WASHINGTON (AFP) — Chinese leader Mao Zedong proposed sending 10 million Chinese women to the United States, in talks with top envoy Henry Kissinger in 1973, according to documents released Tuesday.
The powerful chairman of the Chinese Communist Party said he believed such emigration could kickstart bilateral trade but could also "harm" the United States with a population explosion similar to China, according to documents released Tuesday by the State Department on US-China ties between 1973 to 1976.
In a long conversation that stretched way past midnight at Mao's residence on February 17, 1973, the cigar-chomping Chinese leader referred to the dismal trade between the two countries, saying China was a "very poor country" and "what we have in excess is women."
He first suggested sending "thousands" of women but as an afterthought proposed "10 million," drawing laughter at the meeting, also attended by Chinese premier Zhou Enlai.
Kissinger, who was President Richard Nixon's national security advisor at that time, told Mao that the United States had no "quotas" or "tariffs" for Chinese women, drawing more laughter.
Kissinger then tried to highlight to Mao the threat posed by the Soviet Union and other global concerns as he moved to lay the groundwork for restoring diplomatic ties a year after Nixon's historic visit to China.
But Mao dragged the talks back to the topic of Chinese women.
"Let them go to your place. They will create disasters. That way you can lessen our burdens," Mao said.
"Do you want our Chinese women? We can give you ten million," he said.
Kissinger noted that Mao was "improving his offer."
Mao continued, "By doing so we can let them flood your country with disaster and therefore impair your interests. In our country we have too many women, and they have a way of doing things.
"They give birth to children and our children are too many."
A shrewd diplomat, Kissinger seemed to turn the tables on Mao, replying, "It is such a novel proposition, we will have to study it."
The two leaders then spoke briefly about the threat posed by the Soviet Union, with Mao saying he hoped Moscow would attack China and be defeated.
But Mao again lamented, "We have so many women in our country that don't know how to fight.
The assistant Chinese foreign minister, Wang Haijung, who was at the meeting, then cautioned Mao that if the minutes of the conversation were made public, "it would incur the public wrath."
Kissinger agreed with Mao that the minutes be scrapped.
But when Kissinger joked that he would raise the issue at his next press conference, Mao said, "I'm not afraid of anything.
"Anyway, God has sent me an invitation," said the Chinese leader, who coughed badly during the talks.
Mao died in September 1976. US-China diplomatic relations were restored in 1979.
Turn out we got them for free.

I don’t think Mao was kidding. He would have rounded them up, put them on ships and grounded them on the west coast.
I know that the Chinese Emporers used to demand women from Korea as tribute . . . and get them. They held sort of national beauty contests, the girls were inspected and then shipped off to China with the emporer able to dole them out.

But seriously folks.....the unfortunate (if your Chinese) reality, or hypocrisy, as it were, of US immigration policy, is that its ok to WALK into the US but, if you sail over on a ship....Oh NOOOOO we can’t have people sailing over here on ships.... that’s UNACCEPTABLE.
The 10 million Chinese Women would have at least given us a higher IQ injection into the gene pool vs. the current 20 million “visitors” we have. Where i live the Valedictorian at the High School is ALWAYS Chinese or Indian. The former mexican “students” do start alot of landscaping businesses and taqueria joints, however. kind of impressive, in a forlorn sort of way.
I remember Kissenger bugging Mao about political prisoners and how they should be free to emigrate.
Mao said “Sure. How many millions do you want?”
That shut Kissenger up in a hurry.
It's not difficult to tell women from trannies, most of the time. The biceps and adam's apple are dead giveaways. But when I went to Bangkok, it was much more difficult. Thais, male and female, tend to be relatively small folks with relatively delicate features, and the ladyboys are really, really convincing.
For the record, I didn't visit those places. I just observed from a sidewalk or a passing cab. My friend, who has lived in Thailand for years, was better at spotting the ladyboys than I.

Have you considered hosting a Japanese exchange student? We did, and it was one of the most wonderful experiences of our lives. She was very loving, and soon we both became very attached to "Our Yuki" . We still keep in regular contact with her today. In fact, I just sent her Valentine's Day card!
We would love to adopt a Japanese child (seeing as we both have some small ability with the language), but it's damned near impossible to do. しがたがないね。
I imagine it would be exceedingly easy to adopt a Chinese girl, since they are unwanted in their own country.

The Mexican “immigrants” here today are economic refugees, “forcibly deported” by the abject failure of the Mexican Government, to provide them with gainful labor.
How long has Mexico been a sovereign nation? 150, 200 years? And in that amount of time a country with some of the riches natural resources in the Western Hemisphere, can’t get its act together any better than this?
They are NOT “self-selected immigrants”. They are running from unemployment and poverty served upon them by their beloved country of Mexico. They march in street rallies here in the US demanding amnesty, waving the Mexican flag and proclaiming their love of Mexico, a nation that gave most of them NOTHING. Not even a decent education. They don’t really like the US, they resent us as “Gringos”, they blame the US for all their troubles and all they really care about is a paycheck that they would gladly take in Mexico if it was to be had there. They need to wake up and smell the salsa, and realize that Jose Calderon and the rest of the elites that run Mexico don’t give a dead rats ass about them except for the money they send back to Mexico. These illegals are people that elites in Mexico would spit at,(if they were still there), except for the few meager pesos that they would spend to keep the said elites businesses running.
A “self-selected” immigrant is one that goes to a new country knowing full well that he may never or probably will never see his homeland ever again. Like Cuban immigrants.
