
Not a black socialist liberal, no thanks.
“I’m gonna ask you one more time... where’s my Gumbo”!
Don’t they wish!!!
They can’t figure it out with out bringing race or gender into the conversation.
Give me a Margaret Thatcher and in a heartbeat she would have my vote!!!
Give me an “African-American candidate” whose philosophy agrees with mine, and I can agree with theirs - and by the way - whether male, female, black or white or Asian or Spanish or ? - I would vote for that person.
Do you get my picture .... it is what is in their minds and heart that I judge.
And the # 1 issue, with me, for me, is our National Security, which now includes who comes in and out of our borders. (and who takes flying lessons)
And in todays case neither hillary clinton or Barack Hussein Obama will ever meet my requirements.
Yeah, about that picture, it says things to a Southerner that the Yankees will never see.
Jimmy should come out of the closet, he ain’t fooling us!
Don't blame white conservatives! They have nothing to do with this. Blame Hispanic and Asian Democrats. It irks me how Democrats always try to toss their dirty diapers over their neighbor's fence.
I would love to vote for a black American presidential candidate, or a female black American presidential candidate. Bring on someone worth voting for.
If a purple martian supported life, tax cuts and defending the borders, I'd vote for he/she or it.
Oh, great. Now I’m sterile. ;)
Amen to that.
For Hillary, you could also add in 'black' Democrats.
And all generalizations, of course.
Which is why I believe the GOP machine is pushing McCain.
McCain is liberal enough to garner a bunch of crossover votes from Dems that aren't comfortable voting for a black guy.
I live in PA and I had no problem voting for an African-American (Lynn Swann). What I could NEVER do is vote for a Dem!
Well, Rendell is right. A lot of whites are afraid to vote for a black man, that’s why they’re voting for Hillary. And Hillary is out there urging a lot of white people and hispanics not to vote for Obama. Good observation Rendell! Moron.
Geez Ed, there’s plenty of black leaders in business, in the community, and in the Democrat party that aren’t ready to support, nor vote for an African-American Presidential candidate. Explain that please won’t you Mr. Rendell.
I am sure there are just as many black people who will vote for Obama just because his skin is dark; equally brain dead.
People, we need to vote for individuals who believe like we do and stand for what we do; not for any other reason!
As they say; “A picture is worth a thousand words”!
” would happily vote for a black man for president if that man was Thomas Sowell.”
Aw, that's cute.
According to the NAACP, Cankles is blacker than Obama...
“She” married to the “first black president” who’s slept with more black women than Obama.
Oh, what’s a racist to do in this situation?
And yet Rendell, a Liberal white male, won't vote for Obama either. What a hypocrite. He points the finger at the other guy, while accusing them of doing what he's doing.
Furthermore, Rendell has a BIG mouth.
Most conservative white males AND females alike, would vote for a black male or female holding the same conservative philosophy, which Obama doesn't. If they don't vote for Obama it will be because of his Liberal philosophy.
