McCOOK - A gas line rupture west of the city sent flames shooting across the highway and plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky today, damaging a major access road for oil and gas companies.

A stretch of Farm-to-Market Road 490 between FM 611 and FM 755 remains closed as officials let the gas burn out of the pipeline and assess the damage to the road, which is expected to remain closed at least through the day, Edinburg Fire Chief Shawn Snider said.

One person, working at an adjacent station suffered minor injuries in the explosion. He initially left the scene, but officials were bringing him back to the scene for medical evaluation early Friday afternoon.
