Shattered Dreams of Al Qaeda ... (Clintons not the only ones having a 'rough' patch)

The U.S. military has captured al Qaeda documents that reveal al Qaeda in Iraq is crumbling. In this special edition of Frontpage Symposium, we have assembled a distinguished panel to discuss the significance of this discovery. Our guests today are:

Bill Roggio, the editor of The Long War Journal who has embedded in Iraq and Afghanistan, and is the president of Public Multimedia Inc., a non-profit seeking to improve coverage and understanding of the Long War.

Roggio: The documents were seized during a series of raids against al Qaeda in Iraq safehouses in Salahadin province. US, Iraqi and Coalition special forces conduct raids against al Qaeda in Iraq's command networks on a daily basis.

During a raid in October in the city of Samarra, a document was captured which outlines al Qaeda's poor tactical and strategic disposition throughout Iraq, but particularly in Anbar province. The document was thought to have been written by a senior al Qaeda leader. US forces also captured a diary of a regional al Qaeda in Iraq commander in the Balad area in early November.

Both of these documents provide valuable insight on how al Qaeda has been effected by the "surge" of US forces. The Balad commander said his force of 600 fighters was attritted down to about 20 fighters. The Anbar document stated al Qaeda suicide bomber volunteers often cannot carry out attacks and have been demoralized due to the tactical situation. Both commanders lament the rise of the "Awakening" forces and the Concerned Local Citizens (which are now being called "Sons of Iraq"), two organizations which have given insurgent groups and tribal forces the means to fight al Qaeda.

I went to a lecture at my university given by Tahir al-Bakaa, the former Iraqi Minister for Higher Education. He spoke in Arabic, but had a translator for us. Someone asked him if the situation in Iraq was really as good as we'd been hearing about. The first word out of his mouth was na'aym.

Na'aym means yes.

He also said this: "Thinking of withdrawal is thinking of defeat. It should be done step by step." This guy knows what he's talking about and has first-hand, unbiased knowledge, unlike the MSM and Congress where we're supposedly in a quagmire.

He also called Saddam Hussein a tyrant. He spoke with him on many occasions and didn't think much of him. He was selected to be the education minister and forced to leave his old job as a professor at Mustansiriya University and join the Ba'ath party. It was an excellent lecture on the REAL situation in Iraq, not want the MSM wants you to hear.

Amazing. “Al Qaeda in Iraq” has some foreign thugs in it. But its basically made up of “Iraqi” Sunnis.

We’ve been bribing the Sunnis over the past six months, and they’ve been using that money to stock up on weapons in their war with the Shiite government we created. And so they have hung low for a while.

But that won’t last.

Meanwhile, the real 9/11 murderers sit in northern Pakistan laughing at us.

After all these elections it's the government Iraqis created, not the one we created.

When my nephew was over there last year the guys they killed were mostly from other countries, particularly the snipers.

Now the terrorists have to resort to using retarded people as weapons, which suggests that Al Qaeda in Iraq's recruiters have been having a really time the past couple of years finding zealots.

My nephew's due back there this spring where he hopes to work with the Sunnis as before, helping them take out the foreign trash. But they were doing pretty well when he was there last so there might not be so much left to do.
