Transgender residents of Broward County are now protected from discrimination in the workplace and housing, as well as in public venues from restaurants to hospitals.
County commissioners on Tuesday expanded their human rights ordinance to encompass gender identity, 13 years after agreeing to protect gays and lesbians. Unlike in 1995, there were no threats that government would incur the wrath of voters or God.
Broward becomes the largest Florida community to outlaw transgender discrimination, and one of the largest in the nation.

Elsewhere in the article, it says some of the GLBT community didn't want to put this law on the books, for fear there would be a drive to strike the law via a petition drive
and vote from the public.
But the commission decided to do it quietly, under wraps, and one of the original writers of the law figured it was too late for conservatives to get the petitions out and signed by this fall.
So in other words, they are sneaking it in without much debate. Eat it, conservative community. You're lucky they let you live here.

NO, but you’d better not be a church or non-profit organization and reject a transgender applicant. Or else you’ll face a HUGE lawsuit.

Don’t forget FL has a marriage amendment on the ballot.
There is infrastructure from that to now in place to mobilise if not for 2008 then for 2010 to take it away from the idiotic counties and leave it with the state.
FL has a HUGE problem with local municipalities abusing the home rule statute. Note how they duplicated a federal law.
Perhaps what they should do is eliminate all the local cities and just have one county/city government and thus only 67 municipal entities.
